:-) okay...you win and I'll check. Generally the drivers are in late Sept/early Oct and I'm not sure about the age restrictions. They do short drives - only a day (pre-sunrise to post sunset).
40,000 acres of public land that should have been left for wild animals such as the wild horses that live on the pryor mountain wild horse refuge right outside of lovell. Those extra acres would be a real blessing to those horses
Yes sir, you can find some pretty country out there. Some of the friendliest folks I meet on a road trip last August are there, outside of Nebraska.
Ranching is a hard life anywhere, but it's a pretty honest way to make a living too, and you'll always know pretty much what your day will be like when you go to bed at night.
Some of the folks on the drive were NOT cowboys...but most belong to one of the oldest families in that region who were born riding...by the way this is real riding, not show or race track riding.
@thinknews love how people critisize others on these videos. that fool probably knew more about horses at the age of 5 than buffguy will ever know. I like the way you put it though couldn't have said it better myself.
this is real riding not show or race track riding.
Yes this is thinknews...but I appear nowhere in this video...I'm the one walking carrying the camera. None of these cowfolks used whips...they use horses, dogs, and sound (yelling) to herd the cattle. I can email my sister, whose family is shown about your question.
I wish I could do both also...I am trying to set up a visit during the next cattle drive, so if I ride, it should be a spectacle. But while it looks like fun, it is hard work. You can't stop when you're tired.
Big beautiful Wyoming. And it is. Lived there for seven years. Douglas, Wyoming---So many wonderful people. Of course the winters were very cold, but it was worth it.
YOu know the sad thing is ive been worken cattle horseback all my life and it looked to me like the dog and the older feller was the only one that had a clue what was goin on hahaha
Thanks for the reply. Aussie cattle dogs are on my short list.
Do you know how they are with animals that need a 'gentler' touch than cattle, like sheep or even fowl? (I got a job on a sheep and cattle ranch this summer - been thinking about getting a dog this summer.)
I'm also a little concerned about the sheer amount of exercise they need. I've been reading they need two hours a day of strenuous exercise (more than just walking). But I would guess a lot of herding dogs are in that category.
Nichins, Aussie Cattle dogs and Texas Heelers (same thing actually) will get plenty of exercise chasing the Sheep, Cows, kids and whatever else you set them to.
The Aussie was born to herd/heel
Sheep is what they were prinarily used for in Australlia, and even the UK.
You don't find the answer to your problems by running away from them. The East Coast is vibrant and the many cultures are what make it exciting. You may find yourself bored with the endless flat lands and lack of neighbors. Learn to live within yourself to find happiness.
Sorry about the comments that might have offended...somehow notification was not made to me and I wasn't aware they were posted. Or at least I hope you were referring to the two battling idiots who left comments.
I for one live in the country...albeit a bit too close to town for my comfort.
Wow, this brings back some nostalgia. I lived on a ranch just outside of Fort Laramie for a year of my life. It's an experience I wouldn't give back for the world.
School was odd, as I was a big city kid placed in a small town. 365 people, 359 good people and 6 sore heads was the sign into the town. I came from Milwaukee, so you can guess the culture shock that ensued.
Why would you call me a liar? It's absolutely true.
If you're from that area, I can tell you the "Millers" were on the end of my bus route, which was just down a gravel road that went out pretty much at 180 degrees from the historic Fort Laramie and ran along the "canal" which we would catch craw dads in.
Also, I have a few old slugs from the OLD rifles that shot on the ranch property I lived on. Why I would lie about something like this is extremely odd.
Great video! I'm a 1st grade teacher in Florida and we're studying cowboys, and our "Book of the month" is about a cattledrive. I'll start my teaching with this video and then we'll read the book. NONE of my kids have any idea of a real drive. This will be tremendously helpful to build background, since we can't go on a drive! (I went on an all-day drive about 12 years ago and loved it.)
Beautiful! I love living in a state where you can still see cattle drives. I love living here, it is a wonderful state with very generous and hard-working people. So glad I moved here.
I grew up around Casper and have great memories of going to brandings and riding our horses. Great video and I like to see the kids out there like I was learning from life not books or TV.

That is an Australian Blue Heeler, also known as the Australian Cattle Dog.
Best herding dogs ever. You won't find another that has half as good herding instinct.

Life in Wyoming must be very dreary. If I lived there I think I had to kill myself.

you must think that because you are atheist. it must cloud your judgement.
you probably live in some dreary gray city in the east.

It is always interesting to see Americans' reactions to my nickname. That shows how well I chose my user name. :)

Dogs on the highway is a good way to get squashed dogs. You can't rely on the gunsels to have any sense, so you ought to keep the dogs in the truck when you get to the road.
SAP06 4 years ago
These are working dogs who stay with the herd. The cowboys keep a close eye on them - the dogs are their partners. Cattle dogs in trucks are useless.
