@lakishajenkins No, it's a lads' dance called "ritka és sűrű" or "rare and dense" meaning slow and fast rhythm. It was collected by Zoltán Kallós in 1969 in Ördöngösfüzes in the Transylvanian region called Mezőség near the city of Cluj. @abcdef8419 "If I was free myself" is the translation of the archaic "Ha magammal szabad lennek" which translates word by word "If I was free with myself" meaning "If I was a free person" . I tried to give back a more archaic sound in the translation, obviously not a complete success & I welcome SPECIFIC criticisms, not over arching indictments because I can't do anything about my translation being "bad" in general. Thanks, and again, I think the song makes sense: it's about being a prisoner.

@szatmar666 But being a prisoner in a metaphoric sense, not actually sitting in a prison. Being free with myself is different from being a free person. The song is expressing how emprisoned a human can feel by simply being a human and having human consciousness. This is the point, you cannot free yourself from your consciousness... so it would be sooooooo nice, if you could write "if I was free from myself" instead of "being free myself". There IS a huge difference.

Everybody has their own interpretation, a prisoner will interpret the song as song by someone sitting in prison, a person who is trapped in the family structure will interpret it as sung by someone who cannot escape his family, a person trapped in his own consciousness will interpret is as I wrote before.

Oh I'm very aware of that.You totally misunderstood me lol.

What I meant, is english and it's welsh origin is so different from Hungarian,that the two language has no commons whatsoever. Hungarian is originate from the northern part of Afro-Asia. Part of the ancient Babylonian language family. The way I recall it's originate from the southern part of Sumeria, about 3500-3800 bc.

So I know the difficulties of the translation. Actually the person did a very good job of it. And yes..

@alteans That's an interesting theory although I am a little weary of language theories going back 3-4000 years. I doubt average hungarians would understand a word Arpad's generation spoke and even medieval hungarian is a tough to crack today. Going back that far in my opinion is pushing our 19th century romantic ideas of nationhood too far into times when nations and cultures did not exist the way they do since modern times. I am fascinated with DNA sequencing and that will reveal a lot.

@szatmar666 Well.. Some historians made the discovery.I think it was around the late 19th century while they were exploring the area. As a matter of fact if you look at the old Hungarian tablet writings looks exactly like the Sumerian ones .

I mean, almost letter by letter. I don't think ,that's an accident. I myself a lover of languages. Learned many words in many languages. Well, I'm not saying ,that I really perfected any of them, but it is a life time work in progress. :)

No, this song is not Szekely, it's from the Mezoseg region of (central)Transylvania, southeast from Dezs (Dej) and east from Kolozsvar (Cluj) between the Maros (Mures) and Szamos (Somes) river valleys.

I first heard this as a small clip on encarta (the computer encyclopedia) back in 1998 located in their article about music..and even though it was a small clip, the melody and eastern rhythms really griped me and I used to play the little clip over and over again and I could never find this song in this version untill now, cant find it on I tunes but it is really emotional and powerful.
