i have an Ibiza GTI 2.0 8v, roughly around 100kg lighter than the mk3 Golf GTI.. but my 8v is being modified at the moment, belive me the 16v is a superb engine.. but 8v picks up that little bit quicker and loses it to a 16v once its rolling.. once ive got around the same BHP as a 16v there isnt a dought that the 16v wont keep up with it. Both good in the day tho!
@BlacksheepV8drift Were did you get this info and in what country are you in?the reason I'm askin what country youre in is cus I know in different country they have differne HP. Here in Switzerland the 8v has 107 or 112 and the 16v 129..... Fromwhat I heard from a friend who is a mechanic and has rebuilt 3 golfs entirely he said the first gti 8v is better, also the first year of the nk2 gti with the mk1 engine is better than the 16v, I forgot for what reason, but if u want I can ask him:) IDK
@smokinblu I'm pretty sure it's the bottom end on the 8v is what's so good cause you can then put a 16v head on it, which makes more horsepower then if you would have started out with a 16v, cause of the bump in compression which will make more horsepower, But I have heard of guys making those 8v motors like 14 fo1 for the compression level so I guess it's the bottom end that's what all the vw guys like about them!
hola a todos llo tengo los dos modelos el 8v y el 16v y sin duda el 16v anda mas , pero como motor fiable y ke no de ni un solo problema el 8v, ademas tambien digo ke tengo el 8v con algunos retokes como repro de centralita, colectores , supresor, tubarro kit de admision en carbono y un 16v de origen no se le va nada de nada en punta y aceleracion, un saludo a todos .

@dtwolf LoL..... The guy in the 8v is a SLEEP, you can see him leave about 1/2 a sec after the 16v.... its not the engine its THE DRIVER!!!

@smokinblu Here in Spain, mk2 8v had 112hp the 16v had 140hp both 1'8liters
mk3 8v had 115hp the 16v had 150hp both 2liters
I got one mk2 8valves.
