  • The VMU integration is genius.

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA Yes, it can run games directly from an SD card without a GD-ROM drive, you can flash Dreamshell as a BIOS.

  • How about joining my forum please and posting "how to" guide on this, could be interesting!

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA Well, I've never flashed Dreamshell as a BIOS, because you need to solder an EEPROM on top of the DC's BIOS chip. And I can't find the EEPROM (It needs to the same used on the DC for bios, but with nothing on it). But to flash Dreamshell, you need to do an other mod (Very Easy, I did it) to be able to flash it. And then you can flash Japanese,European and American BIOS and make it run in NTSC or PAL (you dont need the other eeprom for this) I might join your forum :)

  • I think your greater success was getting the hefty Dreamcast to last longer on less batteries than the SEGA Gamegear...

  • lol

  • Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the go?...... dear lord..

  • is there a way to make a ps1 pertable that can read games off a harddrive? that would be awesome

  • Well done :)

  • how does this guy make this stuff!!!!!????? i mean i would pay any amount of money for a portable N64, or Dreamcast!

  • Well, you can commission me to make a new style N64 portable; and if you want a PAL DreamCast, mine is for sale if you want it.

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA AW MAN. If i didn't just get in a tight spot with money, i'd totally take this.

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA how much for an n64 portable?

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA

How much does it Cost tp commission your for a GCp ?

  • Hey would u sale a n64 handheld? I'm interested

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA amazing. :) How long did it take you to build this?

  • I don't remember but was probably a couple of months.

  • JET SET RADIOOO!

  • I've just noticed the back of the console is parts from a PSone (i.e. the disc cover)

  • Yes, indeed TG! Used it as a ready-made mechanism.

  • i want buy one responda me no meu canal

  • LUNCH BOX!

  • Yes, shows what you can do with one with time and inclination!

  • nice leds in the joystick!

  • Thought it was a nice touch!

  • Question: In some of the Dreamcast games, you need to solo the mini dongle (play with it separated from the dreamcast unit in order to unlock certain things. Since the dongle is incorporated into the unit, can you power it up separately?

  • The VMU unit is wired into this system, so no, also the connections from the VMU are not connected.

  • Love this mate

my inspiration behind my upcoming Dreamcast portable!

  • or you can give me like a mini instrucction book to build the awsome portable man ur the best

  • There are a few videos made in my Channel on the work in progress for this project. If you want more details, please join my forum! ;o)

  • hey can you sell me one for 200 i live in puerto rico

  • Why do some people consider an offer like this to be even vaguely of interest? The parts alone cost more than that by a fair bit, let alone labour; if you want someone to sell something they make, then you need to be prepared to pay a sensible price, ie parts, labour and postage - what do you think about 100 hours of labour is worth? Add that to the cost of the parts and you're getting closer to a sensible price! lol

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA

then what would you say a 1000?

come to think of it you're right, you should find someone willing to buy it and make like millions of these,or idk talk to sega, maybe they'll buy it and make it in large scale but i would love to have one of these beauties.

keep it to yourself or send it to sega,if you're happy with it keep it or if you want some money talk to sega i'm pretty sure they'll like it

in any case you just got a fan

now if you excuse me i'll buy a dreamcast

  • To be honest, i'd not want to sell a portable made with a CD system full stop, the reason is the CD drives in the likes of the Saturn, DreamCast, and a variety of other systems are not reliable over time. DreamCast's are quite bad, frankly, i'd not suggest buying a portable DreamCast full stop - I wouldn't therefore feel happy selling it to someone for the same reason. I'd happily sell a portable cart based system though, they are generally built to last.

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA How bout 250 dollars...?

  • @OMGYAYman777 ok but i live in puerto rico can u send in ok im gonna whait man your the best

  • Hey bacteria ive been a fan of urs for a couple years now and i was wondering can u sell me a do it yourself kit for the n64

  • Making a portable has many different factors depending on what you want to achieve. How about registering and posting on my forum, and if you need parts, I or someone else might be able to sell to you.

  • Hey, bacteria. What's the power draw of a dreamcast run off of 7.2v batteries rather than a pico psu. I have searched but can't find any good results.

  • I don't recall exactly but I think the whole portable was drawing something like 2.6 amps including screen. You don't need a PicoPSU at all, you can run the portable off 7.4v, 5v and 3.3v fine; also, runs with less amperage and heat this way.

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA ok, thanks I knew you could run them off of 7.4, but I just needed to know how much the draw was to know how many mah I would want for the batteries I'm getting. I would have posted this on your site, but I forgot my log in info. I'll have to remember that

  • If you've forgotten your email address I can PM it to you so you can log in to change your password if you like; shoot me a PM.

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA when you say it includes the screen is that with or without the led mod. My computer teacher gave me a fairly newish laptop battery I think I'll use. It's 14.8v and 6450 mah. I'll slplit it to make two 7.4v batteries and have double the amperage.

  • What are you planning to do when the VMU runs out of batteries??

  • Open case, change battery cell.

  • @diego25497 The VMU doesn't run out of batteries unless the whole system does. The VMU draws energy from the battery for the console itself. The only instance where the VMU would need batteries would be when it's held separately. Likewise it has no interraction with the game you play on the console.

  • @Scourgeandmephiles93 Well, that may be true but the fact that it doesn't have any interaction with the game is a lie because it can tell you the name of the game and saves the data which is very important and in fact that is counted as an interaction becsuse it would be totally different to not have one and that means it interacts with the game itself

  • @diego25497 Exactly, that is why the VMU runs off of the batteries the console uses to function itself. We can all see the VMU interracting with the game in this video, which means it is connected to the portable Dreamcast's power supply and does not run off of its own battery source. When you charge the console you charge the VMU as well in this case.

  • @Scourgeandmephiles93 yes exactly but the thing that you can't deny is that we both want a portable dreamcast

  • @diego25497 True, even though I recently bought a home console version. =D

  • @Scourgeandmephiles93 Whaat!!?? where did you found a dreamcast!!?? I want one (I know it's impossible to get a new one) BUT EVEN A USED ONE WOULD BE NICE!!! DC is awesome :D

  • @diego25497 HAH! I got myself a PAL Dreamcast with the blue spiral, along with two controllers (VMU each), and four games. The console is also chipped to play games from any region. One of the cheapest offers I could find. Not too shabby price either. All this through eBay. =D

  • That should fit in my pocket just fine...

  • Lol. Nope, not possible to make a pocket sized DreamCast portable using original hardware, far too thick drive mechanism for a start!

  • I think this is the best portable one I've seen.

  • Reminds me of a device used in 2001 space odyssey.. Great work MBB

  • n64 joy stick is superior? That thing dies with time, its crazy, I can't play any of my N64 games because of that stupid joystick, never had that problem with a dreamcast.

  • I've got a few of these large joysticks, all old, all work fine. They are built very well and feel good.

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA then can you tell me why almost every nintendo 64 owner that played their N64's all the time till their teenage age, had their joy stick failing? Getting a huge dead spot? So you're walking through all your games, I can't beat bowser with it. I opened mine and it seems to be that the little plastic things that record the movement get scratched by the joystick as you move it, and years and years of using it will wear out and have a circular middle, its not as good as you think.

  • Played N64 more than DreamCast maybe?

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA Of course, I never owned a dreamcast, tho my friends had one and I was playing sonic with them and saul calibur 2, It was a fine joystick, and my N64 started getting a dead spot about 5 later when I got it, and then 10 years later it was completely dead. You are not getting N64 joysticks that were used a lot.

  • @randomenvelope its a mako pad joystick so its actually really awesome to use.

  • @TheBlueBandits still wears out much more easily then the joysticks out there today.

  • @randomenvelope actually it doesnt. it uses the exact and i mean EXACT same technology as joysticks today.

  • @TheBlueBandits bullshit, have you opened a n64 analog stick and a ps2 analog stick? They have both totally different mechanism, n64 uses wheels to a circuit board to track motion, ps2 uses suspension and no springs like the n64 which has one giant spring so it will flip back to place, which ps2 controllers do not use, so if you think you know it so well, then you are WRONG! analog sticks are way more superior and I've played ps2 more then n64 and the analog sticks are perfectly fine still.

  • what are you gonna do about the memory card? It will make a annoying battery low noise.

  • Haven't heard it (yet!)

  • @randomenvelope No such thing. The VMU will beep on startup but that is the only noise it will make, even if the battery is dead/dying.

  • @NateN34 its still annoying.

  • Why did u incorporate the VMU in the system would it have been easier just to put a door on top of the case to remove it?

  • Easier but not as effective. This way, the VMU graphics show, eg the "Quake 3" logo - looks nice.

  • Yeah N64 joysticks are far superior, I really loathe the Dreamcast controller. I love how chunky it looks, great system mate.

  • @atombat If It were me, I'd prefer the gamecube's joystick. Because of the rubber coating.

  • nice

  • Nice system!

Dude, when they shoot at you, strafe to one side. Don't just stand there and take it!

  • dude you should be working with nintendo or sony o.O !!

  • FINALLY! A Disc based portable with a cover on it's disc drive! Those ones with out one drive me crazy! Thanx Bacteria.

  • I prefer them internal rather than sticking out spinning freely!

  • @MODDEDbyBACTERIA Cool. I like that too.

  • That's just incredbile. Amazing job. For the first time i thought it's too thick, but when I saw 'developing video' I see that it's as small as possible. Just epic :)

  • Indeed, it is tight inside regards space. System holds nicely in hands.

  • hello may i just ask you something?? just wondering dose the ps1 screenn power of more batteries or dose it connect to the motherboard.

Something else aswell can you play when charging, and how do you connect the batteries to the charger aswell as the mother bored.

I can under stand that connect the batteries to to the 12v and ground prongs on the bored how dose that aslo connect the the charger jack?

  • 7.4v cells power the screen and the PSone, there is no 12v! No, don't charge while playing or you will damage the batteries. Connect charger jack as per terminals to batteries.

  • Thanks for the replay

  • if you dont mind may i ask something else please

what sort of battery did you use the dreamcast and how did you connect them to the pins bored

  • No, this was a one-off. Took a colossal amount of time to build it.

I am building an N64 portable, for the purpose of selling for charity though...

  • dude, you should sell that system. how much?

  • Wouldn't been easier to hold if you switch the little screen with the buttons?

  • No, would be awkward then to use. Easy to hold as it is! Buttons, etc, are in best positions as they are.

  • No, no plan to make even a second one!

  • you should add a light to the UMD area. just a dim light, but enough to be able to see it during all hours of the day.

  • This is seriously awesome.

  • das beste wäre heute oder überhaupt wenn ich jemand netten zum chattn finden würde!

  • Thanks for the answers. It's really admirable to do this much with a hobby :)

  • I've seen all your (amazing) videos, but i have to ask... what is your motivation for these projects? Are you trying to get noticed for a console engineering job or is it just a passionate hobby of yours?

Also, are you self taught or did you have some schooling? And what is the best kind of paint to use to re-color a system? Amazing work!!!

  • Passionate hobby.

Self taught, researching on the net on forums, wiki's, fan sites, etc.

    Paint - spray paint. I use Plasti-Kote.

  • AWESOME!

  • Do u have a fan in there?

  • 5 fans, as per the build video and documentation.

  • GREAT!!!!Just great work...!!!

  • This is brilliant. Outstanding work.

  • FUCKING AMAZING! wow! you really outdone yourself. Bravo bravo!

  • Absolutely amazing, you've pretty much outdone sony and nintendo.

  • agree with F3rgul!!! damn!

  • Man this is so awesome...the thought of playing games like Shenmue on the go

  • Add a slot loading drive and clean up the button layout a bit and this could sell big! Well, pending litigation. But still!

  • Slot loading drive would have added to the thickness, button layout - designed to fit my hands perfectly, and does!

  • Wow, that's completely amazing. I'm stunned. Well done, and it looks like it works perfectly! Keep up the good work and hopefully the publicity and good responses will encourage you to commence another gaming related project!

  • This is probably the best portable mod i've seen.

Do you move forward by pressing the "a" button?

  • Thank you! In Quake 3, yes, press the green for forward, red, backwards etc. You can change what the buttons do via the game settings mode in Quake 3 if you prefer. In Unreal Tournament however, the joystick moves the player, the four buttons are for looking up or down, etc.

  • hi .could you answer me please im intersted in electronic mod please tell me what is the best beginner guide?

    do you have website?

  • I certainly do have a website - see my YouTube link - moddedbybacteria (dot) wordpress (dot) com - have a look!

  • thank you + subscribe + 5* :) but

  • please i feel bothered you could you tell me where can i find a good way to learn electronic mod and create please waiting your answer :(

  • Sent you a PM! ;o)

  • That looks very nice, (even though I would have preferred a white paint coat)

But I have one question: If the VMU is unremovable and you left out the VMU buttons, what's the point of it?

  • The point is to show the game image on the small screen; like the scrolling "Quake" in that game, etc. Just a nice feature!

  • Yeah. i've never played DC before so I thought the VMU was just like a memory card and a portable gaming mini thing. But I guess I was wrong.

I made that comment at the beginning of the video (before I saw it in action) and I agree, it does look really nice.

  • make a portable Gamecube next, but it would be super expensive and hard. Also whats the screen thingy above the main buttons? I don't get the concept

  • That's the Virtual Memory Unit (VMU). It's the DreamCast's version of the memory card. It has it's own set of buttons as well as an LCD screen. Some games use that screen in addition to the main one that you are playing on for displaying stats, items, etc. Some games even allowed you to download minigames to the VMU.

  • It wouldn't be harder to make a GameCube portable, would be about the same. I intend to make one in a few months time - other portables to make in the meantime!

  • Another great portable Bacteria!

    Looks amazing.

    -Vort

  • Finally! I was waiting for a video of it finished :D It looks great!

    -Blayke :D

  • No, didn't use a network adapter - Quake 3 on the DreamCast is very challenging as it is! ;o)

  • That's really awesome, does it have a network adapter, so you can play quake 3 online on it?

  • awesome man :D
