The LM victims include people like old grandfathers with cancer, union activists, and young students trying to escape poverty by getting an education. In other words, those representing the poorest and weakest in society are the ones being persecuted in the name of the monarchy. This will only incur more hatred and polarization in society. In the end, your desire to ‘enforce’ love for your King, will destroy the very thing you want to preserve.

I respect the family for what they've done, especially in terms of charity work. However, this lese majeste law is such a backward rule. I understand that when you THREATEN people, that's going overboard, but merely expressing your dissatisfaction with the royal family and getting put in prison for that? It's embarrassing in the eyes of the outside world. It creates the notion that Thai's (i myself) are paranoid, cant take criticism (even constructive), and will even put people in jail for that

@menzerna1234 They may have better conditions, but they still suffer from gang wars. A lot of new inmates are pressured to join group or they'll be targeted and mugged. The prisons differ in US, some are designed for dangerous people (high security, confined spaces, more strict) and others are more open for lesser criminals. Thailand however, seem to have prisons that are designed to house every type of criminal. Just because American prisons look like hotels doesnt mean the experience is safer

See, from the Democracy Index 2010, I can clearly see that your claim was in fact wrong as East Timor is ranked 42, but Thailand comes in as second as number 57, together with Colombia. Another interesting fact is that TH has moved down from rank 54 in 2008 and East Timor has moved up from 47 in 2008. So while others in SEA are improving (e.g. Vietnam which improved the most in ranking), Thailand is sliding in the wrong direction. Not good!

@Tycetto Pardon for the wrong info. I personally classified East Timor as somewhat closer to Oceania, since politically it's not ASEAN member. But my claim aside, East Timor is indeed SE Asian.

Anyway, it's indeed not good to slips down for some places, but still it proves that monarchy and democracy aren't incompatible. The highest up the ranks, tho I'm not claiming Thailand's democracy anywhere near them yet, are all constitutional monarchy countries.

Yes, I know that a monarchy and a democracy can be combined with success; I'm from Denmark, so I know. But Denmark ALSO shows that you don't need unfair laws like Lese Majeste laws to protect a monarchy - we do fine without.

We let our queen speak in the telly every New Year's Eve and she is known for being a very frank woman who calls a spade for a spade. Just as she can criticize the Danes; the Danes can criticize her back!

But I would not support such a sudden changes. Thailand and Denmark aren't same country, and that many aspects differ. What works there may not work here in the present, but it'll eventually be in the future.

To tell you the truth, Scandinavian countries have been something of an ideal society that I look up to, and hope Thailand can head towards the same way. Thanks for your insights tho!

Concerning Thai history; I am reading up on it and learning day by day. But I am NOT using sources from most Thai history books, as they are most very misleading and tools for brainwash of students unfortunately.

The LM law is used as a silencer in TH and that is my concern - That's black & white.

@Tycetto @Tycetto That part wasn't in the Thai history books either---I suppose most Thais don't even know it, which I got from US source. The Thai LM law was reinforced substantially during the Cold War since our close neighbors are turning commies and we sided with the US. Before that, it was relatively left unused.

I couldn't agree more on LM becoming the silencer nowadays, but again there're many dimensions to this law, some of which are cultural, social concerns rather than pure justice.

Thailand does not deserve credit on the account on how the country handles democracy. Remember that there has been 18(!) coups (and attempts) since 1932. That is not a good track record!

Also remember that most Thais like to tell that Thailand was the only country never to have been colonized in the region, so basically the country should have been much further in front of the rest here, if we look at it that way.

But it's not.

Denmark do NOT have Lese Majeste laws, but a law protection all Danes (included the royals of course!) against slander, libel and defamation. DieDieChakri, believe me Thailand allows more freedom for ethnic minoritys to follow there own religions and culture than many other countrys...so long as respect is shown to wishes of the majority , is this not how democracy works?and as for saying school brainwash children this is not true , they are only educating children to have respect and be useful in society

S'pore is a very young country at first was part of the British Empire now independant , its history is such that it could never have become a Kingdom .Thailand is blessed with a monarchy that we should admire not critisize
