@omagosVII what? Anyway, corporations are people, and are legally protected as such. A corporate tax is double taxation, since incomes are being taxed already. Considering the fact that most (>50%) Americans work for a business with more than 500 employees, corporate taxes likely takes directly from your pocket, if employed. A recent economic study from Hassett/Mathur computes, “A 1 percent increase in corporate tax rates is associated with nearly a 1 percent drop in wage rates.”
You think corporations are people? Cite that law please. It doesn't exist. Corporations are not people in any sense and have never been ruled such. They are simply vehicles for organizing capital and human resources toward building profits.
And you actually beleive that a 1% reduction in the primary cost driver of businesses results from a 1% increase in the loopholed rate applied to corporate profits. You either lack logic or an understanding of business finance.
@dtorfleming - 1819 Supreme Court case Dartmouth College vs. Woodward - upheld in 1886 Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad - corporations have the same rights as people and are protected equally by the Fourteenth Amendment. There should be no other way here; otherwise, the government could run over the rights of corporations by fiat, letting some businesses fall while supporting some arbitrarily, nationalizing them as they see fit. Oh wait, they already do that.
@habertree Incorrect. The 1886 Santa Clara case most certainly DID NOT say anything about corporations having the same rights as people, and DID NOT reference the 14th Amendment, except to declare it was irrelevant to the case.
@dtorfleming furthermore I'm finishing my MBA with a specialization in Finance, so check your judgments at the door before you snipe personally. I'm citing the AEI study called "Taxes and Wages" which dissects the linkage between capital taxation and wages; read it.
Check it out, I'll argue the Labor case for you: Who do you think gets hit hardest by a 35% tax on profits? Management? Shareholders? No, Laborers. To quote Milton Friedman, "I'm on your side, but you're not."

@Volren617 I take it you've never heard about the taxes NOT paid by corporations. I take it you've never heard America has some of the lowest corporate tax rates in the developed world. Why shouldn't taxes be fair? Idiot!
@habertree Two completely different types of organizations. It doesn't take a great deal of intelligence to see the difference between a union and a corporation.
@habertree A corporation is not a living human being, and therefore incapable of suffering. Workers for the corporation who made near minimum wage and had to live paycheck to paycheck suffer, though they have no say in how the corporation operates (their voices aren't represented by the corporation). The decision makers and upper management suffer very little if at all because they are not personally responsible for the corporation's liabilities, and give themselves massive paychecks.
@habertree Another group that suffered were the smaller businesses these corporations destroyed when they opened up. Corporations often get beneficial tax deals compared to small business owners in addition to already having far superior resources. This creates an extremely unbalanced and uncompetitive market.
How about just putting a tax incentive to the 'job creators' (sounds like a self pias narcisitic title) the companies that create domestic jobs get tax cuts and those who get greedy get the same back at them with taxes. Simple. No problems, only solutions.
@teslaminded1 Thank you! I always wondered why treat corporations that create jobs and those that outsource them the same?
We should consider a balanced budget too. I admire our Healthcare system that ultimately save lives on a need to bases rather than the "money first" policy (like China). Let's cooperate to make Healthcare more efficient; rather than not touching the topic at all, cut what is wasted. Also raising the retirement age wouldn't be a bad start either.
There is only one thing wrong with this Sam, you are using logic and facts and that is no way to reach right wingers... You need bigotry, hate, and nastiness for that. Pretend like you are their dad and you'll reach them. Treat them as rational equals and they put their fingers in their ears and say la la la la...
@zippyweinstein But even then the consumer has the power to decide to catch the bus, walk, use taxi, bicycle, or carpool in an effort to protest high gas prices. Low demand creates a surplus, and will cause gas companies to lower their prices.
How is it that Democrats are so horrible that guys like Romney can win elections? Mitch Daniels slashed funding for disabled children and the mentally ill, and he's beloved by many in my state. How is it that Democrats can be so gawdawful that they can't figure out how to attack these most obvious issues their opponents have? We'll see if this "Corproations are people!" crap is actually used against him effectively. I can almost guarantee it won't be.
It is amazing how naive "progressives" are. You think that corporations are run by greedy heartless non-people that have more money than they know what to do with. IF that is the case and you raise taxes on them they will simply place the extra costs onto the backs of the poor and middle class through higher prices, lower wages, shipping jobs and operations overseas. In their greed, they would find ways to EVADE paying your tax, thus leaving you with LESS tax revenue in the end.
They've already done that for the past three decades, even after several tax breaks, decreases, etc. And the disparity between the line workers (so to speak) and the CEOs. in terms of pay, is obscene. Sorry, they've been given break after break and they've still screwed the middle and lower classes. Even Warren Buffett acknowledges this.
@Morghost Not true. If corporations raise prices (because of taxes), they will see lower demand. Remember economics, higher price means lower demand. In this economy, a corporation will need to keep their prices low to sale their product if they want to compete.
@PoliticsILove That is part of the reason our jobs are being shipped overseas. We have about the highest corporate taxes in the world, so overseas corporations can produce goods and ship them to the USA for less than what it costs to produce those same goods here.
@Morghost Corporations here pay the second LOWEST taxes as a % of GDP. Jobs are being sent overseas because corporations have found that they get additional tax breaks, plus they don't have to adhere to environmental standards, safe work places, and a minimum wage. In other words, corporations like to go where there is "cheap labor". Our manufacturing sector has diminished. The way to fix this problem is to stop giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas.
This just illustrates how disconnected Romney is to real people. He seriously thinks that corporations are people, and this is why he advances an agenda that ultimately helps corporations, and not the average American.
Mitt like all rich people don't give a damn about the people.. people are just a means to an end ..the end being power and the tools to make themselves richer...people have learned nothing it seems.. a society bases on the amassing of wealth for the few can never be a just society.. it will always end in a disparity that will destroy the people for the sake of the few..it is an illusion created in the minds of the masses to think "i can get rich too"
It‘s interesting how liberals scream about how corporations spend so much money to get Republicans elected. Yet in the same breath, Dems praise labor unions as real people -- completely ignoring the “corporations” that employ them and the astronomical amounts corporate UNIONS spend to elect Democrats.
@xadam2dudex Rich people paying their "fair share" as our current president sees it, leaves less money to hire more workers. Corporations aren't a bunch of computers and buildings eating money. Guess what rich people do with their money? Sooner or later, THEY SPEND IT! And guess who benefits from their spending? THE PEOPLE WHO WORK AND MAKE GOOD PRODUCTS AND SERVICES!
@xadam2dudex I'm a small business owner. I tune and rebuild pianos for a living. I know what makes my business work and what makes it fail. My income isn't fixed. When I have more money, I spend more money, I might even have some to set aside for a rainy day. When I have less money or think I will have less soon, I spend less money. When I buy a product or service, I am rewarding the people who worked to provide it. So people pay me well when I do a good job for them.
@rpsvt1 u said it u r a SMALL business owner.. the multi-national corporations do not operate like u do..their business is driven by stock prices and financial manipulation..it has nothing to do with the product or the service..the corporations are sitting on a few trillion dollars in order to keep the jobless rate high because it serves their purpose..I am surprised when after everything that has happened people still turn a blind eye to reality and still live in the 19th century
@xadam2dudex Since when did business big or small ever benefit from their customers not being able to afford their products or services? Surely if they're customers are out of work this will occur. You've killed the golden goose.
Take Apple for example. They have a record amount of cash on hand. Why? because they used the cash they had available back when, and produced products that were amazing, and affordable. Why wouldn't they do it again?
@rpsvt1 u seem to have a most distorted idea about business and corporations.. do u own an Apple product ? if u do u know they are 1 over priced 2 they are proprietary in design u r trapped into buying ONLY Apple products...it's like buying a car and then having to buy gas only from the car company that makes the car...but it seems like so many other people u delude urself into worshiping at the altar of wealth and corporate power...good luck with that
Romey's response on Romneycare was relevant. It boils down to this: Which is better?
1) Force people to pay for their own healthcare?
or
2) Force everyone ELSE to pay for their healthcare?
Our current system does the latter, because if someone without insurance shows up at an emergency room, they WILL be treated. The cost of the treatment is either handled by government or absorbed the hospital (effectively increasing what everyone else pays).
@VolcanicPenguin they already do that.. in LA they regularly take people from the ER and pay a cab to drop them off at the homeless free clinics on skid row...one poor woman was in a hospital gown with no shoes dumped and found by a clinic worker on the sidewalk
mark my words, that line is going to ensure that he won't win against obama, and for that matter, with the addition of perry into the race, won't even be the GOP candidate in the election..
@VolcanicPenguin Even if the law said to do what you are suggesting, no hospital would let people die without treating them. Whether you like it or not, everyone else is forced to pay the healthcare costs of the uninsured through increased insurance premiums and/or taxes.
@VolcanicPenguin Name one instance where a doctor has let someone die because they didn't have insurance. Good luck. If someone would rather die than be in debt, that was their choice/the families, not the doctor's lol.
Romney hasn't flip flopped any more than any other candidate. He just gets singled out on it by people like you. Saying corporations are people was a good analogy in the given situation. By increasing taxes on corporations, it directly affects people in the form of less wages, less jobs, and lower stock values.
@Morghost Maybe he doesn't flipflop more than anyone else, but no one else flips and flops as largely as he does. Some people will change a little bit on an issue... Romney does a full 180. Of course "people like you" don't seem to mind that.
@Morghost Enormous bonuses and stock options for CEOs(e.g. United Health Group's Stephen J. Hemsley) and upper management also affecs wages, employment, and stocks.
People have a stake in corporations, but each of those people already has a vote and the right to contribute to a campaign. Giving corporations the same rights creates in our country a state of unequal voice: Rich people with large stock portfolios can speak for themselves and have those corporations (those ones in which they have a stake) speak for them again. Mitt is all about the Benjamins.

Morghost 6 months ago
@Morghost,
They've already done that for the past three decades, even after several tax breaks, decreases, etc. And the disparity between the line workers (so to speak) and the CEOs. in terms of pay, is obscene. Sorry, they've been given break after break and they've still screwed the middle and lower classes. Even Warren Buffett acknowledges this.
OxTheWriter 6 months ago
@Morghost Not true. If corporations raise prices (because of taxes), they will see lower demand. Remember economics, higher price means lower demand. In this economy, a corporation will need to keep their prices low to sale their product if they want to compete.
PoliticsILove 6 months ago
@PoliticsILove That is part of the reason our jobs are being shipped overseas. We have about the highest corporate taxes in the world, so overseas corporations can produce goods and ship them to the USA for less than what it costs to produce those same goods here.
Morghost 5 months ago

So people pay me well when I do a good job for them.
rpsvt1 4 months ago
@rpsvt1 u said it u r a SMALL business owner.. the multi-national corporations do not operate like u do..their business is driven by stock prices and financial manipulation..it has nothing to do with the product or the service..the corporations are sitting on a few trillion dollars in order to keep the jobless rate high because it serves their purpose..I am surprised when after everything that has happened people still turn a blind eye to reality and still live in the 19th century
xadam2dudex 4 months ago
@xadam2dudex Since when did business big or small ever benefit from their customers not being able to afford their products or services? Surely if they're customers are out of work this will occur. You've killed the golden goose.
Take Apple for example. They have a record amount of cash on hand. Why? because they used the cash they had available back when, and produced products that were amazing, and affordable. Why wouldn't they do it again?
rpsvt1 4 months ago

Morghost 6 months ago
@Morghost
Yeah you're right, if someone without insurance shows up at an an emergency room, we should just let them die.
VolcanicPenguin 6 months ago 10
@VolcanicPenguin they already do that.. in LA they regularly take people from the ER and pay a cab to drop them off at the homeless free clinics on skid row...one poor woman was in a hospital gown with no shoes dumped and found by a clinic worker on the sidewalk

"CORPORATIONS ARE PEOPLE"
mark my words, that line is going to ensure that he won't win against obama, and for that matter, with the addition of perry into the race, won't even be the GOP candidate in the election..
poops1 6 months ago
@VolcanicPenguin Even if the law said to do what you are suggesting, no hospital would let people die without treating them. Whether you like it or not, everyone else is forced to pay the healthcare costs of the uninsured through increased insurance premiums and/or taxes.
Morghost 6 months ago
@VolcanicPenguin Name one instance where a doctor has let someone die because they didn't have insurance. Good luck. If someone would rather die than be in debt, that was their choice/the families, not the doctor's lol.

@Riceater88
it came off to me as if you were arguing they shouldn't be treated. :P

Romney hasn't flip flopped any more than any other candidate. He just gets singled out on it by people like you. Saying corporations are people was a good analogy in the given situation. By increasing taxes on corporations, it directly affects people in the form of less wages, less jobs, and lower stock values.
Morghost 6 months ago
@Morghost Maybe he doesn't flipflop more than anyone else, but no one else flips and flops as largely as he does. Some people will change a little bit on an issue... Romney does a full 180. Of course "people like you" don't seem to mind that.

@Morghost Enormous bonuses and stock options for CEOs(e.g. United Health Group's Stephen J. Hemsley) and upper management also affecs wages, employment, and stocks.
