Thank you sir for this awesome idea. I went to michaels and purchased 2 foam sheets .89 each. some one wrap velcro 9.99. and made two 6 inch reflectors for starters. I took a bottle to make curves at the top edge of the sheets like your production models. To keep it from slipping of f my flash I glued a piece of velcro on both short sides of my flash. Then made slits like belt loops and ran the velcro through the reflector. Now when I wrap it around my flash there is no way for it to fall off.
Thanks A Lot Peter!!! The paper by the way is made by a company called "Creatology" and they are distributed by Michaels. I purchased 2 12x18 sheets for .99 cents each and I made 3 of the smaller units and 1 large unit. i will be testing the smaller units at an event I shoot for called PlayDate Nashville this evening.
I think the lighting tips were as valuable, if not more than the bounce card technique.
Great information! OK, the guy is a bit ADD, but his info is fantastic. I built 3 of these for less than $2.00 total (I had the glue and Velcro in the garage) out of two sheets of foam I bought at Michaels. They all have the black backing like the ones he sells on his website. They all work great. He also sells 5 or 6 versions of ABBC with the black backing on his website.
Thanks, built mine this morning... Works GREAT and you can't beat the price. It really does help to defuse the harsh flash. Can't wait to try it on people, I've got about 10,000 pictures of everything in my house. :)
Thanks Peter... I just got myself a 2nd hand 550EX and was wondering how to get it to diffuse just right. Watched your video and am going to go straight out to get some photo paper and a big rubber band. Shame we don't get that sponge paper here in Singapore, but I'm sure I'll make do with photo paper. Thanks for sharing the fantastic tips. My thanks from over this side of the world.
What a great bunch of advice and helpful info. Unfortunately, I do not have a flexible flash like yours. Only the built in on my D70 and a detachable which doesn't move at all. :(
Thanks a lot Peter, I have heard a lot about BBC and although I already have the Gary Fong device, yours cetrainly works VERY well, Thanks for sharing. Wayne Clarke UK
Thanks for the advice. I was considering buying a diffuser. But after watching your video, I decided to make one from your instructions,,,,, I then tested it out and realized it works really great...
thank you for the advice!!!! again what is the material you used to bounce the flash? I couldn't understand, I know is inkjet paper, but what kind? Again I have to thank you because I won't spend 50 bucks for that sphere diffuser anymore:)
Great video. You can find the foam at Walmart or Michaels craft store. Less than a dollar for a large sheet that you could easily make a couple of the bounce cards.
Pure genius! Thanx so much for sharing your knowledge. You just saved me $25. I was going to buy to LumiQuest version, but thanks to you and Ken Rockwell, I will do this myself..especially considering how much I like doing my own things, as opposed to paying someone. Thank you much.
Thanks, Pete! Followed a link from dphotojournal to get here. I've been meaning to try this, but with a cut-up PTFE milk bottle and a few staples. I really like the elastic band for attachment. I'll be keeping all your great tips in mind!
Im currently building myself a systemflash mounted Softbox (a small one when there's no need for a Big studio Flash with Softbox), maybee im gonna make an Instructionsvideo too :)
thank you so much! very very helpful and informational! lots of great, useful tips for newbie amateur photographers like myself who are still learning the basics to good lighting. thanks again!
Hey Peter. Great video and cool product. A request: I'd love to see a video how-to on making a simple at-home portrait studio for family photos. I've read a few things using affordable lighting (construction lighting?!) and bedsheets or painted panels from the home improvement store.
I found a foamy paper at Michaels craft store that I think is the same thing. Does anybody know? This stuff says "Easy to shape, but and glue! Foam Sheet" on the tag. I think it's mostly used for scrap-booking.
Comes in a few thicknesses and sells for about $.70 per 12x18 inch sheets.
Excellent advice and good presentation. You are a great teacher, and know alot about flash photography. I am still learning and appreciate your instruction about photography.
What a great video. Watching you make the bouncer is so much easier than reading about it. I accidently discovered that turning my flash behind me created beautiful light... I tried making a Stofen type difusser, using semi-opaque bottles but liked the behind me flash result the best. Now I can make a little bouncer to use too. Thank you so much for taking the time to get all the stuff together, and making and posting the video.
