  • I grew up beside an airfield that during the summer used to hold an air-show. Every year I was blessed to have the pleasure of a Spitfire with the Rolls Royce Merlin V12 engine flying right over the roof of the house. What a sound. :-)

  • Wow! Love the sound, Thank you for posting!

  • who the hell would take a V8 Over a 12 cylinder 1650 cubic inch rolls royce?? THE BEST SOUNDING WW2 FIGHTER ENGINE!! in one mans humble opinion.

  • Ugh stink. V8 sounds way better

  • Like someone wrote in comment to a different Merlin clip; The sound of freedom :)

  • Watch them in person running unlimited class hydroplanes... That will give you goose bumps. Never foreget seeing them as a kid in the '60s.

  • Thanks very much for this.

  • awesome they have the Lancaster exhaust nubs on them too.. best engines of WW2

  • Crickey, no wonder my Dad went deaf. He had to tune four at a time for a whole 6 years !!

    8'-)

    thanks for that.

  • beats Last Night of the bloody Proms!

  • I like the cut of your jib sir!

    waffe

  • The 1st Merlin with the metal prop spits flames all the time!!! Gotta love it, awesome!!! My best aero engine!!! But I partially agree with flexyco below, for the Bristol Centaurus engine does an incredible, deep - drone sound! Type "Sea Fury - old Warden VJ Display" and listen to it - awesome sound!!! Just do it! Enjoyment guaranteed!!! :-)

  • Merlins rule!! how much are they now, I need 4 to make my lancaster bomber...

  • but other direction next time please...

  • great sound!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whats the Yellow Prop plane in the background

  • A Bell P-39.

  • @AIRANORAK

that plane in the backgroung is a Me 109 from the german luftwaffe

  • used to work on these ,you made an old man smile!!!

  • I never imagined that could see a Merlin engine in operation !!

  • They'd better have those trailers tied down if there's any pitch in those props!!!

  • best sounding engine ever made

  • super soundje

  • I think it was this guy i seen at the R.A.F Woodvale model flying show in 2006 with two engines one of which had a contra rotating prop on it. He wasnt afraid to open them up a bit and run the two together to get the sound of a twin engined plane on takeoff. Thank you sir.
