I grew up beside an airfield that during the summer used to hold an air-show. Every year I was blessed to have the pleasure of a Spitfire with the Rolls Royce Merlin V12 engine flying right over the roof of the house. What a sound.

The 1st Merlin with the metal prop spits flames all the time!!! Gotta love it, awesome!!! My best aero engine!!! But I partially agree with flexyco below, for the Bristol Centaurus engine does an incredible, deep - drone sound! Type "Sea Fury - old Warden VJ Display" and listen to it - awesome sound!!! Just do it! Enjoyment guaranteed!!! :-)
I think it was this guy i seen at the R.A.F Woodvale model flying show in 2006 with two engines one of which had a contra rotating prop on it. He wasnt afraid to open them up a bit and run the two together to get the sound of a twin engined plane on takeoff. Thank you sir.

Watch them in person running unlimited class hydroplanes... That will give you goose bumps. Never foreget seeing them as a kid in the '60s.
