Born in 1973 (and growing up in 80s) I remember the fear. I remember even the escalation of 1982-1984 (deployment of both Pershing II and SS-20). The Czechoslovak TV fed us with similar nuke-war ridden programmes, there were even fantasy movies for children about the postnuclear world. I'm glad my daughters are not exposed to this kind of apocalyptic scare.
If you leave your home, authorities may use it for homeless families. If you are not in your home, authorities will not help you seek shelter or daily essentials. Mmmmm bbc at their best.
This was a terrible film. We dissected it while I was in the military. The civilians claimed it was "highly accurate" but those of us in the know knew it was based on pure fiction. Nothing realistic about it at all.
@TheBlacksmith45 Yes, you are right. The civilians foolishly believed that some people will survive thermo nuclear world war. The reality is, no one will.
The message of this film seems to be: confronted with Soviet belligerance in the early 1980's, the only viable option for the Free World was immediate and total surrender.
and yet - it was a Soviet Commander who went against his computer's orders twice in 1984 to launch against the USA. He simply didn't believe the perceived US attack was for real (turned out to be some low cloud).
But he was thrown out of the army for disobeying the protocol that says he should have launched the missiles. (although, secretly he got paid off well - the hierarchy must have been incredibly thankful)
This was SO close to happening. It's not funny in any way at all.
LOL this is one in a LONG line of urban myths from the cold war era. NO such protocols were ever issued, and there would be NO way that a single person could ever launch a retaliatory or first strike against another nation.
So many of these stories were floating around and yet not one of them could stand up to even casual scrutiny.
Watch the whole thing, the first 45 minutes are just like Coronation Street - we meet the characters going about their daily lives, planning for weddings, getting pissed at the pub etc... all the time, there's the news in the background which they occasionally comment on, as we all would.
Then .. we're with them in Sheffield as the nightmare hits. Easily the scariest thing the BBC has ever produced - not least because the government instruction messages are the real thing!
@EllPro Try watching it like I did when it was actually on the cards that it might happen. Not so funny then. I'm guessing that you're just too young to appreciate it. After being made the BBC only aired it twice due to it's content before they allowed it to be re-shown on digital nearly twenty years later. Maybe you should watch the whole thing before making childish comments. Stick to pap and leave the deeper stuff to grown ups.
@iansputnik Oh don't worry, it's even more possible and likely now than it was then. It's just that westerners are too fucking self deluded to understand that.
I'm old enough to have seen it the first time around - scared the shit out of me! We had an accidental alarm once - all of the sirens went off when I was a kid. I dropped a few pounds that day.
@simpsonfan13 Sadly, if a true to life film was created, nobody would believe it. It would be so horrifying that most viewers would consider it a fantasy.
My dad said he had a good film about nuclkear war in britain and kept saying throughout the whole film: "If this happened, We'd be dead". The film gave me nightmares, shakes and i even went into panic mode.
"Jesus Christ, they'v done it.... they've done it" ...... silence.... what else can one say? Damn scarey growing up during that time. I was a teenager when I saw this movie. Sometimes, it was hard to sleep during the 80's. To: all the rat-bastard governments and crazy people, GET YOUR DAMNED HANDS OFF THE FUCKING BUTTONS!!!!! Go ahead and kill each other. Leave the rest of us out of it. We are not your cannon fodder or play-toys.

@megatroll Yes it's us Big Bad Americans! we are purposely planning on unleashing Nuclear War upon the world for shits and giggles and making sure this planet is fucking destroyed! I mean if WE can't control it, we very well won't let anyone else do it!

Further, “The Wheel” has done as much damage as anything else, in our shared world!

I was grown up in the cold War.I got a nightmare in the autumn 1984.At Suncey morning at 7 o'clock,ALL sirens were going on with attack warnng!!
My father was so frightend,he was cring an screaming 2The Russians are coming!"..after 45 Minutes it all came to an End..but thePeople ware all very scared and nobody was calm.
This film reminds me on this swfull sunday.
But the Film MUST be seen, from ALL Political persons.
@Caddl123 I had a similar experience...I was in a busy shopping centre in 1982 when they tested the attack warning. 'All clear' tests were common in the 80's, but they did the real one this time. Literally EVERYBODY stopped walking and froze to the spot, before the sound abruptly ended. Many then burst into tears, some people even involuntarily vomited. I will never forget this event.
This is even worse than "The Day After!" Sure, we don't see bodies being graphically skeletonized or vintage stock footage of buildings being destroyed, but we do have the eerie silent bits, a woman peeing her pants, children crying loudly, a woman vanishing as everything turns white, and even A CHARRED BURNING BODY THAT IS STILL ALIVE!!!
I have never forgotten watching this programme the first time. I could barely get through it. Shattering to know that there are still enough nuclear weapons to destroy us many times over - And what if the loonies get one.....?
The biggest point that this film makes is that all this destruction and suffering is caused by politics and political ideology. This is really the whole point of the film - not the terrible effects of the war, but the fact that it is caused by political dogmatism. And for the future what we need to be wary of is not really the proliferation of nuclear weapons or technology, but the proliferation of blind political and ideological loyalty which might cause them to be used
Truly terrifying, isn't it ? And to think that there are psychotic creeps in the Pentagon and White House (no names) actually contemplating the 'utility' of a first nuclear strike against Russia (or China) !
Probably the same people who elsewhere worry about the effects of 'secondhand smoke' on children playing in Central Park, too.
Will sanity EVER break out on our beautiful planet ?
If not - DON'T expect a nice Hollywood Ending (c/w Heroic Speech by
@marvinc999 That's funny. I could have sworn that Obama recently signed a new START treaty with Russia to reduce nuclear arsenals to 5% of what they were in 1960.
Oh, and I recall him explicitly committing the United States not to use nuclear weapons against nonnuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, even if they attacked the United States with other WMDs.
Doesn't matter, I suppose. Brits will believe anything Jeremy Clarkson says about Americans.
He, after all, is An Honourable Man. Like Bill Clinton.
Nice to see all the US troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan, a renegotiation of NAFTA, the sidelining of the Wall Street Mafia in his Administration, and the end to all that creeping fascism under Bush.
But who mentioned Obama ?
Or any other well-groomed teleprompter reader, for that matter............................
@marvinc999 I was responding to your comment that the White House and Pentagon have "psychotic creeps" in them. You made that comment a week ago, and, well, Obama's currently the president.
It's not just Democrats either. Even Reagan was scared by the idea of nuclear war. When he was briefed by the Pentagon in October 1983, the Secretary of Defense said afterward that Reagan "had a very deep revulsion to the whole idea of nuclear weapons ."
Regan did sign the INF Treaty with Gorbachev, too.
World War 3 will be fought with gravity waves weapons and oneiric warfare tactics, nuclear weapons are of absolutely no military value in the complex and demanding world of this 21st century. The battle field is the human mind and the spoils of war is the soul. The goal of this war will be to takeover the source of living water. All comes from water and by water and we must takeover this water.
Then, if really happens the people of the southern hemisphere will be responsible to rebuild the world. The imperialist and colonialist countries of the north will be back to the Bronze Age and the first thing to do is block the frontiers to avoid the contaminated people. Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand will be the future.
I think that everyone who walks this earth should see this movie and then perhaps we can come to an agreement on disarming all nuclear weapons or at least anything larger than 50 kilotonnes.
Despite the fact this is about nuclear war & the after effects, typically English, we insert a funny section with the old man sat on the loo during the attack. Could you see the Americans doing that?
You American fuckers make me laugh going on about "this actually happened" NO IT DIDN'T it's hyperthetical, granted Sheffield in the UK may look as if it did happen because it's a shithole but trust me it's very alive and kicking, another thing that gets me about you Wanks sorry Yanks is that you probably have no inclination where the UK is let alone Sheffield is, when a group of US high school students where asked t0o place the UK on the Global map only 1!! fucking 1 got it right. Thick twats.
@rugbydazz Just because the folks who got their eyes melted out and their skin burned off were Japanese doesn't mean it didn't happen. I care alot less about where something went down and alot more that it happened at all.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@rugbydazz That may be the case. My country certainly seems to have an earned reputation for being populated with idiots. But still, you're hardly giving useful information. 1 student out of how many? 10? 100? 1000? And perhaps those who are saying this actually happened are referring to the two bombs my delightful country did drop, admittedly not on Sheffeild, but the folks who got pasted were just as instantaneously dead, or horribly burned, or fatally poisoned.
@HRCSJSUAMMAS, Sir don't be offended by my comment, although if your American i'm sure you would find it hard not to be offended by it, I used to live in the US for a long time, and I have alot of love for the US, it's just that it brought it all back to me when I used to get asked what part of London I was from and if I knew the Queen or Boy George, It was the lack of awareness of anything outside the United States that used to just enrage me.
@rugbydazz I'm less offended that terrified that it might be entirely accurate, to tell you the truth. Just in case, only two bombs have ever been dropped on cities, people. Hiroshima and Nagasaki. No other bombs. We good? Good.
@rugbydazz "Sir don't be offended by my comment?"
You took one clueless American kid and equated him to 307,006,550 other Americans, calling us all "American fuckers," saying we're all "thick twats" and "wanks sorry Yanks," then bashing us over a lack of geographical knowledge.
Pot's calling the kettle black there. 45% of Britons can't even find Switzerland on a map.
Yep, you sure have "alot of love for the US" to go off the rails with a comment like that! A lot of love to HATE that is.
@rugbydazz That may be the case. My country certainly seems to have an earned reputation for being populated with idiots. But still, you're hardly giving useful information. 1 student out of how many? 10? 100? 1000? And perhaps those who are saying this actually happened are referring to the two bombs my delightful country did drop, admittedly not on Sheffield, but the folks who got pasted were just as instantaneously dead, or horribly burned, or fatally poisoned.
@rugbydazz The reason they couldn't find it on a map is because, see, there is no more U.K. Now it's the United Arab Kingdom. Because you fucking pussy Brits have let them overrun your homeland without a shot being fired! Fucking cowards! Get down on your knees and say "Thank you, America, for saving our pussy asses in ww2" The only brit with any spine was Churchill, and guess what? You are all out of Churchills! Bitch.
@jamieg1tube and who has been holding your hands in the recent conflicts then......."oh it's been us them pussy brits!". And while we are on the subject of leaders the only american preident with any balls and no bullshit was Kennedy and look what happened to him, and oh regan he had his head screwed on too
What the fuck you talking about The United Arab Kingdom, last time I checked your beloved USA was overrun by mexicans and you are owned by China since ya $14 trillion dollars in debt so why dont you get on your knees and start sucking some
Asian dick, you bitchass stupid shit for brains dumb mutha fucking yank.
Oh and one more thing US citizens and your government need to stop pissing the rest of the world off since your rapidly loseing your superpower staus and your allies, Broke bitch at least our leaders are white.
And last but not least, we have spent the last near 70 years bending down and kissing your ass for the fucking loans you gave to us and we had to pay back with extortionate interest rates, but at leat we pay our debts, soon you may not be able to, keep up with your Mandarin lessons your gonna need them, especially the phrase, "Harder Sir please I can't feel your tiny dick in my ass" stupid fucking yank you got your head so far up ya ass you can't see the whole world laughing at u.
Hmmm...why so rude...I like the English, the Scotish, and the guys from Wales...(not to forget about Northern Ireland :) ) , they will make their way...and Im fu**ing glad that the Wehrmacht didnt overrun this wonderful piece of land.We are still "fighting" against England...but only at the football field ;) (soccer for the americanos)
Leaders who choose to “defend” their nations with nuclear weapons must face the fact that nuclear war is suicidal and not an option if their citizens are to survive. Suicide is not a defense.
@Dominic974280 Okay, it was fun, but now, back to the truth. NO, THIS DID NOT FUCKING HAPPEN, or the world would be a smoldering crater and you a malformed creature.
Scared the crap out of me as well. I was in my mid teens. Excellent story as the conflict escalates to a nuclear exchange. The portrayal of the horrific conditions faced by the survivors is too awful to contemplate.
@jenssoderberg awww the kid whos scared of a cold war movie tries to grow some balls on the internet by trolling my comment...you poor poor retard...haha
Seems to me, like you're the troll. Offending everyone for no reason at all. jenssoderberg is right, you simply lack the perspective, as the threat of nuclear warfare is now a distant memory. but in the 80's it wasn't.
@RosoMC Still not scary... I showed this to some of my co workers who were alive and well during the 80s and they say the same thing as I do... It seems to me like your just a bunch of pussies and that you try to hard to use spellcheck and unnecessarily large words to look smart...when you really aren't because you still make the basic errors that youtube doesn't correct... haha... reading your post was too funny... please respond trying to look smart again...hahaha
NOBODY, but NOBODY can properly survive a nuclear war. Even the survivors will have such shit lives they will wish they were dead. That is why I hope I am not unfortunate enough to have to face one.
Obviously, to the extremists who LOVE injustice, who force atheists and gays into prison in Iran, who torture & murder billions of animals in factory & fur farms in USA and skin animals alive in China, who force people to worship a shithead leader in North Korea - the events depicted in this movie "Threads" are trivial compared to their loss of power. They would LOVE roaming blind without water & food on the streets compared to the "horrible loss" of not being able to shove their laws on us.
I agree 100% with GoldsteinsBook. I support nuclear war for the complete OPPOSITE reason that rightwing conservatives like Thatcher-Reagans and the muslims who control Iran do. The USA, Peru, China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia - ANY country which imprisons the poor just for not being able to afford lawyer or for promoting atheism & gay rights or the right of women to vote, or for the poor rising up to retake their wealth from the rich - should be nuked in order to free all the prisoners.
I remember being draged into the livingroom by my mum to watch this, when i was about 8 or 9. Were we that close to all out nuke war in the 80's, or was it all BS?
You can bet your bottom dollar if this was a 'for real' scenario, exactly the same would be happening in the USSR as British Submarine launched Trident ballistic missiles would be doing exactly the same to the people of Russia. Even a relatively small nuclear Arsenal would more or less lay a large country waste. But as has been pointed out, it would have been a NATO V USSR conflict.
But the point is, nobody wins a nuclear war.........
Spot on. The impact it has on ordinary people is extremely correct. Never mind the dated (even at the time) special effects, as thats not what the movie is about.
In fact I'd say if this happened in the current UK climate, things would be a lot worse after the attack, as theres so much of a divide between the various cultures who live in the country nowadays.
Born in 1973 (and growing up in 80s) I remember the fear. I remember even the escalation of 1982-1984 (deployment of both Pershing II and SS-20).

If not - DON'T expect a nice Hollywood Ending (c/w Heroic Speech by
Mr President) !
marvinc999 1 year ago
@marvinc999 That's funny. I could have sworn that Obama recently signed a new START treaty with Russia to reduce nuclear arsenals to 5% of what they were in 1960.
Oh, and I recall him explicitly committing the United States not to use nuclear weapons against nonnuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, even if they attacked the United States with other WMDs.
Doesn't matter, I suppose. Brits will believe anything Jeremy Clarkson says about Americans.

Who mentioned Obama ?

They would LOVE roaming blind without water & food on the streets compared to the "horrible loss" of not being able to shove their laws on us.
deskset24 1 year ago
I agree 100% with GoldsteinsBook. I support nuclear war for the complete OPPOSITE reason that rightwing conservatives like Thatcher-Reagans and the muslims who control Iran do. The USA, Peru, China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia - ANY country which imprisons the poor just for not being able to afford lawyer or for promoting atheism & gay rights or the right of women to vote, or for the poor rising up to retake their wealth from the rich - should be nuked in order to free all the prisoners.

A Russian Early Warning station picked up news of an American missile attack in 1983. The automatic response was to retaliate.
But luckily, the guy in charge was just filling in for someone else. He simply didn't believe it and reset the computer.
Again, it said there was a missile attack.
He just didn't believe it and waited to see what happened.
It turned out to be unusally low cloud the satellites had picked up!
