Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. However, i want to ask you one thing.. Is it possible that by a decent portable voice recorder i get good sound quality for an acoustic guitar using a microphone after which i can transfer the data to my computer and use a software to edit the sound? And can i use a normal Dynamic microphone for recording the acoustic guitar? Thank you :)
at 2:16 you say hi mids and low mids.... that is NOT what those to knobs are for... the one you called hi mids is the mid boost/cut (volume) which is linked to the knob below it (the one you called the low mid) which is actually the frequency selection knob (for choosing which specific frequency (Hz.) you will be affecting). Good passion, but keep learning!
@TheHumanEquations I know that feeling. Engineers like this should listen not talk. Also being an engineer i thought you were meant to pay attention to get the best quality, so why all the interference. The more this guy speaks the worse he gets
Shut up! That was funny. In fact the whole thing was funny because I had to shut you up after you said that the auxillary sends were useless and that it didn't matter if a channel's EQ section had a parametric section or not. Jokes...
Great enthusiasm though, so keep going with the learning and sharing the knowledge.
So where is this great sound ? all i can hear is some ego maniac who thinks he knows what he's on about ?..i didn't hear any guitar or vocals ? nor did i hear any mention of how it depends on what kinda guitar you're playing ? and what kinda sound you're aiming to get ?
Typical music technology course bullshit ! this 'IS' how it's done !
Just for info, a plosive is a sound made when you build up air pressure behind your lips or behind your tongue and various parts of the roof of your mouth, and then suddenly release it in a little 'explosion' that tends to cause mike 'popping'. The English language includes the plosives P, B, T, D, K and T among others. An S sound is a sibilant, which is not so likely to cause popping.
I hate slating people but this dude is clueless. Please learn what you are talking about before instructing people. BTW you only have a three band eq. The top pot is gain and the bottom one is a sweep-able frequency selector. to say 1 setting works for both vocals and guitar is dumb, they'll end up fighting for the same part of the mix and it will end up sounding really muddy.. Anybody wanting to learn about recording move on to another video and let's hope that this one gets deleted!
hey, i own a condenser mic and i am trying to set it up to record acoustic and vocals at the same time. i kno this is possible. any advice please get back to me
@Tinari1020 Just record the guitar first and then when you've got a good take of the guitar. Then monitor the recording of the guitar in headphones and sing over the top with the vocal. Don't add any EQ during the recording, as you can fix it all in the mix later. Just make sure you have a really good signal into your recorder that isn't distorted or too weak. This will get you started. What are you using to record with? PC, tape or something else?
You can not get a terrible, terrible mic to ever sound absolutely amazing. you should learn about what ur talking about befor you make an instructional video.
i never said radioshack is worse than behringer, im saying choose one that doesnt suck and it SHOULD be a good place for a BEGINNER to start. i dont think itll work for everyone, but like i said, its just to get people moving, covering the basics... etc... the only place ill put your name is 15 year old kid that tries to be a troll and fails epically
Without reading the other comments, I'd like to add; u don't really know what your talking about. Saying that a behringer mixer is better then radioshacks, is like comparing Mcdonalds to Burger King. As for that fader setting; u have no headroom to work worth, and (this also goes for everything else on this video) how can u think that one setting is going to work for everyone? The only place I'll put your name is in my book of jokes!
@aliwhitwell thank you for the kind words! im glad i could help :) best of luck with your endeavor and let me know when you have tracks laid down and ready for listening!
Guitars always have nasty plosive sounds when they say words that start with "p". that's why we (never) use a windscreen to record a guitar, boys and girls, like @ 5:20.
@mrp123123123 lol sorry im in class and cant listen to check my mistake in the video, but if youre right, good catch and sorry about that! I meant with vocals lol
@thisaintron Still not accurate. They both control one frequency band of mids, but the second knob determines where that band is. Usually its selectable between about 400Hz to 8kHz. The first knob controls the gain at the frequency selected by the second knob.
I'm sorry, but I had to stop watching, because for a "how-to," you aren't quite grasping what your parametric EQ knobs do. The top one was correctly cited as highs, but the second is not "high-mids," its the gain level for your mids. The next, (low mids, as you called it) is actually the frequency that the gain knob is affecting. I hope this makes sense and helps you and all your viewers.
@pathosattrition I'm aware of the fact that they are gain controls for the mids, but I'm putting it the most comprehensively that I possibly can. On a 3 band EQ board, I would have said gain for the mids because there would be only one mid knob, but I didn't say that because there are two knobs and one controls the gain on a higher plane of mids and the other controls the gain of a lower plane of mids. Thanks for letting me know though

@HaythamHzee Absolutely you can. I do it all the time. Now that I've got a couple extra bucks, I bought a separate mic for the guitar, but for all intents and purposes, you can record both with the same mic, you should just EQ them a little differently to avoid things like frequency overlay.
dude you are struggeling to look cool! You really dont have to. You are doing a good job here. That´s all we are expecting from a good video! Respect though!
Well presented tutorial and very informative. I have aUSB conneting Yamaha MW10C mixing desk and I didn't actually know how to use it! Instructions were appalling. I've got a better idea after watching this.
I use Mixcraft DAW and that's very good. I keep getting clicks on playback and I'm now wondering if this is because my Samson Mic doesn't have one of those pop filters, although it seems to have one built in.
I'm interested to see if I can get a better reverb on the mixing desk now.
@Topdoginuk What is probably causing the pops is the electrical signal. If you look at the waveform after you record it and see little spikes in random places, it's the electricity. Try this: record silence, with the mic on. If you see spikes, it's the electricity. If you only experience pops during vocal recordings, those are called plosives and they're annoying as hell. They come from bursts of air hitting the diaphragm when you speak. You can kill them with a pop filter or a sock over the mic
thanks for the info . i really have no idea how to record myself playing the guitar and singing .... can someone tell me do i need to mics to do this at the same time ? or what do i do?

Ron - very much enjoyed your informative tutorial. Any information on which DI boxes you favor? I'm curious. Getting a clean but rich and full acoustic guitar sound is important to me; and, I think I'm getting a better signal through an XLR out and a DI box rather than the standard 1/4 inch guitar cable hooked to an amp or the PA. I'm curious about your thoughts. Best wishes and continued success... Travis

@xXJoshuaBarfieldXx thank you SO much for the kind words, i do what i can for people. anyways man, internal card works very well for me, they arent hard to install, but the only reason i use internal is because i record out of my house and i usually dont move my setup. this one is up to you, but i do recommend internal just to save yourself from more confusing wires and you can override every other sound coming out of your computer from anywhere else, so itll be coming out of the soundcard

true, but when it comes down to it they both basically do the same thing, pop filters are directional and restrict plosives and wind screens are for anything else from any direction and they help prevent small almost unnoticeable movement in the diaphragm which could cause feedback

Who do you think you are bullshitting mate. I have never heard so much crap in my life. It would have been better to let people think that you stupid, now they'll know for sure that you're thick after this video.
