THANKS for posting! Beautiful Technicolor photography! And quite a powerful switching scene. Poor Tom REALLY gets it from the strict & stern schoolmaster! Ouch to the max, daddy-o! That's gotta smart! I've read that this movie didnt' make enough when first released to make back its cost. Wonderful production values!

In the book Tom gets whipped for coming in late and telling the truth why he's late, not because he took the fall for Becky. And there was never a line "why are you so noble". I don't think this change for the movie enhanced the story.

@feyeter In the book he did take becky's punishment, but not for a note on a slate. She was snooping in Dobbin's desk and was reading the mysterious book he sometimes read in private. It was a medical book. Tom started her and she accidentally ripped it.

@daytraderfbf In some parts in America there are teachers who do that kind of shit, and do they go to jail? No, not really. They get away with it. It is 'the law' they supposedly have the right. There are loads of parents who beat up their children anyway. It's just a load of bullcrap. Maybe if a child is really out of control wack on the hand or leg, MAYBE, might be needed, but really, no, there are other ways to discipline children and people in general. Sadly we can forget that.

If that kids go to the police and said the principal did this, there are shown the door. If they said ,"My parents did it" - child protection serives gets involved. Why is it ok for a teacher/principal to do this?
