If you restring the guitar upside down like D.D. does it is a lot easier to play he did is so he could 1. pick faster and 2. he didn't have to stretch his hand up and across the neck he could play the top e at the speed EVH can tap the bottom e.

Just a tip to you all, when learning to pick fast, hold one side with your thumb flat and on the other side, have your index finger bent so the bent bone in your finger is the closest thing to the tip of the pic. Helped me learn this song. Some how it make fast picking so much easier.

With his tremolo picking technique he could probably masturbate a horse in a fraction of a second. Seriously though, there's a reason he's the king of surf rock guitar- this is not an easy song, and not for beginners. To tremolo pick that well you'd probably have to take up bouzouki.

people like this just over think stuff. He's naming out the frets, like that's the way to learn it. If you have even one shred of God given talent then all you have to do is listen to the song over and over like any kid would do and then repeat it on your guitar. How else did anyone learn to play?

@twangmang I learned bass/guitar mostly by ear, but I also took private lessons and this is the kind of thing that teachers do when you first start playing and haven't developed a good ear yet. Also I played saxophone and sang in choirs in high school and you almost never got to hear your part, you were expected to look at the music and practice until you got it right.

I've tried coins, not sure about USA coins but UK and HK coins have a lip around them.. not good. We used to put them on the tram tracks that the tram would flatten them, that makes a good pick.. but I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near a tram track or train track.. buy loads of picks and put them in your wallet. Stick them on the back of your guitar with double sided tape. Where one around your neck on a chain.....

Alternate picking fast across multiple string is hard and leaves a lot of opportunity for inconsistency. Also a major factor to the sound of the song is sliding up and down one string, which you lose if you play across multiple strings because you're just fretting notes and not gliding in between them.
