This is the most informative and educational video I have ever viewed concerning the technique involved in producing a hardcover book. Thank you very much for posting this. I imigine it possible even to fabricate my own tools based upon what I have seen here and manufacture my own book(s). I am not only impressed but also inspired.
Thank you for this video. Because of this, I was able to bind a 300 year old book I only had on pdf format. I followed the steps as closely as I could, and it has turned out beautifully. Thank you so much.
This procedure looks pretty long - I think they're gonna do this at my University tomorrow, but the deadline is like around mid day. What if there's too many people!?
As long as you're writing your own stuff, you should do a proper hardcover bind. Typeset, make imposition, fold signatures, stitch, round/back/line, trim, case in (or fix to split boards). The video's method is called "double fan binding." It's often used by libraries to give magazines and stuff a more durable binding & hard cover.
As for being as good as HP, if that's true you should leave the manufacture to your publisher, and you should have no problems finding one if it's that good... <_<
This is very inspirational. I learnt that how much time it will take to make a book, i'll never buy any book again. :) i swear. .. except school's textbooks. D: And, i want that paper cutter D:
wow. I can't believe how much work goes into making a book. I have a greater appreciation to this art.... thanks for educating us on the making of a book....
I'm fascinated. I am working on the same thing. But mine will be created inside a huge database run by a software. If I had been the age of this man, I would love to make books to fill my living room.
Great video of perfect binding. Where did you get your tools from? The book press and the frame aragement that you used to align things and clamp the book while it was assembled, look very useful, can I buy them from somewhere?
That is very impressive Rod!

Yes, it looks simple - I have made 000's of books by hand similiar to the video but there are several steps that appear to be easy but can go wrong.
Not counting the printing - takes about 20 minutes from start to finish to make a hard cover book.
