The LP is a reactionary party disguised as a "revolutionary" one because we haven't had libertarianism for so long. That's how people get sucked in. They don't realize this is exactly what we used to have before the rules changed. They believe we can turn the clock back, and limit government tremendously, and everything will be fine again. But they're dead wrong, and libertarianism would be disastrous for the US. I don't want Wall St. having even more power over our lives. That's insane.

The fact is, if we eliminated welfare benefits, a lot of people would suffer. All industrialized states have entitlements one way or another. They've realized libertarianism is NOT the way to go. Libertarianism just means as little gov't as possible, so of course it's not gonna help out a whole lot of people. It's based on a 19th-Century agrarian self-reliant philosophy which is not relevant today and hasn't been for over a century. Libertarians are living in the past, not the future.

You are failing to see some of the more substantive issues that libertarianism does address well, at least if looked at from a particular ethno-centricism (or Jingo-centrist, you may care to interject).

For instance, libertarianism, in its more modern engenderment-circa Goldwater,and the '64 election)-there has been a revisiting of the historical antecedents which are there for a reason. I believe the government has a stake in the general welfare-healthcare reform-"it" needs to know its place.

I guess what I am trying to say in my haze is that to reject all or most tenents of Libertarianism (especially as it is classically construed), I fear you have through the proverbial baby out with the bath water.

I, personally, am very much liberal on many things, if not everything, and I fail to see how my wanting government out of my personal life (ie:why a war on drugs and its casualties?), need be inimical to my liberal-mindedness. The GOP or Dems: More jails, and more of the same thing.

Sorry, man. I don't accept this quote. I'm an economic and social liberal, so I believe government has a duty to help the disadvantage rise up and become self-reliant. To say the gov't can't because it "makes them dependent" is passing the buck. It's idiotic. Economic libertarianism is little more than whining because you want to butt into other people's decisions on economics in terms of taking entitlements and such and tell them "You can't" because you disagree with the notion.

Libertarianism is not about "butting in on poeples' decisions on economics." It's about economic freedom. After Nixon cut all ties to the gold standard in '71 the dollar became political currency. The Fed can manipulate its value to their whim. Even private contracts were not allowed to use gold. The problem with the liberal big government view is that it's made people reliant on welfare. The best way to keep people from making meaningful changes is to give them constant handouts.
