@ILMVisualFx Hi! Thanks for the video! I'd like to ask a small question that boggles my mind. How long did it take You to build this famous 10,000 parts Optimus Prime? From concepts to actual test renders?
I am a high school student and I'm considering getting into vfx as a career. I really need some guidance as to what might benefit me or what are the requirements in order to be successful in this field. Are there any courses that deal with this vfx specifically? What skills do I need to have to start off?
Dear ILM, i have a question. i always wonder about what hardware you guys used for designing and rendering. PC or Mac. and how much for each? (like the ratio between using PC and Mac?)
Please, i bag you to answer my question. A lot of people ask what software is better for this and that. I'm working in maya and i dream the day i can get working in ILM and this lead's me to ask: Is maya the primary VFX software as people say it is? If so, what departments use it? The problem i'm facing so far is not achieving enough photorealism in Maya, getting things looking like pulled out from a great graphics game rather than real stuff. The same question for Nuke in compositing. Thanks!!!
@Satamanster We use Maya for animation - the look of the final render however is dependent on a number of variables such as shaders, materials, textures and of course the renderer itself.
Dear ILM, I really, really wanna ask this question from a long time a go. What software u guys used for Jurassic park? coz it's really photorealistic eventhough it made on 93.. :D and what program do you using to match everything (the 3d effects and etc.) with the original clip (I mean the color and etc.) and makes it photorealistic? coz your work since jurassic park (the first film I know it done by ILM) till Transformers is soo realistic!! good job!! :)
@TaraArtsMovie We used a number of different software packages, most of which were created in-house here at ILM. For animation however, we used SoftImage 3D which is still available via Autodesk. The color matching, tracking, and compositing was all done in our specialized software.
Can you tell me with how many people did you work on the tranformers 3 movie on the VFX side and what do you do meanwhile when a computer is compiling 4000frames of which each frame take 100+houres?
Im pretty good at 3dsmax now, and im thinking that after couple years still using 3dsmax and all my student time, is is just waste of time or will i rly get work with 3dsMax for visualFX?
@roux2k11 We currently use 3DS Max in our Environments Dept. so it's certainly a viable tool. Virtually all of the principles hold true from tool to tool so lessons and techniques learned in one can often be applied to others, in that sense its a fine package to use.
@omkarjere The characters are all rigged by ILM's Creature Rigging Department. With upwards of 50,000 movable parts on characters, many artists contribute to each character.
do ILM employees play around alot with the characters for movies after a production is over or when a production is over is the character just scrapped or hands off?
@petrucciphan The assets are all packaged and frozen for archiving purposes. If a sequel should come to light we will recall the archives, 'thaw' the asset and import it into our pipeline for reuse.
I want to work for you an animator! I know the Maya at the professional level, now do your portfolio, what are your requirements? or you do not have jobs?
Tell me please, in which programs are working developers "A LucalFilm company / Industrial light & magic" to create visual effects and animation for movies??
just want to know what programs work at all. (ILM)... in the future want work on ILM =)))
@rus0498 We use a host of commercial software such as Autodesk's Maya and Inferno; The Foundry's Nuke and Ocula; Adobe After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator; Side Effects Houdini, and plenty of proprietary software as well.
@ILMVisualFX I am extremely impressed to see these comments being replied to on such common occasion, whoever runs this YouTube channel for ILM should be proud, because answering these questions that people have is extremely important for those who want to work there in the future, and it's increasingly hard to find in-depth information on the techniques and methods of popular special effects companies (and just the industry itself) without having the ability to physically ask those who know.
@ILMVisualFX Oh my god? you made your own software to build transformers? well let me ask : So i can't train my animating skills for my future to edit these kind a animations?
@joshuathejedi Thanks for your question. In answer to your question, ILM did not create Transformers that honor goes to Hasbro where the toy line was created back in the 1980s. ILM was the lead visual effects house contributing visual effects work to each of the three films in the franchise.
Didn't learn anything new, other than that they put a pole to get the lighting in scenes. ILM is still the most amazing animation company I've ever seen though.
Hello ILM for the 3D animation you use 3D Max ? or other programs ? Thanks
