  • Their ONLY major hit in U.S.? What about "Run to Me"? They used to play that a lot on the radio here, so I think it was a pretty big hit too.

  • @73849309378 This song made #58 on the Billboard Top 100 '68, 'Run To Me' was considered a minor hit, as it only made it to #121. Btw, I do have 'Run To Me' posted on this channel...they played that quite a bit in the midwest. :)

  • @bze2nlz4 I know, that's where I live. And that's why I thought it was a pretty big hit. It was here anyway! Man I sure would have figured it made it higher than that. Also, I thought they were a U.S. group all this time. I guess because of the name Montanas. And their English accent wasn't very apparent on their recordings. Anyway thanks for sharing the great music from a great group!

  • @73849309378 You're welcome, and back then I also thought they were an American group! Always wondered why they never had more hits. It's a shame they didn't do as well as the rest of the 'British Invasion'...I loved their music!

  • @bze2nlz4 I must be missing something here! I didn't think these songs were all that great . The one song by The Montanas that really struck me was "Take My Hand". The first couple of times I heard it, I couldn't get the harmonies and the melody out of my head for days! Great music was so prevalent way back then that many good 45's fell off the radar screen and were forgotten (e.g. "Sunshine Ship" by Arthur, Hurley & Gottlieb). I wish these songs could be rediscovered today!

  • @73849309378 A 60's band called the Crockers will be appearing at Brierley Hill Civic on Dec. 10 featuring 3 original members of The Montanas plus members of Finders Keepers, Californians and Light Fantastic . Tickets on sale from Dudley council plus

  • I have a mint 45 in mono. Thanks for posting this great stereo copy.

  • @videoarchiveman You're welcome :) I used to have that 45 but I played the life out of it!

  • According to my British price guide, the Montanas released 8 singles on the Pye label from '65 to'70. Don't see an album released here-sad! You Got to Be Loved is a great, great song. I gotta get that cd compilation.

  • I bought this one when it came out. I think the label was Independence. Nice song.

  • @sherriandjack1 I can't believe this tune only made it to number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 - It should have been either Top 10 or Top 5, for that matter!

  • @sherriandjack1 also written by Tony Hatch, who was responsible for those great Petula Clark tunes-

  • ive got the record oh susanna still play it

  • use to see them alot great group in 60s should havebeen top dogs when you hear the crap today

  • @blinker80 Couldn't agree more.

  • what happened to john jones is he still with us a great midland group

  • I've always considered this song as one of my favorite 5 songs of all-time. Absolutely fabulous harmonization!

  • My brother was the drummer, Rob Elcock, he unfortunately died in 1999.. a great drummer and sadly missed..

  • Unfortunately they are not all alive.. my brother was Rob Elcock the drummer, he passed away in 1999.. sadly missed..

  • Brilliant UK Pop ! --So many happy memories of seeing The Montanas live late sixties / early seventies. Loved their music and their very funny comedy mime act. AND its my understanding that a one off 2011 reunion gig is planned --does any one know where it will happen ????

  • This Song is GREAT, I could never find it on a single, but I did grab up a CD of various artist's only because THIS was on it. Love this tune. Thanks.

  • If this isn't one of the biggest songs to have come out of 1968 as far as Billboard is concerned, then it most certainly was on my charts!!. As a matter a fact it has to be in my Top 5 of that years or I'm Lady Madonna, and that song dosen't even make my Top 100 of that year. So what is, if it isn`t. The Montanas. Well theres Cinnamon by Derek, Chewy Chewy by The Ohio Express, Mighty Quinn by Manfed Mann, Eleanore by The Turtles, We Can Fly by The Cowsills, Sunshine of your Love by Cream.lol

  • @Ezdduf4kuZ This group was sadly overlooked. And it was hard to pick just a few favorites...they were all great. In my opinion, '64-'74 were the best years for music. Ever.

  • @bze2nlz4 Its the wee hours of the morning and the snow is seemingly inching its way down the mountainsides. Yes Im talking Lotusland (Vancouver), Cdas evergreen playground. Anyway I felt like making another comment already, afterll I tune this gem in thrice a wk, Believe me when I tell you that this hit was a #1 hit for 2 weeks mainly owing to the request line, supported by the highshool bracket. Billboard not only overlooked alot of #1 hits, they also didso with the teens who rated them.

  • @bze2nlz4 I have the 45, it's also on my mp3 player. One of my favorite songs from that year. I agree that those were great years for pop music.

  • @bze2nlz4 I didn't know they were part of the British Invasion & I also note that they had more than this major hit to their name. I have to wonder what gives sometimes. When it came to the Beatles, we heard 'em all. By the way Anthony Callea is the biggest name in Australia right now & had the biggest hit with "Rain". which has never been played here in Canada. In otherwords this action is still ongoing but alas now we have Youtube now to pick & chose & to keep in touch. lol.

  • @Ezdduf4kuZ

thank you for your comments - they are really nice to see!

i love my dad so much .. Bill Hayward-lead guitarist backing vocalist of the Montanas

i so wish they would do a reunion gig while they are still alive! xxx

  • @Ezdduf4kuZ Montanas reunion gig Wolverhampton Grand Theatre Sunday 4th September 2011 , it`s early days but all band mebers have agreed for the one off gig ( including synth player Terry Rowley who lives in Tenerife ) supported by the Californians and Light Fantastic More updates to follow.

  • Never heard of this group until YT. This has got to be one of best songs of the 60s. Hard to believe it only made it to #57 on Billboard. Thanks for posting.

  • Dad is in the process of completing his collection of Montanas singles, the one he can`t get is I`m Gonna Change, on Independant records, follow up to You Gotta be Loved ?

  • My brother Rob elcock joined the group in the early seventies as drummer, i loved going to watch them play!! they were all great chaps. love listening to them again. my brother died in 1999. he is sadly missed and was a great drummer.

  • oh ok thanks bze2nlz4...I am new to this LOL

  • OASISWOLFMAN...wow man that is sooo cool! I loved this group but heard very little in the states..wow I remember the "swinging London days of the 60's-I was just a kid..seems like yesterday really...hope your dad's well!

  • @bze2nlz4 Dad is in the process of completing his collection of Montanas singles, the one he can`t get is I`m Gonna Change, on Independant records, follow up to You Gotta be Loved ?

  • just a follow on from my comment im meeting up with Jake next week i work in the Cavern Cub in Liverpool and he mailed me and said he was comming down for a beer , cheers.

  • i was proud to be a Montana roadie great guys so very underated , oh! happy days.

  • @roadieles How cool! You may want to see the comment below from OASISWOLFMAN-- says he is Jake Elcock's son.

  • @roadieles ... Was just reading yoru comment about being The Montanas roadie, bet you had a great laugh, although must have been hard work too. Me and my mates used to watch them when they came to Kettering, they were probably 1 of 4 bands we really rated, the others???..... Light Fantastic of course & London band... Madrigal & Pebbles... Yep happy days . I hope The Montantas re union comes off next year.

  • Such a great song written by Tony Hatch (the guy responsible for all those great Petula Clark hits) - unfortunately, this tune made to #57 on the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-1968-

  • @christheone8773 Did not know this--thanks for the info! I can definitely hear similarities in the beat and style to a couple of her songs, particularly, "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love."

  • @rocco4116 ,

Great to see this on You Tube, my dad, Jake Elcock, from Dudley, was bass player with the band,Thank You !

  • @OASISWOLFMAN You're welcome! That's so cool about your dad--it's a shame they didn't have more hits--I loved their sound. Really wore out this 45 :)

  • @rocco4116 Thanks for the comment and information! I do have "Run To Me" posted, but in mono.

  • Great song! From which CD is it from?

  • @virmalised I have it on an out-of-print compilation from 1996: Dick Bartley Presents Collector's Essentials: The '60s. You can still get it on Amazon, but it's getting pricey!

  • Thank you! :) Just ordered it! I have been looking for the stereo version years. During the 60´s it was released in stereo on Marble Arch LP "More hits of the 68" , now finally on CD :) Thanks again.

  • @virmalised You're welcome! This is a great cd, because it has several other obscure one-hit-wonders as well. :)

  • This sounds great in stereo, thanks for the post of this classic. The vocal and instrumental harmonies are so clean.

  • @jfs356 Thanks--I was lucky to get a hold of this some years back. My 45 was in pretty bad shape!

  • Thanks for sharing! I never heard this one before- it kind of reminds me of a Keith style song. Ron
