  • I haven't watched this one in quite a while. And just by coincidence, I checked it out exactly five years to the day after it had first been uploaded.

  • I think around the 1:40 mark looks like Siskel and Ebert kinda broke from the script.

  • OSCAR: MACHIVELLIAN GENIUS

  • Oscar the Grouch: one of history's greatest trolls

  • "You gonna put up with that?" lol @ Oscar instigating these arguments!

  • It always seems like all of the celebrities who come on the show are always loving the experience. I'm surprised that Gregory Peck never did the show, seems like something he would have gotten a kick out of.

  • oscar you lil sinner

  • I don't think Sikel or Ebert ever actually gave a "sideways thumb" review, however I know there were times when one or the other would watch a film and report having mixed feelings about it, and then give what they called a "marginal" thumbs up or down.

  • "You gonna take that sitting down?"

"A critic takes everything sitting down!"

  • I can imagine kids doing the thumbs up and down in school

Tommy: Hey Billy I don't like you *Thumbs Down*

    Billy: PUNCH!

  • Oscar the Grouch is a manipulative SOB

  • I've been wondering - why doesn't YouTube allow us to do a "thumbs sideways"?

  • siskel and ebert must have been high on drugs to do this!! lol.

  • Well, Thumbs Up + Thumbs Down averave into a Thumbs sideways.

  • cheesy but cute and funny : }

  • This is so great!! it seems that sesame street had alot of guest stars on the show!!

  • That was awesome. I'm doing my critic exercises as we speak.

  • this is funny!! i like the critic excerise bit.

  • THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN

  • Oscar was a wonderful childhood memory, too bad he went away for "Influencing Antisocial issues"

  • Oh my god, this is priceless!

  • haha! I love them.

This is sophistacated humor for kids. I wish kids' TV had the nerve to be this smart today.

  • Me too. A lot of kids' shows these days are really jank.

  • I have always sided with Ebert on the "Thumb sideways" issue. lol

  • This is charming. Siskel and Ebert should also have met Waldorf and Stattler, now, that would have been a "sritic tag team match" !

  • man sesame street got the COOLEST guests EVER!

  • This is cute, gives a good feeling! Siskel and Ebert should have meet Waldorf and Stattler, now that would have been a tag team "fight"!

  • lol critic excersizes lol

  • After seeing this sketch for the first time in nearly 20 years, I've actually started using "Thumbs Sideways" myself. I guess it would be equivalent to "Rent It/Wait for the Dollar Theater/Wait for a TV Airing".

  • Maybe you like a "thumbs sideways" movie, but you don't really know why.

  • LOL XD

  • so charming

  • My God, I just dipped very deep into the well of my childhood here.

  • Its a shame the show will be over next month. Even though its was never the same since siskel died. Coming soon a hipper new movie critic from ABC

  • After having watched a bunch of old Siskel and Ebert reviews, this seems even funnier than before. I especially like the debate on "Cinderella"...It's almost like something from the show itself.

  • I remember this clip, I like the part when they say, "Thumbs Up", "Thumbs Down". Oscar's questions about Thumb Sideways made Siskel and Ebert argue.

  • I remember this. It was funny when they both Siskel and Ebert both did thumbs down and thumbs up.

  • This reminded me of somthing. Thumbs up and down orgiated in Rome with the Gladiator fights and if a defeated Gladiator was not killed the crowd gave thumbs up to signal he should live and thumbs down to signal he should die. Maybe thumbs sideways ment he should be very hurt but not killed. :)

  • Thanks so much for posting this; it must've been a great moment for both critics to be joined by two memorable characters from "Sesame Street."

  • Ah, back when children's television shows used to actually teach you something instead of trying to keep kids as far away from reality as possible. Thanks for the vid!

  • YES! Another long-lost gem I've been looking for! (Especially the surprise from Oscar at the end!)

  • LOL, Siskel and Ebert looked like they had a lot of fun doing this.

  • Siskel and Ebert were kinda like brothers!

  • RIP Siskel :(

    This was wonderful, thank you!

  • haha Oscar, "You gonna take that?" rotfl

  • "Nobody wants to see a thumbs sideways picture."

Yeah, sure, Gene. And I suppose they DO want to see a thumbs down picture?

  • Well, personally, I go with Roger's opinion, and I guess Roger's the one who invented thumbs sideways!

  • One thumbs sideways movie I can think of is Lion King 3. I liked it because we get to see Timon and Pumbaa and find out their secrets but calling it 3 outside USA is not neserceriy. 1 and a half would make more sense everywhere because it's not a sequel in a sense.

  • I think the idea is that since no one wants to see a thumbs sideways movie, then you might as well put the thumbs down.

  • There should be a thumbs sideways rating.

  • Wonderful, I think Ropert and Ebert should do this for Sesame Street parts.

  • hahahahahah

  • I love how Oscar only gives thumbs down. Not surprising really.

  • LOL! How cute....

  • ROFL @ Oscar, "Heh heh heh!"

  • hahahaha, niccceee!

  • Nice one, Oscar.

  • siskel is gone but siskel and ebert appearance still lives on in this clip on sesame street.

  • What a great way to teach opposites.

Interestingly enough, the original Sneak Previews was on PBS. (However, I'm assuming that this was done when they had become more popular with their syndicated series "At the Movies." Correct me if I'm wrong.)

  • Far as I know, this was even later, in the "Siskel and Ebert" days.

  • Famous for arguing. (or at least discussing) that is what makes those review shows so much fun and informative

  • RIP Gene Siskel

  • Awesome! Good old Oscar pulling the Bugs Bunny routine! LOL :-) This is definitely 2 thumbs up! ;-)

  • YES! I was hoping someone would upload this.

  • The sad part was that Siskel and Ebert were not on very good terms with one another off screen.

I guess Oscar was there because he's good at talking trash.

  • They didn't get along at first, but they became closer as time went on.

  • If I recall, they were close enough to where Roger took Gene's kids to see 'The Phantom Menace' when it came out.

  • Ebert has said in interviews that he and Gene were like brothers. They argued a LOT, but it was out of love.

  • Thanks so much for your comment. What bonded them was a common love, FILM. They both wanted to see the best, they both wanted to share the same awe. When you find someone who is willing and able to share in your search, you have found a brother or sister. GREAT COMMENT!!!! Again, thanks.
