I donated platelets 5 times this year. I thought the staff who inserts the needle are nurses. But they aren't, there job title is certifed medical assistants (CMA) No wonder they work 2 jobs. They say working at donor places suck, in other words... their pay check
@char675 they are CMAs but they've been trained/certified as Phlebotomists (although in some places they hire them as a CMA and make them do phlebotomy but don't give them that title and pay them as a CMA just like some places hire patient assistants with EKG training but don't allow them the title of EKG technician (which would in some cases might entitle them to higher pay). Nurses (or somebody with a license) also supervise these places, often they are either new nurses or older ones.
Last oct 26 i have an exp. about Apheresis im layed in bed almost 70Minutes...and i see the screen of electroninic machine. 5.0X10ml its no pain..( my blood type is O+)
With the latest upgrade to the machines (they changed the speed / duration of what they draw), I usually donate either "double plasma, double platelets", or "triple platelets". Takes about 2 hours, but there's an Internet terminal at the blood center to surf the net with (or watch DVDs on) while waiting. Just got the 9 gallon pin.
