  • May I ask how you removed the white line from your pickguard? Thank you for this tutorial.

  • @TheMaddenfan123

You can either use a 8 hole 1-ply like me or simply a black marker pen on the white line of the 3-plys.

  • @TheMaddenfan123

    Sharpie. Worked perfect for me.

  • every time I used to try this my guitar would fall hideously out of tune - now i have a Gilmour Relic Strat, and all is fine..

  • BjornRiis - excellent! this is what im looking for!

    thanks a lot!!!

ive see many solos cover... but no one that can't do what you explain in this video. even petrucci! :))) i dont know why hi dont use this lick...

but i think this is heart of "comfortable numb".

without this piece -- any cover is only a "comedy on a theme". i'm not kidding.

little sad, because my guitar hasn't got tremolo...

did you know, whiy i can replace "tremolo effect" with bending ? or releasing strings

  • what about the demo version of the two solos? (which are in the demo-album called "The wall under construction")

  • Thanks a lot for this trick! Very helpful!!

I have a question: how did you set the delay exactly? Feedback, repeats, etc...?

  • @VSmolsky

Can't remember what I used for this clip but it's usually around 550-600ms on Comf Numb.

  • Thanks a lot man, I couldn't have ever figured out what he was doing by myself.

  • i like it

  • what>! black strat?! that gilmours!

  • Best part of his whole solo!

  • Bjorn, are you wearing a KISS Army t-shirt? Pink Floyd and early KISS are two of my favorite bands!

  • Yeah! I'm always been a huge Kiss fan! Gonna see them live here in Oslo this summer! Cheers!

  • I love your sound! Subscribed!

  • Hey excellent sound and video. This is the closest I have seen anyone get to Gilmour's sound on Pulse.

    I have one question.

I have a Little Big Muff which sounds fine except it is extremely noisy. I listened to your guitar sound and I could not detect much noise. How do you keep all of your effect and the Big Muff so quiet?

  • Thanks! The clips are recorded at home and the volume is really low... you can hear the pick hitting the strings :) However, eliminating noise consists of many things but you'll need to find the right balance between each pedal and find settings that suits your guitar, amp and the place your playing in. Playing at home usually requires settings much different from what David's using on stage. Cheers!

  • five stars bjorn... could you please post more video tutorials/lessons on youtube... "thank you very much indeed"

  • Good job again, Bjorn :)

  • Hi, excellent tutorial, i have a question:

the dd2 dont have a selector for 550 ms. Wich setting put on your dd2 ?

    Thanks

  • I've set the time at 3:00 o'clock but I know these DD2s don't always have the same range on the time control.

  • My Friend..please answer me!

where i can get the vintage big muff like yours?

  • These aren't made anymore but they're easy to fin on EBay... a bit pricy these days though.

  • Bjorn,

Glad to see you here on youtube. Your attention to detail to achieve THE sound is an inspiration. Thanks again for taking the time to help us all find THE sound! You da man! Take it easy.

  • Thanks!

  • Sounds so close!!!

I have three quick questions for you:

    (1) Are you doing Big Muff into the Boss or the Boss into the Big Muff? and

    (2) Which mod did you get for the BD-2?

    (3) What setting do you typically use for this?

Sounds great and keep making more videos!

  • 1. Muff > Boss

    2. I bought form a Danish dealer. The mod is similar to Keeley and Analogman.

    3. volume 2:00, tone 10:00, gain 10:00

  • quick question, didn't gilmour use "nashville tuning" in this song?

  • Yes, on the acoustic guitar on the chorus.

  • Thanks Man!

  • I never thought it would be that simple. Thanks for the tip!

P.S.: Awesome website!!! I love it!

  • GREAT ONE MAN!

I notice that ur using a DD-2. Im loking for a delay and leaning toward the DD-3. Advice? Caution? Thanks.

  • The DD2 is no longer being made but you can easily find these on EBay. Definitely better sounding than the DD3.

  • well done my friend!!! I think it could be better if you try with the delay setting at 400 ms. Let me know if it works better I think so!

  • Nice nice nice ! You're great !

  • Great site and great lesson! I just put a neck/bridge switch in my Strat (Fat 50's neck, SSL-5 bridge).

Do you know if David used the Black Strat on Numb? Do you think he's running the neck and bridge on the 2nd solo? I'm still getting use to the new sound so I'm not trusting my ears.

  • He recorded the song with the Black Strat. At the time the guitar had a DiMarzio FS1 bridge pickup. The SSL was installed just prior to the tour in 1980. The pickup combo was used on teh first solo but not on the second/main solo.

  • Thanks buddy! Keep up the great work. Great stuff you're playing.

I did some research on the FS1 and they seem pretty similar to an SSL-5 as far as DC resistance and resonant peaks go (about 13k and 5khz). Never heard one though. Love my SSL-5!

  • nice but as you pull ont the tremelo arm you should do a vibrato like David does (did)

  • that's great man. very useful tutorial. Thanks a lot!

  • of course i played floyd stuff: Time, Comf Numb (and I hit the opening harmonic), Echoes (and went to the middle pickup for the funk portion), Shine on and Hey you..I wish i played through a Hiwatt to get even closer to his sound though...Try one out if you have the chance!

  • Hey Bjorn..i love love love your gilmourish website..its the best equipment and setting page ever..as well as the backing tracks...today i got to play the Relic David Gilmour Strat and it was great..i played it through a cornford amp because that was what the salesman let me play through..I like the little toggle switch that combines pickups a lot and the tone from the neck and bridge pickups are phenomenal...

  • Bjorn, what's the best way to get the tremelo arm to stay put? I tried the ball point pen spring...and it didn't work the way it should...and how can i set the bridge to allow the tremelo arm to be pulled away from the guitar, without the bridge floating too much.

  • If the spring doesn't work you can use some teflon tape around the threads on the arm. The Callaham bridge will also keep the arm in place. You can't get pullbacks on a flat bridge.

  • Bjorn: Where are you from?

I'm from Argentina. One of the very few teenagers Floyd fan

  • I'm from Norway!

  • your delay is distorting(not by means of overdrive)but' you do a fine job man!!!

  • Du er norsk.. Hører det på engelsken din..

  • Og da mener du at engelsken stinker eller? He he! Joda, jeg er en ekte Oslo gutt :)

  • Konge.. Herlig Tutorial, da..

  • Are you buying the DG signature?

  • I haven't planed to no.

  • yeah 3999-4999 is too much.

  • I have been using Guitar Rig 3 and I think it gets a better sound than all those complicated pedals. Gilmore sounds are right on the button with Guitar Rig 3, using the High White amp, and the CAT distortion, with liberal echo, chorus flanging etc. Try one out some day, you will be amazed at how much computer modeling has advanced in just a few years. Good luck with the quest for good tone. Dave.

  • Bjorn are you gonna do a tour of your pedals and guitars?

  • that sounds expensive lol

couldnt have done a better video really

    fantastic :)

  • Thanks, We all want to reach that sound

  • Just for curiosity; do you use a Teardrop pick or a normal shaped one?

  • I'm using Gibson and Dunlop teardrops heavy gauge 1.0.

  • Bjorn,

I thought you had your trem screwed down? Do you have it floating now?

    Mark

  • No, it's still flat on the body but I'm not pulling the trem further up. Bend it down one whole note first and then pull it up to pitch.

  • Thanks for posting this! Is the 550ms delay time throughout the entire solo on PULSE or just during that part?

  • Gilmour turns on the delay only on this part. If you look at the original footage of the PULSE concert (not the one from the dvd), he steps on a pedal right before the mirror ball opens.

  • Your an amazing guitar player.

  • Nice clip!

I thought the trem of the red strat could only move down.

    Ernest

  • But if you don't mind, I would like some credit :). You and I are now the only two on youtube who knows how to do this.

  • I haven't gotten to it yet... I'm very pleased that I'm finally managing it! I'm writing an article about Comf Numb where I'm using this tutorial and you're credited. It will be posted on my site tomorrow. Cheers!

  • But of course the real credit goes to Gilmour, who created this masterpiece of a solo!

  • Hey you listened! Thanks.

  • Very cool tutorial. I'll be looking forward to more. It's also cool to finally hear you talk. I've read your blog for a couple years now and can finally put a voice to it! Haha.

  • Great tutorial Bjorn! The Diving effect is one of the most recognisible trademarks form David`s live playing.

  • wow, thanks i always thought it was bends and i could never get it to sound as smooth as the pulse version. again, thank you very much!

  • Excellent tutorial! More please!!!

  • THANK YOU BJORN!!!!

I have now finally mastered the P.U.L.S.E. Solo.

    Thanks Man.

    Cheers

  • execllent! thanks bjorn for this tips, it's a great moment from PULSE! see you later teacher!
