The carcasses you see at the end are what's left after the usable meat which is concentrated on the flippers is taken as well as the blubber (for seal oil) and pelts. Sealing is not a sport. The men that do this rely on it as part of their livlihoods. It is illegal to hunt the babies, the majority killed 95% are between 1-3 months old. No seal is skinned alive, it is impossible to do and doesn't benefit the sealer.

Where I'm from, northern Ontario, our culture is intertwined with Aboriginal (Ojibwe and Cree) tradition. Hunting and fishing are popular here and most hunters, when they go out to kill an animal, try to use every single piece of it they can. They respect the Nature that feeds them. It's illegal to kill a seal pup in Canada. If a sealer is killing a seal that is 2 weeks old, he is in violation of the law and should be prosecuted. The price of a pelt does not increase if it is skinned alive. Butchers nor sealers torture animals they kill.

Shooting them is actually LESS humane. The chances of hitting something that small in the right spot on moving ice isn't all that great, even for an experienced shooter. Most of the time, the bullet will hit the seal, but will not kill it instantly and it will just bleed slowly to death. The tool they use in the video is called a hakapik and that's the most humane way of doing it. Notice the first guy knocked out the seal with his first blow? The guy after that fucked up, though.
