@tardzillamovies They're two different audio engines. Try the demo of both and you'll see that each one works best on it's own material (Vocal Rider for vocals, Bass Rider for bass.)
this is my favorite plugin for vocals. It makes my life so much easier. I can have layers upon layers of vocals going on and they are all perfectly level with eachother, then all I have to do is some slight volume automation for fade ins and outs, and something like " oh the verses and harmonies should be at -2.4 on that bar, but all of it should go up on the chorus back to -1.8" its a blessing from the Gods.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but should I put the vocal rider at the start of the plugins chain or at the end of the chain on the vocal track?
I have a question guys, I was giving a stereo track and all the these vocals. Is vocal rider going to work if I create a group and just insert it on the Aux track? If so, can you tell me with the Aux need to me in read, write, latch etc?
Interesting tool. I wonder if it can be used to replace the compressor completely in some cases (it seems to work like a compressor with slow attack). For example, on bass.
Sorry to sound so stupid but could you demo how to send "all the tracks to bus one." I'm just starting out and love this plugin. Also , does it matter how much motion one wants the fader to have, or is it just a preferential thing? I wouldn't have a clue as to how much motion should be used for dance, rock or ballad vocals.
@mimoocho getting all the tracks to bus 1 is simple. just go to each individual track and pull it up kinda like how you put on a plug in. should be near the input/output. and with settings like this there is no wrong or right amount just use your ears till it sounds like a good mix :) hope that helps
I don't understand....Does this looks forward and determines which sound waves are softer in level and THAN it goes up to make the even with the rest of the track ?
That's the only thing that seems logical to use this plugin for.
Can I use it (successfully) for guitar? Compression seems to fatten and flatten but not reduce the "apparent" volume on some settings coming out of my guitaritsts POD amp modeler (already compressed).
@yappertrap Make sure you 'automation enable' the main fader of the plugin in your host's plugin toolbar, as well as have the plugin and track both in write mode.
@yappertrap I also followed the directions to the letter and it won't write for me either. I wonder if it has something to do with my C/24? I notice the faders on it are not moving when Vocal Rider is doing its thing, and if the faders on the C/24 aren't moving, then automation is not getting written. Frustrating.
This looks very useful to be honest. A question though - at what point would you then patch a compressor into the signal path, if you wanted to use it for colour or aditional dynamic control? The effects slots in most DAWs are pre-fader, correct? Or would most people stick the vocal rider after a compressor? Any tips greatly appreciated :)
Maybe I'm not following you when you said you sent all the tracks to bus 1. Are you saying vocal rider gives you the option to do that with in its self or you set all your tracks to bus 1 and the side chain to bus 1? My vocal rider only has a side chain option. I can't imagine setting say 60-80 tracks all to one buss for the purpose of using vocal rider. Am I missing something here?
say for example i have two vocal tracks with one where the vocalist stood slightly farther away from mic, but not out of phase. can this plug-in ride between the two tracks simultaneously?
I want to know what that metering box is.... The LED on to the left of the mixer. I could really use one of those for my home studio -- big display without opening my software mixer.
actually this is like a compressor (which does not effect the the sound.besides amplitude, hence a dynamic effect) the difference between this and a compressor is simply the ratio and speed at which it lowers or raises the amplitude. This is a lot more gradual than a compressor. Two totally different applications. but in theory they are doing similar things. And technically speaking a compressor alone does not "color" sound though people throw the term around loosely...it changes it dynamically
@ARWhite15 Dude... You don't recognize the industry standard and you write like a little Gangsta. Maybe you shouldn't watch these tutorials. An Eminem video should do for you.
I'm gonna get this too, it's especially usefull if your vocalist has a voice that cuts trough glass and she steps back at the mic to sing louder pieces, or the song isn't recorded in one go :)
@takafinir No this is the purpose of the plugin. Instead of using a compressor (which will add colouration) it simply brings the vocal within the set dynamic range, so you will preserve the dynamics desired but make the range smaller - not all over the place (which would be smashed by a compressor).
@djmmjd3 No resentment. Anything that saves time and sounds great works for me! I've never liked automating vocal rides. The trick with experience is knowing when something works and when it doesn't. Autotune, vocal riding, compressors, eq's.... They're all just tools. I can be handed every tool in a car mechanic's shop, but I still wouldn't want to try and fix a broken transmission. I'd rather be driving!
Regardless, engineers would always ride the fader even if there is a compressor enabled in the signal. If the compressor gets hit too hard, it sounds horrible. (in certain situations)
Dynamic processors take away from the tone so it would be best to apply some compression while riding the fader unless you want to use the comp as an effect.
@DigiRarefaction This is exactly why I am looking into this plugin. I have a vocal track that gets smashed by the compressor (and I suck at automation). Awesome plugin.
Saved my life with this ;)

I like the way it works. Even though the example in this video was a bit too much.
You could tell from closing your eyes, when Vocalrider raised or lowered the vocal track.
Thanks for the vid.

Not having to ride the faders is precisely why dynamics processors were invented (compressors/expanders). I don't understand how this is different?
IAmSippycup 2 years ago
You still can use compressors but, riding the fader will take a lot of the pressure off your compressor. I think this is a must have plug in
