There are a ton of epidemiological and statistical studies to back it up too. The sheer amount of disease risk elevation alone is preposterous.

That's a reason I occasionally smoke (the other reason is cancer), but the truth is, its still a product that I am in my legal right to consume and sometimes I like/want some nicotine - like during finals week when my stress level rises three fold. Car fumes probably give me as much carcinogens as second-hand smoke, so I'm more offended by the smell. So what really bothers me about smokers is the fact they smoke near my apartment door and my place has to stink for the next twenty minutes.
If I were to start wafting the smell of a sewer system through their apartments, I bet they would be annoyed too, but I A. Don't have any way to do that, and B. Am too polite for that.

I see a lot of smokers complain about non-smokers criticising them, but I've never actually seen this much myself. In fact what I see a lot of is smokers acting like people asking for them not to stand near them or to go outside and smoke is somehow infringing on their rights and they shouldn't be forced to put up with the inconvenience.
