  • The Dutch scanners aren't that graphic, yet seem highly effective at detecting contraband. In the United States, it shows every detail of your body, including genitals. I'm not sure about the radiation though.

  • Booked a flight Copenhagen - Manila recently. No direct link between the two available. Had a variety of travel agents suggesting stops Heathrow or Schiphol. No way.

    Thai Air offered flights Copenhagen - Bangkok - Manila. Alternatively Copenhagen - Doha - Manila, using Qatar Air as carrier. There are still ways of working around the scanner filth. That is, for people who care to look. Good luck.

I've inadvertently taken a large razor blade in my wallet (I forgot it was there) onto a plane and they never knew. If someone is really determined to go nuts and hijack a plane, they'll do it. And then they'll bring more measures in to try and stop it but as I say, if someone is determined...

    1) There is still no study of the impact of this extra raditation dose which will add up to the population average as a whole (one would also consider amount, position, time of exposure, gender, age, etc.).

    2) It's true that the emissions from the backscatter radiation x-ray full-body scanners should not be very penetrating. It's said that under ideal circumstances (machine is ok, procedure is ok) it should not penetrate much beyond the skin. But the skin is an organ itself, and there is no study about the impact on people who have or are prone to trigger a melanoma or some other serious skin disease.

    3) I do not trust in the expertise or competence of some companies to produce such a scanner, especially those who are not in the medical field. Theoretically, if it malfunctions, it could use doses higher than those predefined until this is noticed, which could take months, years, or until machine goes out of service.

    4) As an engineer, I totally disagree with ANYONE outside the physics/medical/engineering field to be operating ANY KIND of x-ray machine. Procedure plays a main role in the safety of this kind of device. it's not a harmless toy. As we saw, some officials are not even prepared to deal with people with artificial bladders or even children during pat-downs.

    5) X-ray body scanners are outdated. Nowadays you have safer alternatives like the "millimeter wave" scanner, which uses non-ionizing radiation (i.e. radio waves) and even thermal scanners in addition to those (but not substituting).

    Like you, I also could not care less about the images, only the health impact bothers me. I also wouldn't care about the pat-downs if agents had stricter training. Maybe a combined approach (like in so many occasions) would be the best.

  • @JohnM3D Radio waves are still ionizing radiation, and the amount of radiation you get from the scanner is equivalent to an hour standing outside in the sun. Either one works, but x-ray scanners aren't dangerous.

    "Radiation on the short-wavelength end of the electromagnetic spectrum—high frequency ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays—is ionizing. Lower-energy radiation such as visible light, microwaves, and radio waves are not."

    Do you know any dermatologist who would advise an hour standing outside in the sun without any sort of protection?

  • @JohnM3D From the way my physics teacher described it, it sounded like all EM radiation was ionizing. I don't think any dermatologist would recommend sitting outside for an hour w/o sunscreen, but it's not going to make any difference really, as it's still 1/500,000th of the radiation that would give you mild radiation poisoning.
