@marcohorowitz8 hahahaha!!! just looking at that "bust" I´m pretty sure it was a woman turning pages...but...good guess! That was probably his sister!
The Opus is called Oriental Fantasy; Islamey was suggesting oriental chords, tonalities and rhythms; hidden oriental scales. He got his inspiration from a Lezghinka song. Lezghinka ballads are danced by Georgians, Circassians, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Karachays, Mountain Jews, Terek Cossacks etc. The piece also has Tartar influence. Pogorelich is the ONLY performer I have heard that brings to his interpretation those Oriental tonalities and rhythms...Kudos for Ivo!
Pogorelich offers the possibility to hear a piece from a different point of view... I never heard some notes like that and I have to admit that's truely a masterpiece interpretation...
Thanks to YouTube one can get a direct insight into the difference between the 'old' and 'new' Pogorelich, be comparing e.g. his 1990 and 2007 Islamey (both the imperfect live recordings, though). While the former one sounds perhaps more sparkling I find the 'new' Pogorlich's Islamey more delicate, matured and profiled, while his virtuosity kept the highest pianistic standards. I find the comments like 'a damn shame' to 'new' Pogorelich (below) highly incompetent....
@Pogouldiwitz I don't know if he plans tour in America soon. For your information he is now (November 2010) touring Europe with Chopin 2nd concerto. I heard him playing this in Zagreb recently and this was OUTSTANDING!
This is surely not an official recording. This sounds really awful, like a cassette recorder hidden somewhere in the hall. No bass, excessive background noise, and before all, the piano is so far from the "microphone"... How can you appreciate his interpretation this way ? Anyhow...
Heard him play this live in Rotterdam ages ago. A memorable finish to a memorable concerto.

He broke one string of the piano, while playing this. Really.

This agogique is so good. And the voices are divided even better. Bravo, very particular fine quality even out of extreme brillance of virtuosity.

Of all the interpretations, I come back and back and back to this one.
Don't ask me why. How do I describe total satisfaction?

@Croat4747 - I'm in agreement with you. I only hope he'll return to the recording studio sometime soon. A tour in America would be nice, as well.

are you serious? Have you ever heard Rachmaninov, Horowitz, early Richter, Gilels etc. recordings?

Eccentric, but not ruined like the Rach Sonata #2! In fact, I think I might even like this more than his 1990 version(s)!
