  • Ed Coan the best powerlifter of anytime? That's got to be joke

  • to do it with such good form too

  • It sucks that nowadays people think that its normal to squat 1000lbs like this. The new gear is a different game, and so is today's depth.

  • Comment removed

  • he should have done a few calf raises before he racked it, lol

  • the music in the background is so terrible!

  • Damn I thought I needed spotters lol

  • Even more impressive considering he had to walk it out and back.

  • HAE HAE HAE... HAE HAE HAE HAE.. HAE HAE HAE HAE.. good lift for ed coan.. NINE FIFTY NINEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  • That's the way it was back then, the squat was deeper and the lifter had to walk it out and walk it back in.

  • If it ain't Raw, it ain't Real.

  • omg, that looked so easy

  • 959 squat in shitty gear they had back then, incredible, why so many dislikes?

  • @THEGATHERING20 simple word: envy

  • He shit himself coming up

  • wow i cant believe so many dislikes... this fucking trolls dont appreciate what good squats use to be... what a bunch of noobs -_-

  • to the second comment, bull shit, yes if you're a midget a squat might be easier, the strongest guys are all 6 ft tall with long limbs with a few exceptiomns. people that can't do what other people can do make excuses, i heard a personal trainer say you don't have to lefy heavy when the guy he was instructing was watching me do reps with 500 on squat, he also said you don't hava go that low, these lil, weak guys have manipulated an industry to make underwear models, people say don't go heavy

  • Haha he does it himself and it takes like 9 guys to help him

  • Ed Coan is the worst powerlifter on this planet!!!

  • @euro04champions

LOL he is a small guy too, according to the uploader.

  • Like it was nothing...

  • its amazing he is still alive.all the red meat and drugs..

  • I better the spotters arseholes were twitching like a rabbits nose!

  • Wow ! You need a whole army to spot for Big Ed !

  • Brilliant!!!!!

  • What is the song name

  • that was deep as fuck

  • ah...the old days...when people wend deep as fuck.

  • Amen to that.

  • @dm325 thanks for the tip... i will destroy my knees again and do 2 months of therapy again for you!!!!.... and maybe thousands of people will do the same cause of ur comment....

  • i like how each of his lifts are fast and explosive

  • Developing perfect legal depth on your squats will help your overall one rep max. go up. Do a quick utube search for : squatprecision. This device develops perfect legal depth - regardless of federation.

  • My dad and eddie are really close my middle name is coan and im tryin to follow in there foot steps

  • That's fuckin sweet! I assume youve met him?

  • Does anyone know the name of this song!!!???

  • Do a youtube search for squatprecision. Detecting perfect, legal squat depth for ANY federation is now available.

  • Who cares about his squat just holding the weight is enough to impress me.

  • I think Ed is awesome as for the drugs thing the solution is easy. The feds that dont test anything goes drugs, triple layer shirts etc etc non drug feds are just that. Get caught taking drugs in a non drug fed and you get banned for life from ALL FEDS... any records you have stripped from you. Also, if you lift in a fed that doesnt test for drugs you cant ever lift in a drug free fed very simple solution if only all fed's agreed to it.

  • Why would lifting in a non-tested fed ban you from lifting in a drug tested fed?

  • Now thats a fuckin squat! This should be used as education for people who think squat means slightly bending at the knees and moving the bar 10 centimeters haha. anyone know how much weight that was on?

  • The announcer says it at the end....959 pounds, which later weighed to be 961. This was shot during the 1991 USPF Nationals, where Ed Coan totalled 2403, with a 901 deadlift too at 220# ! The greatest total of all time!

  • i think 969

  • Well, Coan's one of teh biggest strength freaks ever. He used roids, he did positive test's, but many roiding superheavyweighters haven't even duplicated his feats of strength. So all admiration to the man. The greatest lifter, but also one of the smaller:D

  • ed coan is the god of powerlifting !!! anyone who dont agree, can kiss my ass :D

  • Nice kirk karwoski quote there. I also quoted that on a different video. Kirk and Coan are the kings of powerlifting

  • that's true! ^

  • I'm guessing you saw power unlimited?

  • yeah1111

  • he was on steroids he got caught but idk if he is on them anymore

  • put more wieght on there that was too easy u could have done another 100lbs probably cuz i lift too

  • Strong as hell he isnt on steriods

  • pound for pound coan is the greatest, a 900lbs deadlift at 220 lbs...coan the powerlifiting god !

  • UNREAL! Coan is the greatest.. I've heard Coan was capable of well over 800 in just a belt..Think about this,Coan in theory could squat 800-825(raw),bench 540(raw),deadlift 875(raw) 2240 total raw at 220!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont think anyone today can hit 2240 raw, regardless of weight..Bolton,Siders would struggle to hit 2240 raw

  • good point man

  • Coan deadlifted 900 pounds raw at 220, thats the most incredible lift I've ever heard of.. Btw Siders is a better lifter than Bolton, its just that Andy lifts multi-ply and for the record Siders totalled 2300 raw at Nerb before, IPF quality lifting and strictness!

  • coan is a god.

  • @Neilius27

Eric Lilliebridge is on his way... Stan Efferding and Mike Tuchscherer are other names up and coming.

  • hahaha fuck i love the song HEY HEY HEY!

  • Whats the song name?

  • yh loads of bb on juice but they come no where near this dude even if i was on juice i would never come close to ed's lifts u dumb fuck ed the man

  • Ed was old school and one of the lighest men ever to break the coveted 2400 combination (bench, deadlift, squat) in powerlifting. Even the 400lb monsters (the late OD Wilson comes to mind) at that time were in awe of his power at 240lbs.

  • Around 18 years agoI worked out at the same gym as OD. He was a nice guy. Unbelievably massive. Back was as wide as a bench press was long

  • All you "drug cheater" losers can get lost. Get over it, ALL the best powerlifters use something... Why don't any of you crybabies go juice and see how easy it is to squat 1000lbs, you will be very humbled.

  • its not that easy, ive been on the juice and i cant get closer to that (and i used to do pro olimpyc weight lifting...

  • That's why I said, it's not easy to squat 1000lbs even with steroids, all these people saying that steroids is the reason Ed Coan was so great; it's crybaby BS.

  • I agree, in order to be able to squat 1000 pounds you need the right GENETICS.

  • You also need to do this thing called 'squatting'. A lot of that actually.

  • What else would he be doing..? Rowing? Golfing?

  • Apparently you need the right GENETICS to squat a grand. Hmm, apparently everyone else should stop bothering to make the attempt to reach that point if they dont have the GENETICS.

  • No, everyone should not stop bothering. Many other factors like proper program, ample rest, good nutition, staying injury free and DESIRE are even more important. But, in truth it will probably take a person without great genetics longer to get there.

    let's move on..

  • i think what he ment was that they play a very larg role in the squat

  • Squat suit or not, some guys have squatted a grand or more with terrible genetics. I think everyone would agree that just wanting it bad enough and working hard are the important thing.

  • I dont like the 'genetics' nonsense either. Train to yur best... analazer is a copout superhero

  • doesnt matter whether you like it or not, genetics are very real and make a huge difference. the vast majority of powerlifters will never bench 600 raw. ady bolton squat 450lbs the first time he ever squatted, thats not normal.

  • Thats bullshit.

Genetics do play a roll, but not a huge one. Matt Kroc and Dave Tate have stated that there genetics suck, yet they have elite totals.

It's called hard work and determination buddy. Genetics didnt pull 1008.

  • They can state that they have shit genetics, doesnt mean its true. Genetics can make somone stronger in their 1st workout than a lifter with years of experience. I.e, bolton deadlifting 600 first time. So yes, genetics did pull 1008. I can bet my life there are 1000s of SHW lifters that work just as hard as bolton but will never lift 900.

  • This is absolutely true.

  • Well just saying "genetics" is too broad of a term to say that they do or don't play a role. For example, naturally high testosterone and growth hormone levels levels help lifters, but that doesn't matter because all of these guys use steroids and hGH. There are other HUGE genetic factors though such as bone structure, predominance of certain types of muscle fibers, and in the case of the deadlift having long arms and short legs helps.

  • What I was trying to argue is, that if someone who had half the determination of Andy Bolton or Ed coan, but had the same genetics, they wouldnt even come close to totalling what they do.

  • Yes, obviously human action is key on top of genetics. No one became a champion weightlifter without lifting weights in a manner conducive to success on the platform...but genetics play a very big role as well because many people work as hard as they can for decades without as much success as the elite lifters. It's as simple as that, some people are just better suited for certain activities and when you couple that with will and determination and a hefty dose of steroids, you get a champ.

  • @Ludichris8531 Very eloquent & knowledgeable !

  • @Ludichris8531 yeah the taller you are the stronger you will be

  • @Ludichris8531 Unless your at 100 percent full power full strength, cant get any stronger, you cant blame it on genitics, too many people use that as an excuse without getting to full potential

  • Uhhhh, I didn't suggest that anyone BLAME it on genetics, I don't think you have any idea what context my comment came out of. It was a discussion that I think began with someone saying "steroids don't get you anywhere unless you put in hard work". At this point I responded that of course hard work is required and that there are tons of people who work as hard or harder than they should in the gym and will never get as far as someone else doing the same thing who is also using steroids.

  • @Ludichris8531 True, it just comes down to how far your willing to go in order to win i guess

  • i agree

  • I wish i could say u're right but i think genetics has a really huge roll, everyday i workout i learn that more and more

  • so true.

  • @muzimuzi it has already been proven in the research. just look at VO2 maxs measurements. a person can be born to be a marathon runner (high VO2 max) and another person can train their entire life and not be able to achieve the same VO2 max. some people are just built to do certain things.

  • @aznmav2 Should i then be happy since You're telling me im not very strong not because i workout bad or not hard inuff but because genetics - Or should I be sad that im imprisoned in this weak body that no matter how much hard work u put into I'd never be one of the best because i just dont have the genes

I think i feel rather sad right now... well not sad but dissapointed :/

  • @muzimuzi being happy or sad is up to you. just because someone has the genetics for a sport, doesn't mean they have the work ethic as well. it is only when you combine the two that you can rise to the top.

  • @aznmav2 well ye but what if i have the ethic but not the genetic =P

I have a nice body shape - aka if u had put me back in the 70s with the more shaped bodybuilders back then i would have won in a bodybuilding compettiotn with a year or two of training... but i dont like bodybuilding as much as i like powerlifting and today its all about size to so I'd not win against guys such as cutler and coleman in bodybuilding

  • @muzimuzi if all fails, take steroids =P

  • @muzimuzi

Unless you were on an enormous amount of drugs, there would have been no chance of you winning in the 70's. Those guys were popping dbols like they were candy.

Anyways, nowadays, anabolic steroids can eliminate your weaknesses and deficiencies when it comes to bodybuilding and strength training. Of course, you still have to work very hard and eat right, but you can achieve a very high level of strength and muscle with a proper AAS regimen.

  • @WorldPeace4All6 well if you think back then they popped roids today its even worser i guess - look at today's people size and strength to alltho coan was a legend to his time u still have insanely strong people squating over 1000 pound or so

  • @muzimuzi hey coan squatted 1003 once you know.

  • @herc410 His all-time heaviest back squat is 1,038 lbs.

  • @KOFreestyler that 1038 was out of a monolift, his best walked out is 1019 i think.

  • @muzimuzi Is that 1000lbs raw? That doesn't sound raw. And of course people did/do steroids. That's not a big deal. That's like saying "It's even worse now a days, almost every professional baseball player uses a baseball bat." It's just part of powerlifting and bodybuilding.

  • @dlewis1498 no my bad it wasnt raw but the gear back then wasnt as good as now - so do the math - guy who weights about 240 pounds or less doing over 1K pound squat DEEP ... thats beast regardless - im sure these days if he was as strong as then he could get a half squat with 1150 or so with toady's super suits.

  • coan a drug cheater???

i know a lot of heavy juicer who can't sqaut with 400...

coan the god, there is no question.

  • That squat is unreal! Ed Coan, the best powerlifter to ever walk the face of the earth. Noone can even compare. I love him! :)

  • ..but I'm not bitter!! Just go lift and worry about your own lifting.

  • what´s his raw squat?

  • Huh? He just banged out 959 in the video... is that even a relevant question?

  • imagine if ed durin this time and hatfield in his prime today, with the new gear we have now, the numbers would be enormous with those 2

  • you sad wankers wouldn`t even squat 300 if you were juiced to the hilt... :) Let alone 400 or even 900 and more.

  • you sir are a fag

  • omg...thank you so much for opening my eyes and preventing me from kidding myself and appreciating an amazing squat since everyone knows how easy it is to squat 1000lbs with "anabolic enhancement"

  • this is, by far, the most impressive squat i've ever seen. just look at the depth and rom. hatfield's was extremely impressive but short. to those who think hatfield didn't use drugs at a time when their wasn't even testing, get a clue.

  • fuck off you weak ass dicklickers. Hatfield was not only eating Thai Tranny ass whilst training for his 1014, but he was also juiced, and has admitted it. Pole smokers

  • I'm a Hatfield fan to. If it's true Hatfield was able to squat 1014 clean then I wonder how much he would have lifted if you would have used drugs. Drugs could have made his squat easily 20% more. He would be somewhere near 1300.

  • If he used drugs, he would have squatted 1014. He had topped out close to the human capacity for lifting, and certainly topped out close to his own genetic limits.

  • I totally disagree with people who say Ed Coan is the black eye to the sport. Coan may have been caught, but so what? On his, and a much lower level, many if not most use, and have theirs ways of not getting caught. So Coan is not a cheater. He only did what his opponents did. Ed Coan is the greatest!

  • To me it's impossible that there's a person on this earth that has so much talent, that he is even better then the number two talent in the world, who uses performance.

  • "Dr Hatfield has never used drugs in his life, and was able to squat 1014 pounds.

    Explain?"

I've known, some even really good, world class lifters. All they had in common was that they used steroids. Also every drug test they were clean. Can you explain that?

  • Coan is a black eye to the sport of powerlifting. Coan was never star potential because Coan's been disgraced with his 4 times positive drug tests. Stupid, very stupid. Coan should've lifted in the non-drug tested only and left the lifters alone that were trying to compete drug free.

  • I guess many people forget that ed coan was the first powerlifter to total over 2400. Thats including before the super heavy weights. Which i would guess makes him a legend. And anybody who says different i guess is jealous of a real powerlifter.

  • Coan's a fuckin bad man, I've read parts of his book. Who knows about his drug tests but he was the godfather of modern powerlifting.

  • COme on. Coan's great but he was not th 1st to total over 2400. Kaz totaled 2425 in 1981, Doug Furnas totaled 2403 in 1987, Dave Passanella totaled 2408 in 1988 and 2458 in 1989, OD Wilson totaled 2430 in 1989 and

the late John Ware totaled 2427 in 1989. All came did it before coan did it for the first time in 1991. This is should be powerlifting history 101.

  • No one said he was the first guy to break 2400. However at the time he was the lightest guy.

  • Nope. Peacemaker said "I guess many people forget that ed coan was the first powerlifter to total over 2400. "

  • Sorry didn't go through the rest of the posts.

  • Ed is a legend, and the best

  • Ed is a fantastic athelete period. I have seen lifters taking amazing amounts of gear, and lifting no wear near what he does. Clean or not, powerlifting owes him a lot more than he owes powerlifting. We should all be thankful that a man like him was born.

  • Why does powerlifting owe him something? That cry from his cronies makes no sense. Coan owes powerlifting everything but all he does is backstab his peers. He's lucky lifters don't tell the truth about him more often. It's really a shame cause he could've been a poster boy for lifting but he had to go try to lift against the drug tested lifters. U have to admit he's still strong tho.

  • But Fanny those lifters didn't try and lift against drug tested lifters as Coan did when he was loaded on roids and amphetimines. A bloke below said he's a drug cheat. Gotta agree.

  • Well DICKEXTENDER, you may want to chose a different sport. You clearly can't follow powerlifting, or appreciate what someone like Ed Coan accomplished. Maybe the A-hole below can be your workout partner. I hear that Lady's Trim Spa has a special for couples...

  • Coan cheated against drug free lifters. He couldn't hang with the big dawgs in non-tested where he belonged. Coan is a badmouther of the top guys and a real prick.

  • There are much better lifters that are DRUG FREE. Ed Coan is DRUG CHEAT plain and simple. The USAPL barred him from competing after the IPF banned him for life. When it was announced that ED Coan would be barred everyone stood up and gave a STANDING OVATION. ED COAN IS A PARIAH.

  • Hmm... -6? Looks like the votes are in! Congratulations. You are an asshat.

  • it was 1991 in Dallas- he did a 959 squat, 898 deadlift & 545 bench- at 219!!! Broke the 2,400 mark.

  • All the pros have or are still using something. Regardless, this is pretty impressive.

  • There are no pros in powerlifting. You can't make a living just on the sport. Most of the top athletes are clean (at least in the IPF), and they are subject to random testing wherever they are.

  • TIGHT!!!

  • I agree with Shawnbellon. Coan comes from a small town in Illinois and he lifted with my powerlifting coach and when Coan was only 16 he was already deadlifting over 600 pounds and that was before he was juicing and he squated near 600 with no equipment all at a bodyweight under 180!

  • You guys are silly if you think just taking drugs produces a Coan. If that was true there would be many many more lifters like Coan. Although now equipment is so out of hand....

  • There is nothing that produces someone like Coan. He's a freak. Someone as small as him who outlifts EVERY lifter in EVERY weight class. Simply unbelievable!

  • Apart from Andy Bolton!

  • Karwaski was better at beating drug tests. Sorry but Coan was plain stupid.

  • Yeah 700 total your right i was confused with his other big meet. This was one of his best meets he squated 959 and deadlifted 901 all at a bodyweight of under 220.

  • it is 1003 lbs.

  • it is 1003 lbs.

  • Are you deaf, listen to the video, its 959!

  • I think this was at the 1991 USPF senior nationals. I don't think it was in the 80's. If it was the one on 1991 that was a 962 pound squat.

  • Who can call him best when he allways cheated on drugs, was caught as a habitual user and kicked out forever. He should of competed in the drug feds not the drug free feds.

  • nice niccccceeee niiiiiiiiccccccccceeeeeee nnnnnnnnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiicccccccccccccccceeeeee

  • how much was that?

  • This is an amazing movement, ED COAN is the greatest.

  • no spotter helped there, with his equipment and at his bodyweight noone comes close

  • except fred hatfield AKA Dr. Squat

  • they all take juice at some point in their career.

  • hes the best powerlifter ever

  • that was a super fast squat...ed has alot of power to move weight that fast...

  • PURE INCREDIBLE!!!

  • I don't like the spotters "helping" there!

  • No spotters means too much risks...

  • Indeed... The spotters didn't even touch it until he took his first step forward after squatting it... He definately performed the squat on his own... That's how things work at meets and training heavy.

  • ur an idiot

  • ED COAN! THE ALI OF POWERLIFTING! THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME! THE GOD OF POWER! nice.
