For a middle ground, I would suggest "Red Orchestra" and it's mod, "Darkest Hour." However, they aren't strictly tanking. Some maps are mainly infantry battles -sometimes with A tank for support, other maps are pure tank battles, and yet others are combined inf/armour. DH only has US/Brit tanks vs German, so no T-34. Neither game has a real single-player mode, and map rotation on most servers is by vote, so you'll want to be just as happy fighting afoot before you buy

@Shoukenlol It most certainly was not. It was significantly better than any of the tank that Germany invaded Russia with. And while it really couldnt ever go toe to toe with the German heavies, it could handle Pz4s without to much trouble, and those were by far the most common tank. Plus if you look at ease of manufacture, well, the 50k T34s is a testament to that. That one tank actually equals the amount of all German tank produced in the war. The Sherman is the same way.

the 3.7cm PaK guns also got phased out late '41 or something like , which was when the 7.5cm Pak40 was widely distributed. T-34 wouldve been slightly better if russian tank doctrine wasnt :TAKE STEEL -> BOLT GUN ON IT -> BOLT ENGINE ON IT -> DONE.
@Shoukenlol Whats abundantly clear to me is that you really dont know much about the T34. When the Germans invaded Russia, very few of their tanks had the ability to kill the T34. Many German tanks were equipped with a 37mm gun which couldnt kill a T34 at any range, The only guns that could Really give it to them, was the 50mm on some Pzr 3's and the 88. Also, the 76mm gun on the T34 could kill any of the early German tanks it faced at normal combat ranges (1000 - 1500 meters).
I concede though that at the beginning of the war that the Russians didnt really use their tanks effectively, which is one of the reasons they lost so many. But the T34 was not a shit tank, and is often regard as one of the best tanks of the war by historians. Also around 50000 T34's were produced during the war.
@TheHIV123 ah, wait. there was around 56k T-34s produced through the war, that includes all variants. around 19k of these were T-34-85s, widely considered being as a different model (85 =/= normal T34)
On the PanzerIII/IV topic, sure. the panzer4 was developed to support infantry in fights against hardened positions, something the panzer3 with its 5cm gun couldnt do. the low velocity gun on the PIV sure was bad against T-34s, ill give you that. That was changed with the PIVF2 variant however.

@darkedeath totally agreed - I've got 75% battles won playing German tech-tree and I'm quite happy, because German tanks have most accurate guns, so with camo-net, crew on 100% with 70% camo skill (my actual) and with best gun (now playing with Tiger armed with long 88) and best radio, you can achieve many kills by playing sniper tank, thus proceeding through game pretty quick

@YermavakPT Heh, with a heavy weight and ridicolously weak engine. A huge amount of them were abandoned before reaching into battle because of technical failures. T34/85 is still used in quite many armies.
Yeah I agree when going to face to face like in tank games on small maps Tiger would be winner.

Some times it is a bit hard to compare tanks from different nationalities, specially Ger vs Rus, mainly because they have very different concepts of how a tank should be. Where Ger valued armour, Rus valued speed. Different needs for different countries. I sometimes think what Ger would have made if they had a little more time and resources.
@YermavakPT This is not entirely true, the Tiger was actually a relatively fast tank, it could get up to 25mph on a good road. And the Russians certainly cared a lot about armor. the T34/85 was an up armored and up gunned version of the T34 and look at the IS 2 tank or the KV series. The Russians were very concerned about dealing with the German heavies. So that produced heavies of their own.
@YermavakPT One example I would point out the Tiger could penetrate the front glacis plate of a Soviet IS-2 between 100 and 300 m (0.062 and 0.19 mi). Where as the IS-2 could do the same between 500 and 1400 meters. (depending on the angle and all that)

@YermavakPT, im 17. And WoT has really ugly graphics.Models in WoT r low-poly and all tanks r almost square. Main guns have 5 or 6 polygons, what is not really good for 2011. So... They have some of the nicest looking detailed tanks in any game I've seen.. the models in THIS video are simpler by contrast. But again you're 17, so you probably don't know much to look for. The graphics for the tanks in WOT aren't the best in the world obviously but are never the less very detailed for the gameplay.

Are there any of the IS and ISU series tanks in this game, because I would feel more comfortable in one of these tanks against a tiger than a t34 85 and 76
oh, and you get stuck in terrain quicksand randomly and can't get out. And because you have no fine driving control, you can't reliably follow the correct strategy for WWII tank warfare, either in the attack or in the defensive, which involves moving from position to position to fire. That's way too technically complex for the game to handle and it shows. The T34-85s will sit there at 1000m and slug it out with a Tiger, round for round, and achieve excellent accuracy despite multiple hits.
2) Shell penetration is simply biased, and it's incredibly irritating. The 88mm APCBC on the Tiger I should be consistently blowing up any T-34-85 inside of 1000 in one or two solid hits. It doesn't. They shrug off hits to the turret and body like nothing. It takes usually 4-5 solid hits to the breadbox, sometimes half a dozen or more, to produce smoke. Ridiculous. That shell had a large post-penetration explosive filler and if it penetrated, the crew was toast. It gets very irritating in game.
Game would have been very fun if not for two things:
1) Driving sucks. Straight up button-mashing ridiculousness. Regardless of whether it's manual or autodriver, the tanks shift like the world's rawest recruit and jerk all over the place, periodically stalling, dropping all their speed, or stopping for no apparent reason. Fine position control is a pipe dream. So are quick retreats; your autodriver is disabled whenever a shell hits, so evidently your crew cannot process orders under fire.
wtf the t34 would is not able to beat the armour of the tiger. in fact, there are many reports of tank commanders ordered to run away in case they would have been faced with a tiger. in ww2, there was no allied tank able to beat the tiger. most of the tigers were useless because they ran out of supplies (mostly in africa) or the were destroyed by fighterbombers.
@MrCalifornia95 Mate the British 18lb antitank gun was capable of killing a tiger as was many other guns including the t34. The limiting thing was range. All the weapons the used to kill tigers had to be very close where as the tiger could stand off at range with its 88. In good hands the tiger was the king of the battle field. But it was very often (due to stupid commanding officers) used in town and then it was often killed by a guy with some plastic explosives or a petrol bomb.
Sorry but that's unrealistic. A Tiger would fuck minimum two of them.
A T-34 is more like a Panzer III but the german technology was everytime by far better than russian or american. But the hook is that the germans couldn't produce so much of these badass things. The russians has quite more Tanks, Soldiers, Weapons and everything than the germans. Good for us. And I say that as a german.
@jeebateeba56 Fighting in Urban and hilly / wooded areas would negate that advantage. The Tiger tanks were superb tanks, but the Tiger tanks were also heavy, got stuck, had mechanical breakdowns, etc. That is all part of the larger equation when fighting a war of that scale.

@Dimdim316 Lets be clear about something, the Sherman was not a shit tank by any means. Lets compare, It was better than the Pzr 3 that it mostly faced early in the war, and it was on equal terms with the Pzr 4, which it most commonly faced, especially once it had the 76mm gun. Also, It was found to be on equal footing in the Korean war with the T34/85 in that they could both kill each other at normal combat ranges. But the Sherman usually bested the Koreans on account of superior training.

@darkedeath totally agreed - I've got 75% battles won playing German tech-tree and I'm quite happy, because German tanks have most accurate guns, so with camo-net, crew on 100% with 70% camo skill (my actual) and with best gun (now playing with Tiger armed with long 88) and best radio, you can achieve many kills by playing sniper tank, thus proceeding through game pretty quick

@YermavakPT Heh, with a heavy weight and ridicolously weak engine. A huge amount of them were abandoned before reaching into battle because of technical failures. T34/85 is still used in quite many armies.
Yeah I agree when going to face to face like in tank games on small maps Tiger would be winner.

Some times it is a bit hard to compare tanks from different nationalities, specially Ger vs Rus, mainly because they have very different concepts of how a tank should be. Where Ger valued armour, Rus valued speed. Different needs for different countries. I sometimes think what Ger would have made if they had a little more time and resources.

@YermavakPT This is not entirely true, the Tiger was actually a relatively fast tank, it could get up to 25mph on a good road. And the Russians certainly cared a lot about armor. the T34/85 was an up armored and up gunned version of the T34 and look at the IS 2 tank or the KV series. The Russians were very concerned about dealing with the German heavies. So that produced heavies of their own.

@YermavakPT One example I would point out the Tiger could penetrate the front glacis plate of a Soviet IS-2 between 100 and 300 m (0.062 and 0.19 mi). Where as the IS-2 could do the same between 500 and 1400 meters. (depending on the angle and all that)

@YermavakPT, im 17. And WoT has really ugly graphics.Models in WoT r low-poly and all tanks r almost square. Main guns have 5 or 6 polygons, what is not really good for 2011. So... U know, i'm not saying that WoT is just a piece of shit, in fact i love it. The only thing i'm trying to tell u is not to compare these two games. That's it.

They have some of the nicest looking detailed tanks in any game I've seen.. the models in THIS video are simpler by contrast. But again you're 17, so you probably don't know much to look for. The graphics for the tanks in WOT aren't the best in the world obviously but are never the less very detailed for the gameplay.

I agree with Kazhan89. Israel has made Hitler into the anti-Christ and he's not. He was a 20th Century despot who won WWII in 1940 and then proceeded to lose in 5 years later. The 20th Century produced too many villians to count. oh, and you get stuck in terrain quicksand randomly and can't get out. And because you have no fine driving control, you can't reliably follow the correct strategy for WWII tank warfare, either in the attack or in the defensive, which involves moving from position to position to fire. That's way too technically complex for the game to handle and it shows. The T34-85s will sit there at 1000m and slug it out with a Tiger, round for round, and achieve excellent accuracy despite multiple hits.

2) Shell penetration is simply biased, and it's incredibly irritating. The 88mm APCBC on the Tiger I should be consistently blowing up any T-34-85 inside of 1000 in one or two solid hits. It doesn't. They shrug off hits to the turret and body like nothing. It takes usually 4-5 solid hits to the breadbox, sometimes half a dozen or more, to produce smoke. Ridiculous. That shell had a large post-penetration explosive filler and if it penetrated, the crew was toast. It gets very irritating in game.

Game would have been very fun if not for two things:
1) Driving sucks. Straight up button-mashing ridiculousness. Regardless of whether it's manual or autodriver, the tanks shift like the world's rawest recruit and jerk all over the place, periodically stalling, dropping all their speed, or stopping for no apparent reason. Fine position control is a pipe dream. So are quick retreats; your autodriver is disabled whenever a shell hits, so evidently your crew cannot process orders under fire.

wtf the t34 would is not able to beat the armour of the tiger. in fact, there are many reports of tank commanders ordered to run away in case they would have been faced with a tiger. in ww2, there was no allied tank able to beat the tiger. most of the tigers were useless because they ran out of supplies (mostly in africa) or the were destroyed by fighterbombers.

@MrCalifornia95 Mate the British 18lb antitank gun was capable of killing a tiger as was many other guns including the t34. The limiting thing was range. All the weapons the used to kill tigers had to be very close where as the tiger could stand off at range with its 88. In good hands the tiger was the king of the battle field. But it was very often (due to stupid commanding officers) used in town and then it was often killed by a guy with some plastic explosives or a petrol bomb.

Sorry but that's unrealistic. A Tiger would fuck minimum two of them.
A T-34 is more like a Panzer III but the german technology was everytime by far better than russian or american. But the hook is that the germans couldn't produce so much of these badass things. The russians has quite more Tanks, Soldiers, Weapons and everything than the germans. Good for us. And I say that as a german.

@jeebateeba56 Fighting in Urban and hilly / wooded areas would negate that advantage. The Tiger tanks were superb tanks, but the Tiger tanks were also heavy, got stuck, had mechanical breakdowns, etc. That is all part of the larger equation when fighting a war of that scale.

@DrockGaffney89 True that. But there were 1,839 Tiger Is and Tiger IIs produced in WW2 vs 57,000 T-34s. That's 31 T-34s to 1 Tiger tank. There were not enough of them to overcome the vast numbers of Soviet armor.

The last election results are pretty evident of that. I'll agree that German citizens would have been in a world of hurt if they had tried to question what the Nazis were doing but you won't be able to convince me that they weren't aware of what was happening to the Jews.

@jordeton8or its also important the the Waffen SS (they were the military wing of the SS, an elite fighting force) are recognized as not being Aliggme and Einsatzgruppen wings of the SS, who were responsible for the killing of jews, slavs e.t.c., however the Totenkampf (may have misspelt that) and SS Adolf Hitler Divisions where involved in executions however they were originally Aliggme SS then folded into the Waffen SS, my Uncle was in labour camp too, have German relatives who fought too
