If people are going to argue who they believe was the better singer - you miss the point of what Petra is about. Both were outstanding vocalists, and both used their gifts of singing well for the building and development of God's Kingdom - to tell people about Jesus, to glorify and worship Him. Thank you John, and thank you Greg X for telling me about Jesus! :)
@wpcooper1978 Hey Coop, It's just friendly chatter. As a musician I listen to all kinds of music for many reasons. I listen to Christian music for it's uplifting message but lets face it, there are levels and degrees of talents & capabilities. It cant be all about the lyrics because I know of many Christian bands with great lyrics but the music is horrible and never make it. Even Christian bands need a following for success. If the music stinks regardless of lyrics, they keep their day jobs.
@CrappyApple001True ... I am a musician myself and find the majority of Christian music, including the contemporay worship music, horrible and dated. In my opinion, Petra tried to deliver music of great quality during their careers with both singers - in some ways some of their best albums sound dated in the years the were released, but they still delivered good records. Mind you - I only own albums from Washes Whiter Than to This Means War - I have only heard a sprinkling of later tunes.
My point is, Petra tried to deliver high quality music, and for the most part, they did. Although I found Back to the Street a horrible album - only "Fools Gold" was the stand out, and that says something! Over and above, both singers used their gifts well.
Hey, C-apple. Sorry about the misunderstanding, this isn't an argument at all. I see your perspective and I appreciate it. All I am saying is that there is a reason why certain singers are more popular and resonate with people than others. Much of the time it comes down to pure talent, of which I, and most (I believe) other fans would agree that Volz has over JS. People have there opinions. In the end, its about God and his message that supercedes any petty debate. God Bless CA..
My reference was about style not ability. Imagine Steve Perry singing something from Skid Row... it just wouldn't work. John's voice took the band in another direction because it worked better for that particular style.
Also I didnt realize I was creating an argument.... simply an observation and giving an opinion. I prefer the "heavier" style that John's voice afforded them.
Which is why I preferred John's solo stuff over Greg's.
Trying to debate whether or not JS is Volz's equal is like trying to debate that Arnel Pineda (new Journey singer) is Steve Perry's equal. Neither JS, not AP are in their predecessor's league. Let us not foget however, that ultimately, it is God's message that is most important. From this view point, this argument is simply irrelevant.
If this concert was 1986 or later then yes it is John. If it's 1985 or before, it's Greg. Although, I think that Greg was still doing some studio work on some projects in 1986, and probably on tour in the early part of the year. And I believe that Greg does a better job with this song than John. But then again John did have a higher pitched voice than Greg. Listen to This Means War for sure, but I think that John started with the band during Back to the Street.
I love this song so much i just don't have words. I used to just weep every time i heard it. So nice to hear this stuff i grew up with again! I think i learned more scripture from Petra when i was in Junior High than i did in church! No, i know ii did :) Thank you God for talented musicians!!
I have a friend who for him Petra will always be Lowry, Slick, Hartman, Weaver and Volz. But for me Petra will always be Hartman, Weaver, Lowry, Cate and Schlitt.
It will be different for many because of how long Petra was around. However, like you, I enjoyed them best when the lineup was Schlitt, Hartman, Weaver, Lowry, and Cates, not because that was the era when they received the most accolades, but because I felt they were at their best lyrically and musically.
Volz had much more vocal ability than JS. Volz had te range and similar voice to Steve Perry, would you then say that Perry had less of a "Rock and Roll" voice than JS? JS has a rough, scratchy voice, and is no where near in Volz's league vocally. To compare JS to Volz vocally does a real disservice to Volz.

@ba0315 I have to respectfully disagree. My point is this ... imagine Steve Perry singing Skid Row or Sebastian Bach singing Journey. Both are great singers but neither could thrive in the others band. It's just two different styles. Volz had sensational range, but John had that gritty voice. to me it's a matter of preference. Oddly though my two favorite songs by Petra are It Is Finished and Addonai. I prefer Gregs vocals in Gregs tunes but I prefer Johns in his respective songs by Petra.
Right, it is a matter of preference. I beg to differ that Sebastian Bach is a great singer. I don't put him in Perry's league at all, and I bet most others wouldn't either. I consider Bach just another "screamer." ELVIS was a great singer and could have pulled it off in his prime. Elvis could go from "Jailhouse Rock" to "Amazing Grace" with no "forced" effort at all. Bach could't do this, but Perry could I believe. Check out "Mother, Father" (Live) by Journey with Perry from 1981.
@ba0315 Your kinda missing my point here. =o) It's not a matter of who is in who's league, it's what works with what style. Lane Staley was PERFECT for AIC and that style, Steve Perry was perfect for Journey, Rob Halford was perfect for Priest. Petra altered their style to do what was best for John's voice. To be a successful band, you need to cater to your singers strengths and style tendencies or your just another band. I think Petra did a superb job at doing that with John. Cheers!
It's not a reunion, but John Schlitt and Bob Hartman tour together under the moniker 2 Guys From Petra as public speakers while doing acoustic versions of Petra songs.

@PoeticTwist Greg released the album "The River is Rising" directly after he left Petra. His last studio album with Petra was "Beat the System"

@saq428 Beat the System tour was his last set of concerts. I do believe he was in on the editing of the album of Captured in Time and Space.
