Better than the original! When I am just chillin, this is what's playing, along with Michael Franks. Robert Palmer was a great talent and will be sorely missed.
This man truly captured the essence of both these songs. I play these more than the originals! Just found out my man passed. I love his music, and I have been enjoying it for over 20 yrs. He did the dam thang!
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!

You've gotta love the late Robert Palmer. How did this pale faced lad from Yorkshire aquire such cool and soul...I used to love watching him peform; slightly awkward but fully commited. A sad loss at just 54
@rembrandtjr58 "BLASTFORMY"???????I looked that word up in the dictionary and it doesn't exist. Is it an English word or perhaps Croatian, Hungarian, etc.?
Way better than the Michael Mcdonald's covers, and this is from an avid fan of that man. Robert's voice is just fantastic in this. Love the quick transition to I want you.
Anyway, that's a great memory I have of Robert. Not to mention of course his many great songs that I love to this day. My heart still aches that he died before his time. His days of topping the charts were likely over, but it would have been great to be able to catch another show of his even to this day. I guess the best tribute someone can receive is to be missed...RP, you are missed.
I saw Robert Palmer perform in Orlando back in '97 I believe. It was July, and it was a blistering hot afternoon. He did a show outside at Downtown Disney, in his suit. I got there early so I could be close, and I was. He was fantastic, and he made me laugh when the heat began to get the best of him and he made a comment that only few could hear. He said something about "I wish I'd known it was going to be so bloody hot." He was pulling his shirt collar to try to let some air in.
@KiranaForever you'll tell mr.Palmer himself how to sing this song...i'm sorry but who are you? Marvin Gaye probably? no? than STFU and enjoy or not depends...and lets drop this melancholy shit, i bet nobody wouldn't even have said anything if for example Barry White sampled this song...:|
Marvin was a gift from God and Robert worried about this recording for a long time - was it adding anything or doing the man justice. I think that in the end he (Rob) was just happy to keep Marvin alive through his release of the cover. Ironically it worked for me... I tracked back and bouhgt 4 marvins albums on the back of this recording... Love Roberts versions though alos - bravo!
I love the mix of these two awesome songs!! Anytime I hear it, I just start dancing no matter where I'm at.....it is too bad that we had to lose both artists too soon!!!!
I`m a lady and I just wanted to say seems to me its the guys that have the most passion and creative soul or we would`nt be able to listen to such beautiiful words and sung with so much depth of feeling
Thanks for this addition. Mr. Palmer in an interview said he wanted to bring something new to Mr. Gaye's songs, a man who was one of his favorites. He did!
What a wonderful time! White, Black? It does not matter! Music above all! What a feeling and what a history and what a tribute! Thank you misters Marvin Gaye and Robert Palmer.
The politically correct will not kill you. FOR EVER.
Marvin Gaye would be proud of this incredibly well done version of two of his greatest hits...arrangements took tears from my eyes...great work, Mr. Palmer!! An ageless classic...
That first song "Mercy Mercy Me" is a terrific cover & couldn't be more timely with all that's going on in the world right now. Nuclear meltdown in Japan, Overfishing, Oil Spill in the Gulf, Mercury & other toxins in the environment...The list goes on & on. Sure hope we can salvage what's left of this planet before it's too late.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is what Hitler has to listen to in Hell for all eternity. The segue between 'Mercy, Mercy Me' and 'I Want You' is where his bell-end grows back on his cock before it gets burnt off for another millenium - AKA 4.57 mins.
@rnbthug100 "This is a great version of mercy me and I want you make no mistake and I'm a big Marvin fan." - I know, man! His voice sounds, shit, almost like his! I loved it, his version. That's how I discovered "I Want You" by Marvin Gaye.
I don't who sung the song first. I love this version. I can help but think about all the good music we missed out on from both Marvin and Robert. They both died way too soon.

@lancecolley You need to watch Marvin Gaye's singing of the national anthem at the 1983 NBA All-star game. He's the only singer to totally make the anthem his. Although I think that Robert Palmer is a great singer, Marvin Gaye mesmerized.
Robert Palmer's Arsenio Hall show live version is by far the best, this is great too...maybe if Chris Blackwell can get on the nominating committee for the RnR Hall of Fame we might see him get at least nominated as a performer... after awhile he'll have to be under early influences... he was eligible in 1999...one can only hope.

@lancecolley Marvin could find notes Mr. Palmer could only dream of. He is using Gaye's arrangement, and even Marvin's vocal inflections. There is a video of Marvin rehearsing "I Want You" lying on a sofa and directing the band. It is flawless, nobody but Marvin could do that. My favourite Marvin Gaye cover but more for 'I want you'.Don't know which I prefer... The original is more sexy and sensual, whereas this one is more upbeat and good for dancing to.
Why don't you all give up this black/cover/dude shit. Great song, brilliant both times, if Take That had covered it we might have a reason to be cross. Let's all love great music by all brilliant artists. Yeah
@hospitalbedpan A black person did sing this. Marvin Gaye sang both of these songs, and Robert Palmer covered them both. He did an excellent job in this cover. One of the best covers I've ever heard. I'm so glad my work plays this song :)
wow, never knew Robert Palmer sang this. I always thought it was some black dude :-)
LOL I'll never look at this song the same way again. Odd..... almost wish I didn't find out the truth. Kinda like me overhearing my drunk mother say my conception was a mistake of sexual desperation.

Robert Palmer died way too soon. Heaven has him and earth will always miss him.

Why don't you all give up this black/cover/dude shit. Great song, brilliant both times, if Take That had covered it we might have a reason to be cross. Let's all love great music by all brilliant artists. Yeah

Marvin Gayes vocals are so much better.
enough said.
AVsfinest15 11 months ago
@AVsfinest15 given that gaye sang it at 31 and palmer at 42. palmer does it that best as you get older your vocals start to get deeper and shite.

@hospitalbedpan1 Guess your comment is an excellent example of the expression "ignorance is bliss" ("some black dude") - ..... sheesh!

Mercy was the second single from Marvin Gaye's 1971 album, What's Going On. The song was written solely by Marvin Gaye.

Robert Palmer was a huge talent, there is no substitute for a remarkable voice, music mourns his passing.
