  • Evans EC2 Heads???? i just bought these haha never realised there what you have :P what you got for reso heads? cause it sounds mint =)

  • how in the hell do i get my foot to move out of beat with my right hand?

  • play for longer than a month, you'll get it... It'll just happen one day and you'll get a huge boner, just wait.

  • super HD xD^^

    great lesson!

  • Van your videos look and sound great. Couple you go over what you use to record both video and sound? I would love to know what you use - from the mics to the end and what effects you might use - compression, gating, equalization (each head?) etc.

  • Van love your stuff. Curious though. Aren't those heads due for a change? Given the dents I wonder how many plies you use and how thick. Maybe they should be a bit more substantial?

  • I have a new set I am going to put on before recording my next DVD. These are really old but don't sound that bad so I have been holding out on changing them.

  • I hope this helps some new drummers:

Im a metal head and a huge extreme drumming fan, for the entire first year of starting drumming i concentrated on playing fast, till i stopped and thought i should pay some attention to different rudiments as well rather than just seeing how fast i can play single strokes with both my hands and feet.

concentrating on those alone, on slow tempo (to get them right), i noticed that my speed in general was improving at an alarming rate. (a good alarm :)

  • "slow" ( if we can say that ^^ ) or fast, you"re really an exceptional drummer and also teacher !! thx

  • Its always been known that playing slower is harder for the simple fact that the mind has to think when playing slow, but not as much when playing fast.

  • i think that's some of the best drumming i've seen you do.

as a drummer, that's what i'm aiming for, but i don't have the chops

  • I wish my fastest playing was up to the speed of your slowest.

  • Lol at 3:31-3:34!

  • Fuuuuuuccccckkkk. I'm not one for playin fast anyways, but jesus that last little run was fuckin incredible! Gave me shivers man! Such feeling in it!

  • Hey Randy...could you possibly re-upload that video you once had up that was called something like, "Messing around on the Roland kit at 2 am." That video was sooooo bad ass. Why did you take it down?

  • what kind of batter heads are on your toms?

  • Evans EC-2 coated

  • Van,

I noticed one thing plays a vital role in your demo is dynamics. Your play sounds so groovy because of the use of dynamics. It'll be good if you can do a (or more) vids on this topic.

  • Done... my next lesson will be about Dynamics. RVP

  • Is this slow? Ahahahaha

Good! The better way to play.

And is not that way. I Play metal but I'm not that obsessed to play fast. Depending what the song requires, something like tempo or the style of the song. If it's something more extreme, progressive, jazzy or slowly. Different kind of stuff. But when jamming, I prefer to play like this, not that speedy thing.

  • well van the man please get your 4th tom head changed its so bad looking .thanks for your videos. woint to meet up with you some time i aam in the usa, good luck from ritchie d,

  • I have a whole new set that I am awaiting to put on for my next DVD. RVP

  • do you wear ear plugs?

  • Yes, you didn't see me taking them out and in?

  • this is the first time I noticed them.

  • slow it down, and make it softer, few words my friend needs lmfao, he always comes in my room, and is like hey dude, can i play, and im like sure, and then he trys to do 16ths on the base right a way to do metal stuff, and i always have to tell him, slow down, and stop hitting the damn pedals so hard, before you break em, then he just continues to play harder, i lol at him cuz i know he'll never get it.

  • I know the feeling lol. In band and in jazz band at my school we have 2 "real" drummers. Me and this girl. She is a little crazy and it shows when she plays lol. In jazz we have this song where she has a solo, it like all smooth then BLAMMMY.

  • don't get me wrong, i like to play 16ths plus on the double bass, but not as crazy as my friend lol, he's saying he's gonna buy himself a set, and im awaiting the time when he does, so i can laugh when he breaks it so fast...

  • im curious, how will your friend "break" his set? i play 16ths on the double bass all the time... even before i got my DW's, my TKO beginner drums held up just fine.

  • break his bass i mean, and he'll break it because he hits it so hard... he doesn't know how to hit the bass smoothly since he uses his feet upward you know, like he doesn't put his feet down on the ground he does it where his heels are up. and he hits it harder and harder, the more he messes up the harder he hits it.

  • that just means he plays heel-up.... but if he's hitting extremely hard he could put a hole in his bass drum batter head, if there isn't a pad protecting it.

  • that's what i mean when i say "break his set" lol.

  • I know exactly what you mean, some beginners try to use their whole leg instead of just the foot.. a good way to train them out of this is to remove the rug from under the kick - they'll have to get it right to keep the kit from sliding away on them.. lol Thing is, a drum kit isn't a jungle-gym, it's a musical instrument. Learning to play quiet is as important as learning to slow down the root groove to make room for finesse. Loud drowns out more than half the sounds a kit can make.

  • yeah he always has to keep moving the left bass drum pedal foward because he pushes it back, its funny to watch him try but he can never get anything.

  • @tunedafish not enough emphasis is placed upon "dynamic playing" for fill, grooves and solos. You are so right!

  • dead on, I play Heel-up, and My Kick's head is almost swiss cheese.

  • 3:45-3:48 VERY FUNNY!

  • Man, that kit just sounds so good. I could just sit behind that thing and play it until I die of starvation. Well, ok... maybe not, but still, it's very flippin' nice !!

  • The problem I have is when I am actually doing the solo, it sounds clear to me. But when I hear or see the playback, it sounded rushed. Now, I've been playing for 26 years and I never quite got over this. Did you ever have that problem?

  • All the time. You just have to focus on allowing the fills or groove to breath. RVP

  • I love you man ...sniff.

That is some serious sh*t you're doing, I have the same type of playing style as this, slow and (hopefully) meaningful. Great job and thanks for all of the posts.

    Awesome

  • man that was sweet!!!!

  • Nice vid man:) Your drumming speaks for itself!

It would thrill me, if you would make some stuff about patterndrumming!! (I am a huge fan of Danny Carey ...)

    Thanks from DK

  • That was Sick man!

  • Sounds to fast for me! I'm still trying...

  • AWESOMEEEEEE !

  • holy.... sweee....ttt....... >_>

  • I remember as a kid, I went to take a drum lesson and the teacher asked me to play something. I launched into something similar to 3:41 and he was like . . . okay . . . :D

  • I've been trying to explain this to my Slayer-Freak guitarist friend for twenty years.

  • if you are a heavy metal lover, you cannot understand this.... metal is about METAL.

  • try and take in other types of music and add to it, it can be helpful

  • i was trying to say that metal is about velocity...fast fills, fast moves....just that...you cannot change the mentality of a metal fan, you cannot say to him, slow down buddy... because is metal... just that...

  • doom metal?

  • Metal drumming doesnt have much range.

    At all.

  • range of what? i think all the styles of metal has a lot of technic on drums, i have to say: mike portnoy has a technic and speed that is incredible.. Nicko McBrain from maiden, has a lot of technic on the pedal...

i think metal is plenty of drummers that are amazing...just that.

  • Well portnoy is in a more progressive band that allows him to be creative.

I'm just saying that metal (heavy, death, thrash) is a genre that needs to have specific sounds to be classified as metal, that includes the drums. It doesnt leave much room for variation in terms of groove.

  • well, if the topic is "groove" i totally accept what you're saying.

  • Listen to periphery or animals as leaders, then say that again.

  • I spent the first 20 years drumming heavy and as fast as I can. It takes years to mature as a drummer. I am still trying. Ha Ha. RVP

  • omg i love your groove !!! so awesome !

    the best video i think..

  • Very good lesson! Some of the best drummers aren't the fastest or the flashiest. Jeff Porcaro comes to mind. He was one of the best at laying down a nice, slow, solid groove, which allowed the song to breathe. BTW, your drums sound awesome!

  • this is always what my drum teacher told me, keep it slow if you want to practise!

  • music is about the sound not about speed... great video randy , keep on drumming

  • @drumxmurb Dude his name is Rob lol...

  • Lol some of your slow stuff was a little quick. Those are coated EC2s right?

  • Nice one another great video!

  • hey i got that shirt haha XD

  • i completely agree with you man. I hate drummers who think just because they are fast and repetitive that they are better than anyone else

  • hi! i wish that you can help me to learn how to play a drum solo it was from eric carr the song is carr jum 81 it came in revenge album KISS

  • hell yeah randy i got that shirt too!! got it at ken stanton. its a zildgian tee.

  • playing drums is about getting the best sound out of a beat, and rushing through it only makes life harder for you and doesnt by any means make the beat sound better.

  • Great video, again thanks Randy, that's what I teach my very young students, slow it down, make it groove, control your energy, hold it back, explore dynamics and how something could sound at different speeds.

  • I don't know where the obsession with playing fast comes from, it is like they think, look I can play faster than you, therefore I am better than you. They are so wrong.
