i was gonna try this, said F*** it. Cut the antenna off, soldered 2 chunks of wire back on, wrapped one around the other, extended it about a foot, and now i can pick up internet from a block away.

I CAN EXPLAIN THE GAIN ON THE HOMEBREWED ANTENNA REFLECTOR. THE BASE OF THE ANTENNA HAS A MAGNET. IT ACTS LIKE A CAPACITOR THAT HELPS TUNING. TRY THE WIND SURFER ON THE CAN. IT'S CALLED A GROUND PLANE. GREAT WORK. I'VE ACTUALLY GOTTEN A 3 BAR SIGNAL ON MY PHONE WHERE THERE WAS NO SIGNAL BEFORE. ON THE ROOF OF MY CAR, WITH AN ALUMINUM ROAST PAN AND MY LAPTOP, I USED 7 SIGNALS THAT I COULD ONLY DETECT BEFORE. 11 MORE HAD WEP CODES. WITHOUT THE PAN I COULD ONLY DETECT 12 LANS. TRY THE CANTENNA.

Your home made antenna should work better then the wind surfer because its bigger and you have a metal can hooked on to it so it should give you a better signal. But if your were suppose to put the antenna on top of the home made antenna you should have full bars.... you should try the home made antenna and the wind surfer together to see if you get an even better signal.

Interestingly enough I have one also that unscrews from the base (longer)

I use a metal collinder (for draining vegetables!!) unscrew the base ..insert it through the middle hole and screw back the ariel part to the base sticking through the hole. Works wonders pointed in the right direction...can test it at different holes on the collinder too!

Dale, you've made a good video. You can attain the same signal strength with the Windsurfer if you use the same amount of reflector area...same as your rig. The larger the capture area, the better the signal strength. Also, placing the antenna on a metal can will make a better ground plane antenna. You will not get the same reading if you use your rig with those plastic CD cases. I'm glad you came up with the metal can. You have accomplished a job well done!!!

That's pretty good. You could also be getting a reflection from somewhere off-beam , always a problem indoors. For my laptop: wifi and 3G, I made a corner reflector - foil on A4 card, folded to 45 degrees, antenna placed about 1 inch or less from the apex. It sends most signals over the 5 bar limit, from almost zero, and folds flat for travelling.

The base of the atenna might be looking for a ground plane (the can) that would be the difference. The distance from thew antenna to the reflecter is important it should be 1/2 wave length I guess at 2 gig.

You did it all wrong mate. The reflector has to be a parabola otherwise it doesn't focus the RF signal on one line (on the antenna). You would get much better results with a proper parabola. Also, the bigger the better.

1.get Glu stick,paper,foil,a pen,and some small string

2.take the glue stick & put all over paper

3.smush the foil that is bigger than your piece of paper onto your paper

(make as smooth as possible)

4.poke a hole the size of your pen in the center and 2 smaller holes on the sides.

5.tie the string to both sides, tight enough for the foiled paper to band like a half-pipe

6.Put it on the antenna and point to router until u get sweet spot
