good point oslex. the reason why global oil prices dropped was due to the fact UAE and Saudi Arabia realised their economies are based strictly off oil exports, so they increase production to defer the US and Europe from going into renewable engeries. I come from a country that should have been building up finacial services in preparation for the future. Many people chose to flex their money instead. When the party was ended it was a disaster. No one is saying the Dubai government is evil but it is short-sighted. They're doing exactly the same thing the US did which is now causing massive financial problems; they had a huge income from oil which they shifted to housing and financial services industries, both of which are currently experiencing a massive bubble.
That bubble will burst sooner or later (given current economic climate, I'd say sooner) and all those houses will be worthless. Dubai should save a bit of cash for the future.

Dubai's main business has been trading and services to the other parts of the region and the world. It could be the only gulf city that developed from sheer business planning. For your information, Dubai doesnt sell oil. It imports most of its oil and pertoleum from neighbouring city Abu Dhabi (capital of UAE). I had lived in dubai for 8 yrs now and have seen the city grow wonders overnight. And there will be lots more to come, than a few towers. So keep your ignorant jealousy to yourself.

good point oslex. the reason why global oil prices dropped was due to the fact UAE and Saudi Arabia realised their economies are based strictly off oil exports, so they increase production to defer the US and Europe from going into renewable engeries. Just wait when renewable energy become so accessable and big oil needs a bailout, and our government socializes their loss to the tax payer.

It's all well and good to build up finacial services for the future but some of the projects just don't make sense. I come from a country that should have been building up finacial services in preparation for the future. Many people chose to flex their money instead. When the party was ended it was a disaster. You can't deny that the buildings are from oil wealth and I won't deny there's business being done there. We will only know what's up when the tall buildings are left vacant.

No one is saying the Dubai government is evil but it is short-sighted. They're doing exactly the same thing the US did which is now causing massive financial problems; they had a huge income from oil which they shifted to housing and financial services industries, both of which are currently experiencing a massive bubble.
That bubble will burst sooner or later (given current economic climate, I'd say sooner) and all those houses will be worthless. Dubai should save a bit of cash for the future.

I'm afraid this is not true for UAE, because they don't lend money to finance their project. They simply have so redicilous much money they don't know what to do with it. The financial bubble in the western world is tied to bad morgages, and if you don't have any morgage you can't have bad morgages and thus no financial crisis.
