My 1st 40gb PS3 died from this, you can try to fix it if the warranty is out.
My 2nd (slim) bricked but its not dead, it only need a new HDD or a special fix. New PS3s are $250 and Sony charges around $150 and you have to wait like 2 weeks. Sony aren't very good with networking and hardwares such as PS3, sometimes im thinking that PS3s and updates are rigged to fuck up and Sony makes money out of it.
Fan tests only work for certain models. I know mine was one of the original 60gb PS3s and fan test didn't work for that. If you can't do a fan test have fun cracking the thing open and getting the disk out yourself :P
