  • don't walk away

  • I love a party with a happy atmosphere

  • It's always the way, real legends die too young rip Ian Curtis

  • it's sad ian didnt even had chance to see this video....

  • :) R.I.P Ian Cutis.

Ian Curtis and Sid Vicious....Both died to young.. ;(

  • @lilithbatcat1 true say, both amazing people :(

  • fantastic song, great music. Have not heard this for years.

  • R.I.P Ian Curtis @-`-,---

  • 30 yrs Today since the passing of one the greatest singers/poet of our time.

RIP IAN CURTIS you are truly missed and your voice plays out in all of our hearts.

  • beautiful song...

  • RIP Ian & thank you for all these emotional songs

  • probably the best song ever.

  • Por que magnificais tamañas mierdas?

  • Perdón, pero la única mierda que hay aquí eres tú y nadie te ha magnificado.

Demuestras tener una gran cultura musical, si señor.

  • Buenísima.

  • what is this song about?

  • Seriousjarppa, it's generally believed to be primarily about Ian's severe epilepsy and depression.

  • When someone very dear to you dies(hope now), what you will like to sing to him

  • @harthandsoul this song all-ways reminds me of my little brother Richard Losinger who committed suicide on 2004

  • Great song and an equally epic video. You just can't do this now... no shaking booties... no bling.

  • Supremo.

  • Just seems some people where never going to be allowed to expresss themselves without feeling they had failed...

Given 10 years on with the huge changes in culture..

    Ian may have survived..

That is something we will never know..

If things had been different, Jamie may have survived..

Also something I will never know....

  • no way to know what would have happened... because that's everything. we only know what happens, and what we start and stop!

  • me being a singer in a band, I often (or more than often) write depressing lyrics, even though I might be the happiest person alive. That's because I enjoy telling stories, as do most lyricist, even If they like to say that theres a true story behind it. Ian Curtis's lyrics were deeply depressing and actually delt with his emotional issues, but I think his bandmates thought it was just amazing stories he was telling. I know I would have thought so...

  • lyricisms

  • this and baba o'riley and there's a light that never goes out are the best songs ever. the emotion is just crazy!

  • i dont get it,,wheres russ abbot?

  • i personally think that folks should get over their obsession with ian curtis. he was an artist. he killed himself and it was sad. lets all get over it and enjoy joy division.

  • It is quite difficult, no to say impossible, but still difficult, to enjoy any music without knowing the context it was written in. Be it Beethoven, Vagner or Ian Curtis or Britney Spears,

  • agreed same with kurt cobane. the music will always sound the same weather or not the writer is dead

  • Ian was the type of sensitive guy whom nobody really understands, even because he was too shy to clearly express his feelings. It was only after his suicide that people could actually understand his feelings, and how much he suffered.

Of course the band members were very stupid not to understand how utterly despaired the guy was feeling when he wrote such songs, but this is no surprise, most people in rock bands are utterly devoid of the sensitivity required to understand a person like Ian.

  • I suppose he was not able to say ''Fuck off!'' to anyone.

  • Manchester so grim in the 70s 80s

  • i hear he's dead now

  • @PenguinBoy92 was it swine flu?

  • A for the the band having no empathy towards Ian's later song writting.

To be fair to the rest of them, even if Ian turned up with Atmosphere as a new song and you hadn't read the lyrics before. You may look at it as someone needs to talk with Ian and he needs a serious mental evaluation, OR genius at work. There is afterall a fine line between eccentricity and pure genius. I think Ian was the perfect blend of both. But it is sad to think how it all ended for him.

  • @ed1ss

The rest of the band have said they were just a group of lads from Manchester. They didn't really pay attention to what he was saying in his lyrics. Plus, they didn't really know how to handle stuff like that.

  • They were all caught up in the scene.

  • The initial shot must be something to do with racial harmony due to the colour scheme and the KKK style outfit. Not sure about the rest, maybe something to do with cults/religous movements?

  • Best lyrics ever written down in any song by any person, ever.

Not too sure about the melody, however I think that was the point to this song in the first place, to have little melody.

Phenomenal peice of music, hope Ian's got the tunes sorted in heaven for when we all arrive...

  • I love this tune but does anyone else think the video looks like the demonic video in the film the ring.

  • Hey, can anyone tell me what`s the idea behind this video? I`ve been thinkin` bout it recently and need to hear your opinions too! ;)

  • i can't get it too but ZOMG the song is amazing!

  • @Gigsixstring The song is ian's take on how he felt about his manic depression (Bi-Polar) in 2days terms....How ppl feel trapped and alone when they are in their depressed state...Also i don't actually think this is a genuine JD video as they only done live versions on camera.. :0)

  • I just don't understand the band members, if anyone I knew wrote song lyrics like this, I would immediately sit him down and talk it out, hopefully get him some help. It's beautiful, but it makes me a little mad every time I hear it. It never had to go down that way.

  • @penanceangel i dont think it would be that easy, i mean look at morrisey's lyrics

  • Unbelievably ,the rest of the band didnt know or want to know what the lyrics were about. I find this very difficult to understand and their lack of empathy. How do they live with consciences? The man was solid genius.

  • Tony Wilson said that Ians girlfriend Evette came to him and spoke about the lyrics of this and new dawn fades but he just brushed her off and put it down to artistic brilliance. He felt Ian could convey these feelings without necessarily experiencing them.

    RIP Ian

  • most awesome song ever

chokes me up all the time!!

  • one of my favourite songs!

  • rare l melanoclical ,depreses me a bit now that im a bit weak emotionaly, mmm, how u call this Genre?+

This video always chokes me so haunting (sic) and beautiful

  • I don't wanna die yet, but i might be getting there

  • I also wana die.

  • Too goog for just loving it!

  • the best song of joy division!

  • Joy Division/Ian curtis... what is that all about it was just "Joy Division".. it use to upset ian to see some one write that you know.

  • fuck suicide, we are already dead.

  • @PLAGUEZZZ Hell yeah, we´re just zombies... ;-) Joy Division 4ever!

  • i'm kind of addicted to breathing

    so forget suicide

  • Don't try suicide nobody gives a damn

  • if we cared, we wouldn't

  • Definitely my top suicide anthem....if things got that bad, mind you.

  • I know I want to live. Come, join me in life :)

  • I think i want to die.

  • **Celestial**

  • I am the fanofjoy! Always loved this band and will forever!

  • What a song, and what a band they were ......

  • It seems like Anton Corbijn knew exactly how to take Ian's words and put it into a visual experience. Thank god he did Ian's biopic, anyone else would have fucked it up most likely. But Anton turned it into one of the greatest biopics ever made.

  • What band does WMG, not have ties to? It seems like they own EVERYBODY, ha ha.

  • universal, capital, bmg, sony, polygram - the biggins

  • Those aren't bands, ha ha.

  • Well that's the trouble with record companies these days. Everyone seems to be owned by everyone. It make it almost impossible to set up an indie label without some major pulling the rug from underneath you and buying it out of your hands.

  • They suck.... Boycott Warner Bros.

  • @swans1997

All those companies are really pissing me off. All these great King Crimson videos were removed from youtube that I listened to at school.

At least Joy Division has been sparred.

  • my god if only

  • i fucking love this song, fuck yeah deep, watched the movie for the first time not long ago and many times since, love it

  • So "wonderFULL" *-* really great... Ian Curts 4ever will be in our hearts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • such an amazing song... i recomend anyone to pick up the album PERMENANT from ebay, each track is fantastic and ian's voice and lyrics are wonderful. absolute genius and missed by many x

  • There were alternative lyrics for this and for Love will tear us apart. 'Touching from a distance' is well worth a read.

  • yes. its quite a good and well written book.

  • Great band, great song.

    One thing: it's 1978, not 1988.

Ian Curtis hung himself in 1980.

  • the video was MADE in 1988

  • Comment removed

  • I believe the video for the song was made after his death.

  • The song is from 1980 but the video was made in 1988 in order to promote Joy Division compilation album "Substance". Atmosphere was released oficially as a singl;e in 1988 after Ian's Dath and during the existance of New Order. Clip was directed by Anton Corbijn.

  • True, dont know why people are down thumbing you mate lol

  • One of the greatest British poets! Speaking the language of the people. Neither complicated nor tedious (The perfect description, thanks Zidanie5!)! And the video really captures the essence of the song. Great!!!

  • "The people"? Oh, come on. Magnificent song, though.

  • <3<3<3<3<3

  • Ian Curtis RIP. I would encourage everyone to watch Strosek and any other Werner Herzog film they can get their hands on.

  • Listened to this in the days before my wedding.

Then again when I found out my wife was pregnant.

This song is synonymous with the happiest times of my life.

  • anton corbjin did a great job with the video

  • there great !!!!!

  • This song gives me the ultimate goosebumps!!

  • Joy Division made such an impact within music. This video is so haunting, it's beatiful though.

  • Ia curtis is dead but he'll ever live inside us

  • the video is scary

  • People like you find it easy - so simple yet so powerful a sentence.

Only Ian Curtis could be poetic and angry altogether, without being complicated nor tedious

  • nice comment, uncomplicated nor tedious..

  • nice comment, uncomplicated nor tedious...

  • totally agree! too bad he killed himself

  • People like you, so simple yet so powerful a sentence, only Ian Curtis could be poetic and angry altogether without being complicated nor tedious

  • This song, along with Clinic - Distortions, genuinely move me.

  • I agree with u

  • joy division is the best fucking band ever!!!!! that ain't no lie!!!!!

  • Love Ian Curtis!! he´s the the greatest singer and his letters are deep!!! He was very cute =D

  • I hope you guys mark this as spam, but, could you guys come and check out our cover of Atmosphere? It's posted as a video response, just under this video.

  • Wasn't Curtis already dead in 1988?

  • yes but i thibk the video came later. its confusing but that what the file entails.

    regardless its a wondrous song/video.

  • The vieo is a tribute to him.

Directed by the director of Control.

  • He died in 1980.

  • He dead on 18th may 1980.. the day of my birthday =(

  • A lot of Joy Division's work was released during the late 80's. Tons of compilations, live videos, etc.

  • Best Joy Division song ever

  • :'( :') this is beatiful :D:D:D:D :'D

  • Some music transcends normal emotional depth.

  • And it's really too bad that the great majority of music being made the last 15 or so years has really been stripped of whatever soul it could have had by the mega-conglomerate corporate labels. New groups/acts aren't allowed to grow. They're thrown out there like pop fodder and expected to make money RIGHT NOW. Labels don't care about the long run, they only care about making immediate money on their investments. When a band stumbles, they toss in another shallow outfit and the cycle continues.

  • the negative comments are going to stop ... now!

  • Einfach nur unfaßbar GUT!

  • mi ricorda così tanto la mia ex...e la ragazza che era con me :)

  • Brits are next to japaneese on suicidal rates, but Ian's suicide was drug/alcohol induced, plus he was sad.

  • are you crazy or what ? joy division the best

  • Come on! It's sad music, that's what made it so good, you know, darkwave, gothic and stuff revolve around sadness, depression and suicide.

  • your facts are wrong. The former soviet states have highest rates. Ireland has higher rates than rest of the UK.

  • who cares!

  • Esse é o ultimo som do filme, é preciso segurar a onda pra não se emocionar. Foi uma perda muito grande, muito grande.

  • Some of the best songs are written when life isn't running as we would like,

Manchester these days is full of tourists thanks to JD & others alike,

It's also stopped raining as much thanks to global warming... Keep running your gas guzzlers.. Cheers !

  • incredible....the best song ever,congratulations from spain.

  • Great Band, great song and super video :) It really blends with this single.

  • No wonder he was suicidal, he lived in Manchester.

Shitehole full of red brick terraces where it never stops raining

  • isn't that the whole country? cloudy days ... just like seattle ... i killed myself after 2 days of no sun ...

  • yeah im surprised britains suicide level isnt alot higher, the weather alone is a downer

  • How very dare you!

Here in London we are always bathed in glorious sunshine ;)

  • Seattle is a sunny paradise by comparison. Trust me. I've lived in both.

If Ian Curtis had grown up in Seattle, he might still be alive.

But he might not have produced such great works either.

  • No matter where he grew up - he was a genius regardless - this song sends shivers down my spine - the instrumentals along with ians haunting vocals - man its unreal!

  • If you;re on the edge make bif step, jump!

  • 0:56 look its a jawa!!! sorry, great band, great song

  • the greatest song of all time bar none tho the quality on this is not the best still pisses on anything any band around these days can muster

  • I was deaf before listen joy division, but i was also with some else , and now i m alone, near to the edge

  • The edge is the place to be, keeps you on your toes and aware, alert and ready to face it all, 3 2 1 Relax.

  • I agree.

  • ..and these thrilling starlets just before refrain......

    amazing...

  • I ADORE this song and Corjin's works even though I find this vid a bit disturbing...

  • Ian is my uncle... who cares about the date... I am going to do a tribute to him for MTV Icon... with New Order... and my band... Muse...

  • for reals!? wasn't into new order much but i have heard of muse. thanks for stopping by!!!

  • terrible sound quality.

  • where does 1988 come into it? should be 1980.

  • just copying the info that the video came from

  • Red,brown or mustard?

  • this song always makes me paint my face with sauce.

  • are those people in robes any significance to the song?

  • i would do anything to go back in time and meet him............. ill admit a tears ran down my cheeks........R.I.P Ian Curtis........

  • anton corbijn after band Decomposition realised that clip
