  • more precisely, from 8:15 to the end gives you a feeling of another dimension

  • watching the whole two minutes from 8:00 to the end is going to give the weak hearted person a heart attack

  • Comment removed

  • 0:27 starts?

  • what do you want for your birthday Son? A Yo Yo Ma

  • BLABLABLA .... This man plays on "show off" mood , and the music is just like a hoar for him .

  • I'm mad there's no sheet music in front of him and the whole time he's playing his head is back not even looking at the cello, he looks so concentrated and focused and he makes it look soooooo easy...but I guess since he's Yo-Yo Ma he got it like that lol

  • the whole concert it seems like he has an orgasm o.O

  • @ZItronee14 me too

  • Yes, I played the orchestral part of this song last year in my Youth Symphony, and there is definitely something timeless about it.

I usually listen to trance music because I feel like it is classical music on steroids, yet this song seems to be trance music on steroids.

    It's quite overwhelming actually...

  • absolutely amazing!

  • watching him and meeting him may 10th!!!!!!!!

  • IMHO The Sol Gabetta Danish version is the best.

  • Yo-Yo Ma's version is more powerful and assertive than Jacqueline du Pre's version. But both are very good.

  • Elgar was in the hospital, when he composed this.

  • i'd play the chello too, if it made me orgasm like that ha

  • I listen to dubstep, house, rock and non-modern hip hop, but there is always something timeless and appealing about this music. love it.

  • @Mizuno6857 same, i listen to house, techno, trance, electro, dubstep, dnb, jazz, blues, funk, 80's pop, old hip hop (80s and 90s), classic rock, reggae, latino, basically every genre of music except for gospel and country, but there is always that appeal that art music has, everything from bach, mozart, to contemporary like hans zimmer has a special appeal.

  • @Mizuno6857 that's because a lot of genius went into composing this type of music

  • YOU are the trolls , with your very low level of taste and your absolute lack of any knowledge in ways of interpretating .

  • YouTube needs to implant a "Flag for Trolling" button...

  • @helloremr ive seen your channel and you are NOT better you are nowhere NEAR as good as yo yo ma to go away and get a life

  • 152 people choked when they played this at a concert

  • FUCK the virtuosos !!! I want MUSICIANS !!!!

  • What is the name of the song please !!!

  • @Shiby102 Are you kidding me? LOL Read the title.... P.S it's not a song no-one is singing. :P

  • Comment removed

  • wow. genius

  • It could be hard , and always bad .

  • @GA4N all im saying is you shouldnt judge skill when you have none. I've seen various other cellists and this guys a virtuoso.

  • it's ok

  • 您的愛仍給我鼓勵

  • @GA4N hahah. i sort of get what you mean. but i still think yoyoma makes a nice sound and that there's absolutely nothing wrong with that brand of playing.

  • 152 people tried hiring chuck norris to play this......he failed...

  • it is not necessary to be a brewer to be able to taste or test a beer .

  • When he is playing , you can see : "look at ME , how I am fantastic , how I play good , how I take a very good time ...." . I find that kind of playing particularly obscene and sterile . And particularly humiliating for Elgar . See Mrs. Du Pré in the same piece . She is in absolute devotion . She tries to do her very best (and the result is beyond words .... ) when Mr.Ma stays in egocentric sufficience , with a musical result of pretentious nasty selfishness . I shall resist against this !

  • @GA4N are you kidding me?

  • @GA4N oh please not another one of those musical trolls

  • @xbasket12x youre mean

  • @lagear111 oh please

  • Yes you are absolutely right . I am a very bitter man ,who complains . About these kind of interpretations . And , in my angryness , I was too far . I said that Mr. Ma was a shitty monkey. That is insulting and not christian because attacking the person . I beg Pardon for that . But I maintain that Mr.Ma is playing LIKE a shitty monkey . And I am very fed up with auto-sufficient musicians who take the most fantastic repertoire for their public pretentious masturbations .

  • @GA4N wow... maybe you need to learn how to play the cello then you can talk, considering he is one of the cellist in the world.

  • @GA4N

Wow I'm surprise trolls like you exist around these videos. Isn't it time for you to go die off somewhere yet?

  • @GA4N i play cello, do you? maybe you should learn, because what he's doing is really hard. buggar off troll

  • @GA4N I certainly do not. You're a bitter man who has to whine and complain about how "bouring" the "shitty monkey" Mr. Ma is. I'm not going to argue with you about his playing ability, but for the love of god, show some damn respect.

  • 0:26 to 1:01 - Summary of my life.

  • I bet hes real good with them fingers lol

  • it gets better every time.

  • jealous of what ??? certainly not of mr. ma ..... and to play like Jacqueline ....... far away .... but her existence is sufficient I think ....

  • And , as conclusion , I wanted to inform that exist another world than the bouring YO-YO , or Karajan , or Rostropovich , or Giulini , or Zimmermann , or Perlman , or Ashkenazy . This world with music of blood and guts has people like Furtwaengler , Schnabel , Lipatti , Casals , Bernstein (in Mahler) , Heifetz , Horenstein , Katchen ....... OK ? Thank you for your attention .

  • People and listeners of today want classical music exactly as relaxing , contemplative and cute and nice like a baby's ass or a cold flat pizza . I don't think that Bach , Beethoven , Schumann , Chopin , Mahler , Bruckner , Scriabin and all the others would be happy to see their music played so shitty quiet as yo-yo Ma does in this Concerto . That is wrong and insulting for these composers . If you want in your private life music as this way , you are free . But I am free too to comment .

  • I don't share your feeling about the "peaceful" community of music . First of all , there is no "community " , and if it could exist one I would try to destroy it . Because art , as religion, is a personnal choice . But , in a way , you are right ; and the reason because 99% of all classical music recordings of today are bad , bouring , castrated and some sort of this soup , is precisely because it exist a community which wants this perception of classical music .

  • just watching him play is beautiful, the way he's clearly FEELING the music he's making <3

  • @bookworm360 The man is in his own contemplation and is of course very pleased of his own performance ....

  • This is absolutely gorgeous! I always love seeing everyone's interpretation of this piece :)

  • And please , don't mix effort and result . I recognize that mr. yo yo ma worked hardly , but I feel the result as very bad . And I shall NOT walk away . Your "speaking interdiction" is very typical of the main stream thinking of today and you are precisely what I hate . GO to hell .

  • I am not a 16 years old student or pupil ... I am 54 years old and listen carefully about thousands of interpretation since 40 years . But I love what I love and I am fed up with main stream thinking in these late years of today . YES : I agree my gods are people like Du Pré , Ferrier , Josef Hassid , Feinberg , Szigeti , Sofronitzky , Gould , Bruno Walter , Feuermann , Godowsky , Klemperer , Kabasta , Hyun Jung Lim , Patzak , and NOT the bouring castrated Yo-Yo Ma . That's it .

  • @GA4N If that's how you feel, and don't feel like being judged on it, why dont you keep this to yourself?

  • @ihearttdwp2 Do you live in a free world , my friend ?

  • @GA4N yes, but there's no point in going on a video just to say some one sucks. If you're really 54 years old then thats sad that me, a 14 year old, need to say this to you.

  • @ihearttdwp2 OK , that's nice . I can understand your reaction and I respect it . But , if you are one time as old as I am , and you hear the music you love so much played by treaters and humiliatiated , you will perhaps pardon me for my very angry reaction ....

  • @GA4N

I find it very disconcerting to see a 54-year-old being so adolescent and inappropriate as to call Yo-Yo Ma a "shitty monkey" and telling other (possibly young) people to "GO to hell." Personally I liked Du Pré's rendition of Elgar more, but Ma put different nuances that I liked quite a lot.

Although I am way more an admirer of Du Pré than Ma, what you have said is completely uncalled for; not only are you disrespecting the artist who plays it in the way he loves (look at his face!), ...

  • @FortunatelyUnstable but also, you disrespect the audience because they have different likes and dislikes than you.

    Shame on you.

As I said before, I personally liked Du Pré's rendition way more than Ma's, but what you have done was completely inappropriate and classless. If you want to insult Ma, do it on Du Pré's video comments, not here.

I feel utterly ashamed to have to remind a fellow 54-year-old Du Pré admirer that the music community is peaceful.

  • @FortunatelyUnstable "Shame on you " , who are you ? God ?

  • Venetian Snares brought me here! :)

  • Who thinks it's cool that 6 years ago my mom went out for lunch with him? Both cellists :(:

  • Poor cello ...... this was the instrument of Jacqueline Du Pré ....... and now in the hands of this shitty monkey .... in the same concerto of Elgar ...... poor world .....

  • @GA4N I prefer Yo Yo Ma's version

  • @GA4N undoubtedly you have put forth not even a fraction of the effort that this man has throughout his entire life.... in all likely hood you posses bed sores for sitting on your ass for elongated periods of time doing nothing but crassly commenting on things a fool like you couldn't even fathom to achieve. rednecks like you induce vomiting, and if you don't even care for this music than do not comment... walk away

  • @GA4N jealous much? we would love to hear you play...seriously...please play us something maestro...for the love of Du Pré...show us how its done.

  • @TurdBlossom95 Are you serious? Your comment shows how little you know about classical music. I'm guessing you're a 16 year old hs student that wants to feel like you're cool because you don't agree with the mass norm but realize this; classical music is about expression and expression will change. If you don't agree with it, that's your choice but unless you're a world class musician don't go knocking other people's art. and i'm curious. who are ones currently worthy of recognition then?

  • amazing !

  • 3:00 the epicness! ;_;

  • @fiskefyren Please , look the same by Du Pré .......

  • A historical performance!

  • Too much coughing.((

  • c-c-c-h-h-i-l-l-l-s

  • This is what real talent sounds like.

  • that's George Carlin introducing. nice.

  • @jeffsleasman I can't un-hear that now..

  • @jeffsleasman the comedian?

  • @ihearttdwp2 yep.

  • @jeffsleasman lol, are you sure?

  • Come to Australia Yo-Yo Ma!

  • Wonderful! :]

  • amazing! and without sheet music!

  • what is wrong with 152 people?!?

  • @cellobrox2 your dirty momma was blowing cocks of those 152

  • @ytertyu ummm... no. not really.

  • @cellobrox2 then why u care about so much how many people disliked this vid ?? maybe not your momma but it was ur daddy blowing them , ha ? ;)

  • yo-yo ma is literally the most expressive man I know of. he is so f'in great

  • @TurdBlossom95 Sounds like a lot of hate... Blah Blah Blah....

  • @TurdBlossom95

    pfftahahah, you seem upset bro

  • @TurdBlossom95 keep embarrassing yourself, moron.

  • @TurdBlossom9 there are no basses because no kid wants to take up an instrument twice their height. bit depressing, really, it's an endangered instrument. but that doen't mean you have to take it out on cellos which frankly, in my opinion, are the most beautiful instruments when played right.

  • fuck yo yo ma

  • ...

  • Brilliant. Beautiful. Music is life.

  • when the bow meets the string vibrational physics meets God. it is the divine interface that transcends the senses and ordinary emotion. God is the musician and his instrument is YYM...

  • Here's a picture of a man infused, meshed and lost in his own world of his art! A kind of love affair only he knows. What a performance!!

  • Música eleva nossa alma ao desconhecido fazendo assim focarmos em um estado perfeito de plenitude; essa música enaltece nossa alma!!!!

    Lindo parabéns!!!!!

Music raises our soul to the stranger thus making to be in a perfect state of fullness; this music invades and clean our soul! Pretty congratulations!

    By Rafael Persan

  • yo yo looks like hes really enjoying it, like hes almost climaxing. lol

  • amazing, jacqueline du pre would be proud

  • The best thing Yo Yo Ma has ever done!!! His Bach Suites notwithstanding.

  • i'd happily marry yo yo ma for his talent...

  • @jessicarabbit184 I would too.... and i'm a MAN :O

  • 152 people in the world clearly have suffered some kind of a blow to the head

  • Comment removed

  • only 152 dislikes. beat that, jjustin beiber!

  • Awesome name, dude ;)

  • goosebumps all over. the man truly plays with a passion and I admire the conductors precision and the entire audience are so lucky to have it heard through life' waves unlike me having to hear it through digital electronic waves.

  • this song sounded fimilar...i showed it to my mom and she said she played it to me when i was still inside her belly. haha:p

  • @adayinothersshoes Thats intriguing thats youve said that. Ive joked about that same connection when I find some classical to be so familiar. She (my mother) plays cello.

  • @PaulScala ahh thats nice...my mom used to put headphones on her belly and play music.lol:p

  • @adayinothersshoes i was still inside my dad nut sack when they played it to me

  • @BlueRice you and i both won that race buddy!

  • 3.03 EPIC

  • I can't believe you would say that this is weak. Yo-Yo Ma is one of the best musicians of our time. When he plays he plays with such emtion. He is music

  • OMG,This is the MAN!! Beautiful.

  • there are no words..

  • Now i know where the saying "let's make beautiful music together" came from.

  • If you dislike this rendition of the concerto, and prefer the Jacqueline Du Pre so much over any other possible rendition to the point where you've stopped listening to the music, I reccomend you stick to her rendition, instead of spreading your ignorance around other videos. This is a beautiful rendition.

  • That is so weak and silly in comparison with Jackie (du Pré) .... yo yo is a sad clown ....GROTESK ! poor cello I hope he has no memories of the his mistress ...

  • My Uncle shared this with me this evening and said, "If your heart doesn't speak to you the way music speaks to Yo Yo Ma, you aren't trying hard enough." This man feels more than music to me....He has lived fully.

  • this is too beautiful. although it portrays the corrupt world, theres a hint of hope in the music. i love it.

  • Elgar--the composer of secret sorrows. I love his music which is at once reticent and passionate--which makes it twice as appealing. English composers seem to specialize in this double quality---wistfulness. I hear it no where else.

  • WHAT KIND OF TWISTED PERSON WOULD DISLIKE THIS?!?!?!

  • Fucking beautiful.

  • Beautiful.

  • this is beautiful, so fitting that he is playing jacquilin's davidoff stradivarius :')

  • words can't describe this.

  • I play viola (the baby sister of this instrament) and it moves me he truely is a master of this instrament

  • @4evaflyleaf instr*u*ment. :)

  • @benr2513 bahahah i guess I should know how to spell it bahahaha :D

  • George Carlin?

  • Yo-Yo Ma doesn't just play the Cello, he makes LOVE to it! I mean this in a non-insulting way. THIS WAS AMAZING!

  • @B0uzzy he tells a story with the cello

  • This is really great, very precise playing. I have a huge amount of respect for Yo-Yo Ma... but I think this piece belongs Jacqueline du Pre...

  • incredible - ive never heard him play Cello - event though ive heard about him.. now i understand why people talk about him - he is incredible smooth when he plays WOW!..

  • Yo-Yo Ma at his best (but it seems he always is…). This is indeed a breathtaking performance by this most sensitive musician together with the masterful direction of maestro Barenboim.

  • lol my friend pronounces his name YO MA MA

  • I didn't know Leslie Chow played the cello?!

  • Comment removed

  • who can dislike yo yo ma? seriously -__-

  • @JesusDiedlol667 Get a life...

  • Goodness this man is a phenomenal musician... I love this video...

  • his music is so gorgeous, I got chills at the first notes

  • *by your

  • hello and sorry if you find me mean or offensive, or im a busybody. I don't have any malicious intentions but @CHRISTFAVORSME why do you keep spamming the comments?! srsly dude you CURSE AND SWEAR YET YOU say christ favors you. look Im no one to judge but I do think that ppl are offended by our comments. CAN WE JUST ENJOY ELGAR?!

  • 36:08 in Warp Records Memorial Mix

  • nice but at 8 mins I couldn't help but shout GET A ROOM

  • I was near tears in like the first few seconds, but I absolutely lost it at 3:03

  • @ThimsNire I think lots people feel the same way...me included

  • La primera vez que la escuche fue en la película de Agust Rush.. Me encanto!

  • People laughed at me when I said music is not only heard... but also *seen*.

One of the greatest examples right here...

The first few, painful, sorrowful, deep notes were... ah can't even describe it.. they hit my heart, my soul right there.. but not only did my emotional being respond..my physical being responded too. My breathing was up by the middle of the piece.. tears streaming down my face.. this is life..this is majesty.. this is the air I breathe.. Thank you, Yo-Yo Ma..

  • @ChristFavorsME Loll, what a troll.

    Trololol to you too.

  • @ChristFavorsME I think you should watch other performers who are of your 'fine Western culture' watch?v=zT5IUQynPkg and tell me if you see anything different. Also, I'd brush up on your Bible knowledge if I were you, since the Bible states: "And he said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" Matthew 22:37-39 (ESV)

  • @Rachiewoowoo Those people must have been blind.

  • How can this possibly be a place to argue about religion?

  • @harveyardman Typical atheist bigorty. I didn't *argue* a word about religion, I merely signed my posts with praise to Jesus Christ our lord. Sorry to tell you but the time when you can have us fed to the lions is long past. Deal with it, you arrogant twit.

  • very pretty- I'd say a rather "safe" interpretation, but still incomparable to jackie's. he lacks the passion. I like his cello though.

  • Oh how beautiful it is!

  • T________T...dont cry...dont cry.

  • That's quite a cello he's got there...

  • i prefer du pre

  • I'm so proud knowing that my great great grandfather was a good friend and violinist of Elgar. It makes me proud to be English. Beautiful music.

  • @naterc93 "Spelt" is British variant of "spelled".

Praise be to Jesus Christ our Lord.

  • @naterc93 I was going to say what ChristFavorsME just said, but he beat me too it. I live in Canada, and I like to use spelt instead of spelled, even though they are both acceptable here. It's a good thing your original comment was removed, because now I can't remember the reason I had to make you look stupid, but it seems that you found a new person to pick on, about their religion this time. So enjoy your miserable excuse for a life and remember, you are always right ;).
