It's more probable that Christians set the fire than Nero. Agrippina Nero's mother, was plotting to kill Nero and put Britannicus (Nero's step brother) on the throne. Knowing what kind of she-wolf she was - killing mother hurt much more Nero, than killing son had hurt Agrippina - wise move. Nero's palace didn't take third of a Rome. It was more like new city center - most of it was for public use. Very few also knows that Nero was probably first ruler in history who tried to ban death penalty.
@largesatsuma Not really. Before Diocletian they weren't ever deified until after they died. With Nero the Princeps (first citizen) idea was still pretty powerful.
Part of Nero's problem is that he pissed off the rich and powerful which are the people who had the time and education to write the histories, so...
Presenting rumour and propaganda as fact.come on american documentry makers, you are not doing this for presentation to the UN to make the case for war so maybe consider being a little more open about your sources and the nature and bias of their claims eh?????? Im waiting for this Doc' to talk about Parthian WMDs next :)
The history channel is so inaccurate, but they make it appear as though they know what they a talking about when infact, they have no bloody idea. As the comment reads above by @CornerPeaTime ^^^
Wow, History Channel, talk about a POORLY researched docu. 1. Nero was not in Rome when the city burned, he arrived 3 days later and did everything to stop it. 2. There is no proof that he "kicked his pregnant wife to death" and 3. It is most likely that followers of the Cult of Isis (Egyptians) were blamed for the fire, not Christians...come one, a bit more in depth and accuracy....
@CornerPeaTime ...well i did and what your saying is just oneside and that here is the other what make your so right?....an did he build hes palace(big ass palace) on the ppl lands?.....again not saying your wrong but if the shoefits hehe
@CornerPeaTime ...it's an American docu on Europian culture! What would you expect?! Most of the Americans believe in an imaginary friend called ''god'', if they cannot get that one right don't expect accuracy regarding History!
@CornerPeaTime That was one historians view, Tacticus, a guy who suspiciously only had praises for Nero while everyone else was calling him a tyrant. I mean Tacticus even says that Nero rushed into the city without any bodyguard and tried to rescue people, clearly that don't sit straight, and Tacticus is obviously lying
Many other sources claim that it was Nero indeed who set the fire.
@CornerPeaTime DO you have any articles to support the theory that it was the Egyptians who started the fire? This is certainly the first time i've ever heard that hypothesis.
@CornerPeaTime Slow down armchair Historian....that's a minor fact. He was still considered by many to have started the fire. There or not, it's irrelevant - but what they gave was one 'theory'. And theories are ALL they have. No one knows exactly what happened. And also, yes, another theory was him kicking his pregnant wife. So, settle down...the main, important facts are there. These people have more historic knowledge in their middle finger than you will have in your life.
That Nero chap did endeed go little overboard. Perhaps a smaller instrument would have been more appropiate when the city burned. And perhaps burning Christians was also a bit too much. A proper spanking would most likely have been enough.
What this episode seems to miss is that EVERY CULTURE had slaves at this point in history. Indeed, all nations and cultures had slavery at one point or another. Being without forced labor or otherwise indentured people is a fairly new development in human history.
It's called roman nose f@g, jews have more of a large hook nose, take a good look at americas founding fathers and you'll see most of them had large noses

Oh yeah...Nero's as gay as Liberace.

Nero was a very theatrical character, very selfish, very sensual, cruel, and had mother issues. Very homo sounding to me.

Emperors were generally regarded as demi-Gods, so I don't believe anything they did would have been regarded as shocking. It was just accepted.

No, the christians where blamed. Read the writings of Tacitus, Suetonius, and Cassius Dio before you talk and teach others.
