  • With all due respect to Dale Earnhardt, this should have been #1 on that list...amazing. I was not quite 5 years old that day, but I vaguely remember parts of that race. My bias is on the table. I'm a Bill Elliott fan and have been since...you guessed it...1985. That was the greatest race anybody ever run anywhere, period...hope to watch the whole thing again sometime.

  • "They were unbeatable. I've never seen anything like it." Because he forgot about Jeff Gordon winning 13 races in 1998 (that's about 1 out of 3 folks). Forget that though, what Tony Stewart did during the Chase last year was ridiculous.

  • @aquariex24 ...gordon won 13...out of 33, Bill won 11...out of 28. It's more tahn reasonable to say that had NASCAR had the same bloated schedule taht they have now...BIll would have won a total of 13 or 14...Bill was almost unbeatable at the big tracks then, and there are way more big tracks now...and there were more big tracks in '98 tahn '85.

  • @lenoirwrestlingfan sorry for typing errors...that and than

  • @lenoirwrestlingfan That's good but don't forget racing 13 years later it was way more competitive and harder to win than it was during Elliot's prime. Just as it's more competitive and harder to win now than it was when Gordon won those 13. I mean the simple fact that Elliot was actually able to come back from 2 full laps down and win shows you how unfair the level of competition was back then.

  • @aquariex24...I disagree, Gordon waxed everybody in '98. Bill waxed everybody in '85...same difference. Also, the only serious competitor Gordon had for most of '98 was Mark Martin...just as Bill's only serious competitor for the bulk of 1985 was Darrell Waltrip. For what that's worth, I'll take Darrell over Mark any day. That Talladega race included Darrell Waltrip, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, Bobby Allison...just to name a few...a weak and non-competive field, it was not.

  • Fasted race car in history.

  • God i loved Elliot, Fuck Earnhardt

  • Ha and people accuse Jimmie Johnson of "cheating" today imagine if another Bill Elliott 1985 happened people would be bombing race tracks over it knowing the shitty attitude today's NASCAR fans have. They rather bitch and moan than watch the race and enjoy it.

  • That was when NASCAR was worth watching.

  • @mtdewandal it's still worth watching.... and apparently fans agree - ratings were up significantly this season.

  • Bill Elliott had Guts to run that fast all day in a car with no wind tunnel testing at a time where Cale and Bobby still ruled the Super Speedways!.People are forgetting Cale was not going flat out but Bill had to all day to get his 2 laps back ,So Bill drove all day at those faster speeds he was used to it and went around Cale like it was nothing..Nascar guys had never gone this fast before and Bill had a lot of faith in his Ford and the motor held up beutifully. Awesome Bill from Dawsonville!

  • @MrJsmyers

    I TOTALLY agree with you!

But at the end of this segment..they are saying "time out!" and wondering if it was legal. Even Pemberton @ 2:03 calls it the "Biggest Waxing" in NASCAR history!?? WTF does that mean!!?

Like I said..I agree with you! I believe he had one of the strongest cars ever, and on top of that had the BALLS to run it as mhard/fast as he could.

But I don't understand how it's on the GREATEST moments, if half the commentors are implying cheating/foul play.

  • @negtype13 Yeh it did not take them long to change the rules......Im like you they act like his car was illegal and Rule book wise it was as legal as can be...Ernie had found a secret at making that ford fast as a rocket...His Engine builds had different compression ratios on each piston...But he was smart enough to make the thing hold up...Ernie was a genius like maurice petty was...Then they say him and Bill were cheating....SAD Old # 9 was the car....i love it too....

  • @MrJsmyers

That's awesome man!! SO GREAT to hear that!!! Fuckin' CLOSURE for anyone that thought it was a "Cheat!"

As long as it is KNOWN that at THAT time EVERYTHING was within the Rules/Regulations!

Plus ...I will Always believe that more than half of it was the fact that Young Bill had the Balls to run that car as fast/hard as he could! Not like an old timer/"less nerved" Yarborough.

Remember Bill is STILL the ONLY one to run a lap at Dega under 45 seconds! GO BILL!

    \m/ >< \m/

  • @negtype13 Yeh man Bill was awesome......Sad they changed the rules and went to that dumb restrictor plate racing.....I liked it when it took Balls to win and Now it is just about being in the right draft and having a great guy to draft off of...That Aint Racing! They have also made it more dangerous, Now you have no throttle to get your car back when it gets loose.....NO FUN ANYMORE!

  • @MrJsmyers

    Amen Brother!....A-fuckin-MEN!

  • This was racing/ Talladega and the restricter plate crap is junk racing

  • how exactly is the new car better? slower....check, safer......check?.......less exciting......check, can't run on its own.....check.......

talladega and daytona are jokes now with this car

  • he wouldve lapped the field 3 times if he didnt have that oil problem at the beginning.

thats how dominant that '85 thunderbird was

  • Brought a tear to my eye.

  • AWESOME BILL FROM DAWESONVILLE!!!

i been to the pool hall a few times : )
