There is a lot of magic and power in joik. Many years ago I did some Mongolian overtone chanting and passed into an altered state of consciousness. I had vision of myself in Tundra and when I opened my mouth, the bark of a reindeer was emitted. A herd of reindeer came and nuzzled me and welcomed me into their herd. Later I dreamed of being brought down in the snow by wolves. It was many years later I discovered my maternal genetic heritage was Sámi. Now I am very proud of my Sámi blood.

I saw Professor Somby joik the wolf at a conference in San Francisco. It was one of the most powerful performances I've ever seen. When you joik something, you don't sing about it; you call it forth into existence. He became the wolf, like a shape-shifter. I'll never forget that moment. It was awe-inspiring.
