I like the looks of the New A6 a little more, but with the M Sport package the 5er gets the edge. Mercedes 5 series looks great except for the rear. The Jag XF beats them all on looks IMO.
When I first saw this car on the computer I thought it looked bland, however when I finally saw it in real life, it looked so pure and refined. It looks like the car for the mature driver, unlike the people who buy Mercedes or Audi.
-generation 5 series. BMW have clearly gone more into the Luxury spectrum filled already by the Mercedes E-Class which makes both cars more similar than ever before. Which now leaves a gap in the executive sector for a more sporting orientated saloon which would best be filled by the upcoming Alfa Romeo 169 due out 2011.
In my opinion the Exterior styling and Interior Design is much better than it's predesssor the E60, which was Chris Bangle experimentalism gone too far! The E60 was probably the least attractive 5 series in it's history. It's pleasing to see the new 5 series has regained some of the classic Design elements and harmonised them into modern progressive but subtle look.
What the critics have noticed with the new 5 series is that it has lost some it's sportiness once so affiliated by previous-
Personally, I love the way the new 5-series looks. It's certainly miles better than the Bangle-designed "sharky" previous generation. And also, it looks much better "in person".
@matrox Newsflash, buddy - there are other countries on this Earth besides "Murica" and something called "Yurop", and in there, people speak other languages. Those people also have every right to start a blog in their own language, if they want.
I agree with the other posts. Bangle is starting to look more like the visionary he was. BMW has messed up this new F10 styling big time. Under Bangle's direction, the design team came up with a decent evolution forward in style. This new car is just comprimised. The e60 M5 was the king of brute force sedan styling. I currently have a 2006 e60 (530i) and will NOW consider other makes because BMW dropped the ball. I love the power of the 535i, but the exterior and interior missed the mark.
We got our 520d some days ago, and with the lower sport-suspension, 19-inch alloys and alpine-white paint the car looks *brilliant*, even better than our e60 with 19-inch wheels and the M-styling package. I was skeptical at first, but with some nice wheels and the alpine-white paint job it looks fantastic!
i think the new f10 has disapointed alot of us..i've owned a couple of 5 series cars and they were all beauties(my fav is the E60), on the outside and beasts under the hood..this one kind of became an anti climax in my opinion..mercedes has gone ahead with the new E class look..some may not like it..but in my opinion it looks far more modern than the new 5..

i think the looks are rather blend too.. but i think the reason for that is the sheer size. its far larger than the E, providing more comfort. also i think the e60 came out looking aggressive by it self. where as f10 reminds me of the e39. cames out with basic strong lines, and when u but a bodykit on it it looks more sporty.
that said the M sport bodykit looks strange, i recommend u take the ALPINA one. very much better looking.
yes i wish BMW stuck to the outrageous Bangle styling - it was more in your face, fun and youthful. now the styling is too conservative for my taste. this is not a rolls royce - its a bimmer - it should look the part.
What's the point of a sporty car if it doesn't have sporty looks? That's why I loved the E60...it looked like a car you wouldn't want to deal with. It looked mean, aggresive and sporty and its interior and ride quality was great too. The M5 E60 looked amazing and muscular, I just can't see how the M5 F10 would pull this off....it looks too much like a 3 series from the back and the grilles in front are disproportionally big.I think I'll stick with my E60
when i say e60 i mean the previous model of bmw 5 that i have know 2004 model that i mean you fool not mercedes.the actual model not the new one f10 is more beautiful.
5er was always the benchmark, the E is too biased towards comfort, it is too soft. 5er is the best overall package and the E does not handle anywhere near as nicely as the 5er.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The 5 series is definately not the car to beat. The E class is always much better than the 5. Especially if you have to sit in it and look at the interior. The only aspect in which the 5 series is better is its handling. Audi A6 does not compare to either, it is basically an A4 with a longer wheel base.
Your obviously delusional from the your meth habit that you took up to try and forget the times in your childhood where daddy would come into your bedroom at night to play "Find the Snake". The 5 series takes a gigantic turd from the peak of Mt Everest on the E class
I do Agree with you about the back lights, and it does look like the Infinite G, and 1998 Mitsubishi Megna, however its better than old lights that looked very feminine.
My brother owns 09 750, the new engine is a monster with the 2 Turbo, but the car is just a whale, and full of sensors and equipment. and I bet the 5 series will have the same feeling, as they share the same interior and tech, flat front, wide sides and narrow back.
@proteanview e39 is my fav and my personal car going on 9 years. In the f10 I saw the old g35 in the rear also, but then I saw it in person, looks much better in person. Now I think I'll get one (e39 will become the weekend car)
@proteanview Bro BMW originally had the "L" shaped tailights on their cars dating back to the 1980s. Infiniti are the ones who copied BMW in their quest to challenge the 3 series. Not the other way around...
Guys what are you smoking? The A6 Audi beats the 5 series in performance every time... I´m not talking about design beacause thats a question of taste but a simple look into both cars parameters will show you, that the A6 comes with 100HP´s more in average for even less money than the 5 series... Well still it remains a nice car... no question, both of them... but if it comes to the decision wich one to buy.. I would prefer 100Hps more for 5 - 10 thousands euros less...
The 5-series is my Favorite BMW series! I'm not sure about the style though, the last one was different and that is what made it beautiful and distinct even though in the beginnning it was severly criticized it ended up being a success! The styling just seems out of place here it isn't leading edge or different like the past few generations of the 5-series. It is dull but I'm sure when I see this in person it will grow on me.
I'm sure this car will serve its purpose just fine, but it just isn't BMW's flare anymore. They seem to only crank out white-collared, businessmen cars with space for your briefcase and Starbucks only. These cars just wont be remembered or as revered as some their older cars are, i.e.: M1, M3 e30, or even the 850 CSi. All I ask is for them to create something with the "passion" they used to have; not just updating fascia's every year.
As soon as you have a chance to drive the new 5 Series you'll take your words back. Don't forget that it's a family car so it has to be comfortable and spacious. But anyway no automobile comes even close to the 5 Series in terms of performance.
I like the looks of the New A6 a little more, but with the M Sport package the 5er gets the edge. Mercedes 5 series looks great except for the rear. The Jag XF beats them all on looks IMO.

I'm sure it's a great car, but it looks too... milquetoast. It 'blends in' now. It doesn't stand out or strike me as sporty. It's 'safe'.
The tail lights look like those of an old Infiniti G. I don't want my Bimmer to look like a Japanese car, much less an old one.
As for the video - I loved the ending sequence & music. Well done.
