@DemonikProduktions Hey :-). The only purpose is that this way there's a little less discoloration compared to doing it without clipping the dodge & burn layer.
@DemonikProduktions I actually wouldn't recommend it. The thing is, Linear Light works a lot harsher and has a different curve than Soft Light, so what looks good with your SL layers will probably look really bad when clipped to a LL layer. So if you want to use it (test it first if it's any beneficial for your workflow), try to use it from the beginning, not in the middle or end of the process.
@DemonikProduktions Actually curves probably won't work either. The thing is, when clipping to the high pass layer, you're mainly working with gray, not full range.
Since LL is pretty much an additional blend mode (C=B+2*A-1), clipping lighting curves to your LL will not only lighten the areas you chose in curves, but the whole range. Also you'll have to halve the opacity of the curves, but probably only the midtones will look good.
@DemonikProduktions Same with darkening curves of course. Since you can't really tell the curves to work with midtones only, it'll darken highlights, midtones and shadows pretty much the same, which is in most cases not what we want.
@DemonikProduktions Actually it doesn't need to be filled with 50% gray, but yes, it's just a new layer in "Soft Light" mode on which you paint with black and white to darken and lighten just like you do with your curves.
Great video! Sometimes hard to understand for me Why you do it and how you know all these things, because I've never worked with this technique before. Thank you so much for sharing! Danke Schön!
@AssiieJj If you can tell me which parts you don't fully understand, I can try to dig up a few links with further explanations or maybe create another video addressing them :-).
@jonaswtuts I know why you do the Purple but I'm like, how does he know to use purple and the green colors?... When you're doing the dodge and burn you are doing the white for making the darker 'spots' lighter and black for darken the light spots to get a more smooth face?
@AssiieJj Actually I don't paint with green and purple, I just shift the hue and exaggerate the differences. You might want to check out my "Supporting Layers" tutorial for this.
Yes, white lightens, black darkens. I also did a video "Principles of dodge & burn" that might help you here.
@jonaswtuts Yes I understand you don't paint with the Green and Purple but you use the 'green and purple' for the Hue and such.. Do you have more techniques or is this the famous one ;) ? I have a website from someone who is retouching pictures, maybe you know her technique and you might can help me because I'm dying to knowww!!
@AssiieJj Of course I have more techniques, but you need to know what you need in, otherwise you can't put them fully to use ;-).
Just check out my other videos, there's plenty of English videos with some of my techniques here. And if you need further help, you can always write me a message :-).
This is perfect!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I can't wait to get to work with the new techniques I've learned from you.
I noticed you clipped the D/B layers into the high layer, what advantage does this give you? Is this similar to clipping a D/B curve network in to a luminosity layer, so from lobster or the lightness channel from LAB.
One thing I noticed while retouching is that as you increase or decrease luminosity with your Soft Light layer, the saturation values keep changing, because the minimum and maximum values drift apart. Now with the Linear Light method, this effect is by far not that harsh which I like better (since I like to control each component separately).
The hue changes a little less as well although that was not the main reason for this approach.
I really appreciate you uploading such an advanced and high quality demonstration. I barely even search youtube for tutorials anymore as most seem to be aimed at beginner/intermediate level and I find myself sitting and skipping through so much repeat information before I come across something new. With your videos it's quite the opposite. There's so much insight and brilliant new ways to approach familiar tasks that I'm practically giddy with excitement when I see you've released something new.
If YouTube wouldn't throw errors at me all the time, I'd have already uploaded another video that you might find somewhat interesting (it's a separation between colors and luminosity in RGB - somewhat similar to LAB mode).
After a while of having the same limit as everyone else, YouTube emailed me, that I could now upload longer videos. So I didn't do anything special, just watch out for Copyright and wait for the mail ;-).
Hey! Great video but what is the purpose of having the Dodge & Burn layer clipped to the high layer?

Can I clip the layer(s)after I've already created them as my layers are in an action?

But what if my DB layers are not SL? I have them set as curves.

The SL layer is a 50% grey fill right?

interesting workflow but the result looks a bit artificial...maybe because I dislike extreme retouched beauty photography ;) not your fault!
Great job!

Also how are you able to upload such a long video that isn't a rental? Did youtube change their limitations?

Hi Jonas,
A quick comment before I even start watching. I've been waiting to see you working in realtime. Thanks for sharing !
Now... let's watch these 'separations' of yours. Excited to learn something new (hopefully) !
Tom.
