Justin is a very humble young man for one with such enormous talent. He does not "show off his chops." He plays his best each time he sits behind the set. Listen to him. He is contributing to the music.
I think this kid definitely has chops, and he also has his own style, but he's somewhat lacking in musicality (at least when he solos). However, he is only 19 and has plenty of time to improve. If he could just learn to think more in terms of playing for the music and less for showing off chops, I think it is very possible that this kid could become one of the next great drummers for the future.
lol every time i start to feel good about my playing abilities i just type "justin faulkner" into youtube and it reminds me that i aint shit! I love watching this kid play because not only is it humbling, but it motivates me to practice more.
this is why I hate youtubers...I put my vids on FB...this dude is crazy nice...how many young guys in this generation do you see playing jazz like that...but everybody got something negative to say...he's probably way better than any of you negative people commenting on here will ever be
i got to north carolina central university, and branford is alway out here, just was talking to him the other day about justin, , the kid has energy branford said "justin dont know shit about jazz when he joined the band, he had a lil background and he was hungry, i gave him a shit load of music and he rn with it"! So all you guys talk crap about justin, get a hobby rather than being on youtube! fail 9000
I've been watching the calendar for Branford's quartet for over ten years and was completely bummed out when I heard Tain was gone. This vid has me excited again. Justin has incredible technique, and although he's no Tain and I don't know if he LISTENS as well as Tain, I'm excited to see that turbo-charged energy remains in Branford's group. I'll be at the next show.
If Branford's looking at the future for his group, he may have found it. We'll see.
yo chill out justin is only 18 the young boi been playin for a good one and got lessons from one of the legendary drummers in the world (Craig Mclver)
Is it just me or is there something artless about Brandford cracking open a bottle of water in front of a giant screensaver while someone's doing a solo.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I was always down with Miles and Coltrane, who had something mystical about them on stage. Branford can play the horn. I've seen him. He blew me away. Just jazz isn't quite as cool as it was. The stage to me is romantic; it's not just about music; it's a stage.
That's cool. I do watch. Live music is a mix of an audio and visual experience... Watch any video of Miles, and then try to imagine him doing the same thing. He just had a better presence on stage IMO. (I'm only using him as en example there are plenty of other people I could say the same about).
Just to add... can you imagine a concert pianist coming on with a bottle of water, putting it on top of the piano and swigging from it? Something just not cool about it for me. But then modern jazz isn't really very cool anymore either. It's not dead, it just smells funny - Zappa
There was once a chamber ensemble struggling to learn a Frank Zappa piece for an upcoming concert. Zappa told them he would not allow them to perform the piece if they were only going to butcher it. He offered to let them lip-sync to soundtracks he would supply, allowing them to concentrate on what is truly most important to musicians - looking good on stage.
Zappa said he doesn't care what his musicians do onstage at all, as long as the notes are right. Miles was more pretentious than Branford
Why's he wearing a suit then? ... Jimi Hendrix - People listen with their eyes... Why did Zappa get orchestras to dress in certain ways?... Because it matters. People can get all purist
another thing, Justin could be going through a period of "hazing" from the other guys in the band. The first tour I saw with Joey Calderazzo playing with Branford, Calderazzo was not playing at all on many of the tunes. Maybe you gotta earn your spot with this band? Worked just fine so far.
@nateo5 Justin Faulkner has big shoes to fill in Branford's band. You don't think the old guys are teasing the crap out of the young kid on the road? Think again....
@flybynight420 what do you mean by artless? Uncool? Or not respectful? Because miles used to walk away talk, and smoke with people during others solos. That was "cool", but maybe not respectful
Interesting comments Re tain and Justin Faulkner. I see them as comparable artists as different stages in their careers. Don't forget tain was a prodigy who mastered classical percussion at an early age as well. I think a little "age bias" creeps into our judgment, but remember Tain in the early '80s - spectacular.
Why do people always try to compare, dude just enjoy the fucking video, justin is a beast, watts is a beast! ????? Move the fuck on........... jeezzz guys bunch of homo's in here
Just enjoy the music. Justin is a force of nature and he is just starting his career. I was there and saw it. Beautiful music. Since that day I become a huge fan of Branford and his crew.
If you want to talk about hands, Dennis Chambers has much better chops than either 'Tain or Justin. In the end, there is much more to drumming than chops and speed. It should be about MUSIC, right? That being said, I think Justin sounds great, but I'd still rather listen to 'Tain (or a 17-year-old Tony Williams for that matter)!
I disagree. On a technical level Faulkner doesn't have better hands then Tain. The guy is 18 and is just starting his career. Tain is 50 and has a very long list of people that he played with. So in my opinion the comparison between Tain and Faukner doesn't add up. Tain was a classical percussionist before he went to Berklee and in my opinion, Tain is now on his musical top.
