Dream Theater's pinnacle in their career... right before they switched labels and things changed. It's almost heartbreaking just to watch, knowing that it's not going to be the same anymore.
@chaveznieves Very very VERY true. Atlantic was not very nice to them at all, and Roadrunner definitely brought them serious exposition to the world and to many metal fans... but I will admit, something about DT's perseverance while being with Atlantic definitely made their efforts after "Falling into Infinity" completely epic. Them proving AtCo wrong was probably their most awesome work, in my opinion.
and i really don't feel like theyre regressing with their new label. the fact that they are with road runner has not contributed to their music at all. in fact, road runner has nothing to do with the albums at all untill they are completely finished and DT says here you go, release it. the fact that their music has gotten heavier is a result in their personal choices and tastes. i, for one, totally embrace this change, and i'm loving it. i enjoy the new with the old equally
@chaveznieves But I am a bit scared to find out how DT's gonna sound like without Portnoy. It seemed like him and Petrucci called the shots most of the time when it came to arranging the albums.
but in terms of music writing, it was all collective, and everyone had a say
in terms of leadership, petrucci definitely becomes the new face of the band, and i think rudess will step in as co-leader
and quite frankly, i don't think the music will suffer. if anything, the music will start to revert back a bit to their older style, because portnoy was by far the biggest metalhead of the group, so with that gone, i think it'll sound like the old stuff
@chaveznieves actually all their albums from images and words were produced by Petrucci and Portnoy. This to avoid any pressures from discographic companies that usually put on the artists a big pressure. They have as well a contract with Roadrunner, but it is mainly for the world wide distribution of their albums...the company has no say on Dream Theater's musical products.
@chaveznieves i'm not complaining about what you said, it is your opinion. I am saying a fact: all their albums after Images and Words were produced by Portnoy and Petrucci. :D
@bowlingfor1 You are stating extremely incorrect "facts"....
"Awake" was produced John Purdell and Duane Baron
"A Change Of Seasons" was produced by David Prater and Dream Theater as a whole
"Falling Into Infinity" was produced by Kevin Shirley with very little input from the band.
It wasn't until after Falling into Infinity that Portnoy and Petrucci started producing everything. Don't believe me? Look on the back of those albums at the producers listed.
from 3:13 on they REALLY crank up the tempo and i've always wondered why. now i know why and there are 2 reasons; first they exceeded their time window and for every additional minute in radio city music hall you gotta pay like 10000 dollars. they ended up having to pay 30000 and if they hadn't played metropolis that fast maybe it would've been like 40k. and second they are freakin dream theater, they can play any song at least twice as fast.
The only thing that would have made this beyond perfect is if they turned up Myung for the show. It's kind of hard to hear that amazing bass solo. Other than that it's the most incredible concert I've seen.
Ok, this might be an unpopular viewpoint, but did anybody else think that the majority of lyrics in metropolis pt.2 were absolutely horrendous? Horrible and crowbarred rhymes, 6 words followed by 3, then by 6 again, not used for emphasis, but apparently for no reason at all, et cetera et cetera.
@STorpedo nope, didn' even kinda think that once. I thought it was very good. The lyrics for this album aren't traditional anyways. It's a hypnosis session, followed by someone exploring their own mind
@AgileCow I didn't either until I wanted to understand what the hell James LaBrie was actually singing, and oh my god was it terrible. I'm not a big poetry nut, so I'm leaving this up to question, but jesus, it's like they wrote everything in a single day. Just look at the first couple of lines in Beyond this Life; three sentence structures followed by 4, for no reason, the 4th paragraph's final line doesn't even rhyme, sounding out of place with the rest of the rhymes. Yeesh, I could go on.
@STorpedo Im surprised you're not saying that about this song. Portnoy said that this particular song was about nothing. The real chore was to write lyrics for metropolis part 2 to kind of morph it with this, and I think the lyrics are great and you can actually understand the story. Live, well, labrie isnt the best at singing high notes and emulating words at the same time, but he is DT's voice, and will always be it.
@panamanian911 Well, I'm glad that you're able to enjoy the lyrics, but I'd still disagree about them being great. The one thing that DT always pulls off great are the chorus lyrics, imo, but everything else's typically borderline 'good enough'; it's fairly simple to tell a story, you can be pretty obvious about it, the hard and creatively 'fruitful' part is making them flow, which, I hate to say, I believe DT falls short off on more than one occasion. Got no prob with LaBrie though.
@abhimuscat Except in this case it's set to music, and even if it were not, I'm sure you'll agree that the actual reasoning for framing it in such a convoluted structure is lackluster, there's nothing actually gained in the majority of lyrical mishaps except for a finished sentence which was poorly implemented.
@STorpedo Or, rather, a finished sentence which surely could've been made concise and relatively succinct given more time and effort, a finished sentence which wouldn't need to sound at odds to the rest of the lyrical landscape to get it's point across.
I've a question, listen carefully to 2:54, 2:56. 'Mike Portnoy anthology - volume one' says that the time signature is 19/16, but I think it's 10/8. Does anybody knows?
