  • Probably one of the best ones I've heard yet :)

  • We are doing a minimalism composition at school and mine is so bad! lol

  • What notes are being used in the first motif

  • What software do you use? We are using cubase and it's so confusing x(

  • Omg, this is amazing!! so much better than mine! :O

  • This is reaaally goood! We use a Logic software on Macs at school, and I've got to begin my second composition tomorrow! (My first was live guitar, a song I wrote, which is on my channel by the way.. ;) ) and I was planning to do minimalism - after hearing this, I will definitely be giving it a try!

    Becca x

  • Great Composition, what instruments were used?

  • What kind of composition program did you use for this? I'm dying to know!

  • amazzinng :D

  • I'm taking GCSE music now, this sounds like a pretty cool piece of work

  • I just realised the meaning of the picture! haha

  • The beginning sounds somewhat like the beginning of the Portal 2 trailer. That's a good thing, and I actually really enjoyed listening to it. Nice work! Can you check mine out and see what you think of it?

  • Interesting... I always wanted to learn more about minimalsm, but even after I studied it I didn't always understand completely.

I'm a composer, and you'e also welcome to check my youtube channel.

  • I think I'm the only person to post a composition with area of study as music in Wales. Nobody does it! Any chance I could get some feedback guys? I would

    Be very appreciative. -3

  • Right, I'm sorry. This piece is good, but in my opinion minimalism is easy. It's just adding one instrument on top of another. Who composed a serialism/expressionism piece? I did and the amount of work going into it is ridiculous, with all the note rows, hexachords, chromaticism. It is a much more challenging task.

  • lol how unfair! I was only allowed to use 4 of the same instrument!

  • Mines better

  • Tubular bells much? I think so...

  • This is amazing! I'm trying to do this but I literally have no idea how to do this!? I'm using sibelius. Got any tips on how to make mine as amazing as this?! x

  • This is great, well done. What software did you use?

  • Very good, i've just got full marks on my compositions. What is the difference between a composition and this?

  • Minimalism or not, this is an incredible piece of music. You should be very proud, and I would not be surprised if musical composition was a future career path for you.

  • This is really nice. Kudos.

  • What instruments did you include in this piece? Btw nice job, really enjoyed listening to this piece.

    Sophie :)

  • this is so much better than mine! i honestly hate mine though, even though it's not finished, what mark did you get? i got 25 :')

  • I love the idea at the start.

    development is cool also.

    good piece of minimalism mate

  • sounds kinda like tubular bells, especially at the start :) good job

  • This is REALLY good well done.

  • This sound more like maximalism

  • Quite good considering I'm shite at composing!!!!!!

  • someone please help me...im trying to do a minimalist piece, the deadline is 3 weeks time and i have nothing! :(

  • never heard minimalism before but it sounds nice and pure.really good.

  • im doing mine at the moment and i cant seem to get it gooood agh what am i going to do? :/ btw this is great :D

  • ive heard one exactly like this someone did at my school lol... way better than mine anyway

  • hey man, nice one! ahh i remember my gcse composition. it was wack. anyway im a young post-minimalist composer, id really appreciate it if you could check out my stuff. trying to get rich and all that... jokes.

    happy listening.

  • @AnimeFan0910 cheers dude !!

  • It's gon' rain!

  • this has been the best student-composed minimalism piece ive heard - smooth phase shifting and synthesized qualities

  • Great! I've just done GCSE Music too! Check out some of my other compositions on my channel!

  • Wow finally someon who understands minimalism and what it is suppost to be. Thanks for this.

  • it's funny how the score for the picture in this video is theoretically wrong. i don't know any time signature with three and a half beats lol

  • @MissingAmongPeople no its not really, because if the score shown is the beginning of the piece (as is suggested by the clef being shown) then the first bar is most likely an upbeat, in which case the bar can contain as many beats the composer chooses.

  • @333cale True, but have you ever seen three and a half up beats - leaving 1 eighth to be added at the end?

Ok, so it's not definitely wrong but it is more than likely an error.

  • @333cale I know that's a possibility and there is no barline so we can ponder it all day and never get an answer - all I can say is that I would have finished the bar.

  • this has really helped me understand what minimalism sounds like...i have an exam tomorrow on it...you are a life saver! thank you x

  • Really helpful and very creative. I'm just going into my 2nd year of the gcse (edexel) and personally I absolutely hate it :-/ but that's gcses for you watered down shit that you have to go through before you can actually start learning something interesting...yeah anyway that's kinda off topic - I was struggling with this and was getting pretty fed up with Sibelius but this has helped just put some basic ideas in my head, thanks.

  • oh yes, I'm assuming you used digital software for this. What did you use? Basic midi software - Garageband? I mean there are at least 3 lines of counterpoint in this, it's astonishing for a GCSE in music

  • You made this for a GCSE, hmmmm, I'm impressed with the complexity. Just what subjects do you study for GCSE level music if you don't mind my asking?

  • nice! i'm guessing you got a pretty good grade for this?

check out some of my pieces, they're for my gcse c/w aswell, tell me what you think :)

  • I can definitely hear your inspiration - it's good!

  • wow this is amazing :)

  • minimalism normally sounds dire and just like a load of noise!

this is actually really good, great use of all the features layering and blah.

really helped me revise for GCSE!

  • hi, is there any chance you could send me a score for this piece, so i can see what notes are being played and what lengths they are? That would be much appreciated. Thankyou

  • @IronMaidenMax13 hmmmm, trying to steal from a schoolboy ey? low!

  • The bass riff is Feeling Good by Nina SImone ¬¬

  • pro

  • does this have a name? its really good!

  • wow this really good :) i'm did minimalism for my area of study 2 composition, but yours is way better :)

  • YOu have real talent man- wow!

  • I really like this! It reminds me of something from Tyrian...if anyone has ever played that game. In other words, it's very good. =]

  • Amazing! I'm doing a minimalist piece for my second composition [=

  • what grade did you get??

  • Fruity loops is the easiest thing to make Minimalism peices on :P

  • what notes make up the ostinato?

  • Which software did you use?

  • Nice bit of phase shifting there :P

  • exam tomorrow!!!

  • this is very smilar to tubular bells. its good though, you did a good job

  • i had to do this to for gcse

  • my teacher played this is our music lesson :L what program did you use for it ?

  • I think it's Sibelius

  • sounds like it :P god mine will neva sound this good....

  • nice

  • Quite good

  • what system did you use? Serbelius or Cubase?

  • It's Sibelius...

  • I've just finished mine and I am impressed. Hoping to put it on YouTube soon.

  • This is pretty cool and good, I'm just about to start to put together a minimalist tune for my composition and even if mine is half as good as this I shall be incredibly proud.

  • amazing! wat grade did you get?xx.

  • meh

  • Sounds more like a blues or a pop song than a minimalist piece.

  • Yes. And although this piece share certain features of the minimalist movement, it unfortunately also feature some elements that puts it in the category of popular music.

  • Nice.. wat grade did u get for this????????????

  • this is great, my music teacher showed us this piece, he said if he was grading it he'd give this full marks or something like that

personally, i think it would've been better if it just ended at 3:44

  • @thrilllex Yeahh, i agree

  • that was great

  • beautiful

  • heyy... like the piece .... can some ppl look at the two minamilist compositions on mine?.... one is train journey witch is the 1 i entered and the other im still working on...lol... and is called my composition.....thx :)...lol

  • WonderfuL.

    :))

[OH duN WORRY..m not gonna steal ur music]

    ;)

  • this is fantatic, my minimalist piece is soo, short for 1 and, compared to this I dislike it!

  • wonderful.

  • Nice, can you guys listen to my composition in my channel? Tell me what you think!

  • Software?

  • what grade did this get?

  • Calm GCSE music = Clint Mansell, The Fountain

  • Glassish is always good.

  • Searching youtube for some minimalist music to prepare for the exam 2moro, and what do i come across... Rob's minimalist piece! so i see your now promoting yourself Mr. Greig!?

    Nico =]

  • You must be the first person I know who has found this Nico :-)

Promoting myself? Well I like to think this can be of help to somebody somewhere...

  • thnxs it does help, its good, i was thinking befor i read the info it sounds like tubular bells =)

  • @robgreig I like to say thank you for this, it's a big help to my exam.

    Thank you!!

  • I Really liked writing my Minimalist Composition, it can be fun, i wrote it with 3 electric guitars playing a riff, there are phase-shifts and octaves used in it, it got an A*, i may upload it if my Music teacher gives them to me on a disc that actually works!

  • I love this! All my compositions I did at school had minimalist influences too :) I love Philip Glass atm! I really like this :) I'm actualy trying to work out how to upload my compositions on here atm too...x

  • Wow. Mine sounds like crap now lol. What grade did you get for this?

  • Comment removed

  • its realy an interesting sound that minimalism creates almost futuristic but not !

  • is this on sibeleous?

  • sibelius on prints out scores. i think this is on logic pro

  • No it is Sibelius. It does the score and the recording.

  • how the hell yoou get these sounds on sibelius!

    It usually sounds awful! haha

  • @robgreig did you conver the sibelius file into a different mp3 file, if so can you say how? thanks =)

  • i really want to do minimalism - would you say its a good idea?

  • If you want to do it then go for it. I tend to find compositions I enjoy producing end up sounding a lot better than ones I don't.

  • minimalism is boring to compose and i still haven't finished it! I liked composing the march i did for the other section though :D

  • its similar but has a couple diff notes and diff rhythm - I'd doubt you loosing any marks for that

  • could you come listen to my AOS 1 Comp and tell me what you think please =D

  • Yes Definat similarity To feeling good. Im not sure what the rules are on plagerism. and how they catch people out. Im sure this pease wont qualify for Plagerism. Just it is soo easy to cheat on such a task. I wonder how people get caught.

  • bass line at start sounds similar to feelin good

  • This is a fantastic piece of work...I wish I had the patience to be able to sit down and compose some great music like this =)

  • Why do everyone do minimalism? Good song =] Although im sorry to say I don't like minimalism. Its to repetative. But that's the main idea =] Sounds like you've used metamorphasis. But I can't hear and phase shifting or layering =[

  • Oh my goodness, this is so much better than mine. What was your brief? Mine was some crappy thing about a massage parlour...

  • We got to write our own brief. I made it "To compose a piece of minimalist music." Nice and simple :-)

  • I'm doing my GCSE Minimalism piece for Edexcel at the moment. I am finding it very difficult; how on earth did you come up with an idea to build on? This is fantastic.

  • Im doing Minimalism in music gcse at the moment. I think it sounds a lot like theres a sense of urgency in lots of minimalst pieces, such as "In C".

  • that is well better then mine!!! it sound good for minimulism!!!!!!!!!!

  • currently doing a minimalism composition for my music gcse course.

found this really good and could feel how it was inspired by tubular bells. very well done.

  • EXCELLIENT 11 out of 10 i am currently doing GCSE Music studying Area of study 2 a great area

  • Once upon a time there was a guy named (insert Name) and he LOST THE GAME! the end

  • lolz im meant to be doing my minimalism coursework at the moment

  • really really ........... really good

  • hey this is awesome man, i did minimalism too but for the ocr board so its shorter, mines also inspired by tubular bells but doesnt sound quite as massive as this! our sibelius at school sounds like shit

  • ohh and just to add more questions what tempo? :)

  • Lol, if you must know...

It is in the key of Em

    And tempo is 150bpm

  • fast...

I'm thinking of doing GCSE in music... Recommended?

  • Definatly! lots of practical and as long as your group isn't a bunch of retards, go for it.

  • if u are playing an instrument, yes,by all means DO take music or u will regret it later, i have takenk music in the last minute and i would regret if i wouldnt

  • oskar, is gay hahahahahahahahaha

Once upon a time there was a guy named (insert Name) and he LOST THE GAME! the end

  • argh I lost the game! HOW DARE YOU! (bogan)

  • Em ftw

  • Its really good!! what key is this in? cause it sounds really effective and fits the style of music really well!

How long did it take you to compose fully?

    x

  • im doing GSCE coursewrk on minimalism now ! thanks for uploading this it really helped. i love the repetition !

  • My gosh, that's incredible

I'm not surprised you got full marks! Well done :)

  • This piece is amazingly awsome :D

great job mate seriously thats wiked

errm im actually composing a similar piece influenced and inspired by tubular bells and its preeti damn good so far but i'd like to know what instruments ur using in this piece because i have tried to find em on sibelius but with no luck :(

    help me please

  • Fender Rhodes (An E. Piano, in Sibelius. Just chose it because it sounded good)

    Bass Guitar

    Piano

    Marimba

And then Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello

At the end there are timpani and cymbal parts, plus a bass drum that just plays crotchets.

    Glad you liked it :D

  • We have sibelius in our music lessons

  • wow its good =O

  • this is soo good!

    what instruments have you used?

is this the sibelius playing it?

if it is the intruments actually sound decent on your version :P

our ones at school are crap :/

    has it been marked yet?

    what did you get?

wow this comment is full of questions lol

    im just amazed

    x

  • Haha, thankyou :-D

It is played by Sibelius. You have to have the good sounds (not midi) installed - they may be installed but not enabled; it is something like Play > Playback Options (see if there are any options for Kontakt Player or anything similar).

Yes it has been marked, got 30/30.

Thank you, hope I have been helpful :-)

  • Great composition! I'm doing mine at the moment but mine's not very good. By the way what is your time signiture for your piece? I'm a bit confused :S

  • Thanks :D

    It is written in 7/4

  • i can spot the tubular bells influence

    well done man!

  • I am doing minimalism at the moment, but we don't have sibelius so i have to do it just on the piano myself, so i am hoping i wont get a crap grade. Any advice ?

  • I can't really give specific advice, other than keep experimenting with small phrases, ideas, chord sequences (pretty much anything) and when you find something you like take it and build on it.

If you are composing a solo piece for piano, I shouldn't think the composing method would be drastically different, although you would need to make sure you use the full potential of the instrument as you have less to work with overall.

  • good job, what software did you use?

  • Sibelius 5

  • heya has any1 got any advice on composing a sort of meaningful but happy funeral music? I am trying to find a sad key signature to put it in but I am not very good at that, then it is going to become happier. Does any1 have any advice?

  • acck. nice.

    i well cant compose...

  • Is serialism a good excuse to use very little effort producing it, because it sounds shit anyway? reply please.

  • Err, not really.

I haven't composed using the 12-tone method myself, but I don't think it is particularly easy. There is far more than simply choosing the notes - you have to consider instrumentation, texture, rhythm etc.

Although using a prime order (and then retrograde, inverted etc.) may make coming up with an initial idea easy, it is probably harder to bring it together to sound like a convincing piece of music in the end.

  • Hahaha, I guess it would be difficult to make it sound musically coherent... thanks.

  • you have any advice for someone whos is not going so well?

  • mines not going to well, i have about a week left to finish...what grade did you get?

  • Wow i have been trying so long to do my gcse minimalism, you are genius

  • nice music
