They were only able to hold on to certain portions of north india and occasionaly ventured into south india for looting and extortion. Fyi never generalise the foul practices of a bunch of laggards to that of the Hindus. Do that and you will find numerous instances in history where Hindus armies smashed mohameddan aggressors and made them tuck tail and run. For instance the arabs conquered persia within 17 years after mohammed's death but took them almost 300 years to secure a foothold in the NWFP, India, present day pakistan. The battle timelines which took place then and after will give the real picture.
