  • I love the outfit at 1.50

  • stylish. Edie's teeth are awesome.

  • I’m very taken with the outfit at 3:07. If something similar were to walk off a Paris runway, circa now, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

  • where do all those clothes come from? they never leave, no one ever comes there, the closets are full? we know they probably never did laundry.

  • They were both nuts!!One was a bitter old woman and the other a bi polar nut.

  • The thing I love most about little Edie is the fact that she is so honest and unapologetic about who she is . I think she is awesome, and I think she would have been a fabulous clothing designer, anyone who can whip up all those " costumes" from bathing suits, old sweaters, and God knows what else, and the headdresses! I think she was truly talented in an off beat, eclectic kind of way. I love her, hope she and her Mother are at peace

  • @nicksmommyforever It really breaks my heart that little Edie never had her dreams come true. & Never found true love. Spending 80% of her life trapped in the Grey Gardens estate. Becoming a prisoner of her loving; but BATSHIT "Yea I said it" Batshit insane mother. & I deeply believe if Little Edie was a bit more independently stronger, she could have become a actress just as successful as Audrey Hepburn or Betty Davis in her own way. She really was a star, Shame only few people saw that R.I.P

  • Little Edie is a star. Love her.

  • Does anyone know the name of this song? It s really beautiful!!

  • @slipperking121 It's called "I Dream Too Much" and sung by countless people. This version is Hildegarde so just do a search here and voila.

  • Go Eadies! :)

  • I saw this when I was 20. I thought Edie was old. I am 56 and I think she looks young - nice skin and great teeth. Funny how time changes one's perspective.

  • life goes too quickly,i am now become ''little edie',SAW THE FILM YRS AGO.then dad got sick, mom and i tried to make his last years the best.then i found she was getting dementia, now i like edie take care of her, alone, people rarely come visit,we create our dream worlds.i never thought i would ever become like edie, our loved ones are THE ONLY THINGS WORTHY IN THIS LIFE,WHEN THEY'RE GONE,THEY'RE GONE FOREVER.if i couldn't laugh and enjoy music like edie does,i'd go mad

  • did a search for little edie's pics, omg! she was breathtakingly beautiful! in some pics, she even looked a lot like (a much prettier version of) drew barrymore. :) great casting coup!

  • I feel so bad for L.E. She was so beautiful, spunky, and talented, but she didn't get her shot (bec. according to the movie, anyway--was that part accurate?), she was too upset because of her affair with that married man. At least she found fame through the documentaries, and the movie with Drew Barrymore. BTW, did u know that L.E. had said she wanted Ethel Barrymore to play her, in a movie? (Though Ethel had passed away by then, maybe L.E. didn't know.)Cool, huh?

  • O I love this vid,, one of the best depiction of the very eccentric Edies,,, I love it,, I find them soooo interesting great story,, sad too at times but it has so much joy an wonderment theatrics drama style an true style it's just a perfect story I was so happy they turned it into a movie it was fantastic!:)

  • Put the damn thing on!

  • Love lil Edie's sense of style!

  • i think lil edie was more trapped in time then ahead of her time darling but still, yes she did have a fantastic and creative sense of fashion either way... long live lil edie!

  • In a fashion sense, Lil Edie was way ahead of her time!!! My god those dresses are beautiful!

  • Little Edie was still built like a damn brickhouse. lmao....did she know at the time of her death that she became a fashion icon?

  • Be sure to watch Cadillac Kimberly. She keeps it 100.

  • "Don't get excited, just put the damn thing on!" I love these two women...

  • @unterland love it! :)

  • wow, she had style, and she was actually beautiful. it must be an utter catastrophe for woman to loose her hair... she had a hard life..

  • This is where Lady GaGa gets her ideas for costumes ..I'm sure of it

  • Grey Gardens actual footage

  • Anyone know where Little Edie was leaving at 2:34 ?

  • @hilljayne i believe it was church

  • Who were they? What's this about?I know that they were related to kennedys wife but whats so special about theM/I'm not being a douche I'm interested in why people are so taken with them.

  • @SteamEqualsFAIL you have to watch the whole documentary to see for yourself. It's 2 high society women who basically lived like rats in their old house because they had no money anymore. I think it's interesting because the young one is a hell of a character in her own right. And the documentary is very well done. They're both very entertaining!

  • @SteamEqualsFAIL

Go to hulu.com and look at Grey Gardens and The Beales of Grey Gardens. You can view both documentaries for free. My sister kept bugging me to watch them and it took me forever to do it.....welllllllll the first time I was completely hooked to say the least..

We also have a group on Yahoo groups called Grey Gardens. That's where all of the Be & Le's hand out ha!

LE's birthday is tomorrow 11/7 and most of us are digging out our best Edie costume & having a party in her honor!

  • Two eccentric little ladies :)

  • I am sure Drew Barrymore is great in the new film of Grey Gardens, but everytime I see this I just wish Toni Collette had been chosen...she was born to play her!

  • @janknuckey: They could always re-do the movie... I would love to know what happened to Little Edie's life after she left Grey Gardens, I mean I've read things but a movie would be interesting. I will say that Little Edie and her mother still fascinate me and they've been gone a while. I guess because beyond the physical, i.e. the trash and squalor, their relationship resonates, on some level, with all mothers and daughters.

  • @janknuckey I never thought of that, but now that you mention it, she would have made a marvellous Edie! She can play any character -- very broad range -- and I can see how that would have perhaps been much better, though I admire Drew Barrymore very much --

  • @janknuckey Wow good call. Seriously!

  • little edie had such great style

  • the most fabulous woman.. i'm in love!

  • @futuristfood me too

  • What a fashionista!

  • Little Edie was and is a beautiful creature.

  • :) a little lovely world of there own :) sad

  • The song is sad and beautiful; just as the tho characters.

  • @escritormx yes, the song's perfect for the montage. i'll cry if i listen to it too much...so i shouldn't listen to it too much.

  • A couple of bloody nut cases the pair of them

  • she had amazing inner glamour

"you cannot guess what loveliness belongs to you"

  • Not bad at all for 55. Her teeth, her skin, her figure - all very good. I see that now. She probably had no dental care.

  • she looks like a bad drag queen

  • This is like watching a scene from a psy ward.they never ever talk about anyone or thing but themselves.

  • love the clip :) wanted to but this on DVD but can't seem to find it on region 2. what amazes me with all these costume changes is where did Little Edie keep all her clothes?? they certainly don't look like they are covered in cat pee or dirty...so who did all the washing & where did she store all her outfits in that house???

  • She was my neighbor in Florida for two weeks in 1998, and though I didn't know her identity for the first week, I was convinced destiny had thrust us together because my aunt, who worked on the atomic bomb and was an art dealer was as wonderfully eccentric as Edie; if only I had recorded Vilma and her sister; there was more cussing; more money;however. I hated Florida and within a month was in Prague. I saw her swim; and at the time I had no suspicion that she had suffered want.

  • is that big edie singing this

  • freaks mental illness

  • is that big edie singing?

  • Just priceless...I fell in love with them both when I saw the documentary.

  • the worst thing that can happen to a woman is to suffer from alopecia .. she always keep a great spirit ... she was lovely

  • Little Edie was one of the most precious human beings. She didn't let alopecia, poverty, or isolaton break her spirit. She lived life as a true individual and is an inspiration to so many. Many fashion designers were and still are inspired by her.

  • ah its just fabulous,I love them, everytime i watch grey gardens i dont want it to end,Its like losing two old friends ,beautiful women ,little edie, couldnt i just spend all my days with her,God rest their souls xxx

  • a true mother daughter relationship

  • Comment removed

  • I love this video. Little Edie is just so endearing.

  • i love everyones comments. i just love all the interest. i just want to say that, i feel protective of her.

  • I felt sorry for little Edie who must have harbored a lot of resentment toward her mother, even though she didn't show it. Big Edie seemed selfish in manipulating little Edie to stay there with her just because she was too pig headed to leave.

  • i love the song.

  • @SundanceCrave yes, what a beautiful song.

  • @SundanceCrave so do i.

  • Big Edie is not in this one as much as the original documentary, it's seems to be just Little Edie and her costumes and singing..the original was better

  • Little Edie was a very attractive woman. She is around 56 in this documentary and still had a fantastic figure.

  • Little Edie seems very youthful for her age. Not just immature, but youthful.

  • To tell the truth if I had a house in the east hamptons that i didn't have to pay a mortgage on, I'd turn into my own kind of Edie and I think it would just lovely. It would be pleasant to live there, go to the beach, and do as one wanted without having to knock your head against all the brick walls of the world.

  • wouldnt it of been so amazing to have met these fantastic women....

  • Right on !! Absolutely lovely !! I would jump on it in a heartbeat...Of course, I would probably complain about all of it as chronically as Little E did, although I would make a stronger effort to keep the animal problem under control.

  • @sisalrug

I feel like bursting into tears in response to what you said! Oh that life could be that simple.... and that wonderful .... I look into the Beales' house and I could be in the Gatsby mansion - why was I born in the wrong era.....?

  • @sisalrug Hmmm, So 38 people think eating cat food, shitting in a can and living on past achievments is so much better than moving forward in life. One persons brickwall is anothers passage way.

  • Wonderful, one of the best parts of the DVD. I think little edie did dream too much alone, but at least she seemed content. Her and big edie may have lived "strange" to us but I give them kudos for doing what they chose. And thank them for letting us peek at their lives.

  • "Put the damn thing on" haha.

  • Wow. I was watching the HBO film just now. I definitely would like to see the DVD. I have a slight fascination with these two women.

  • why did she always have her head covered?

  • She lost her hair when she was younger, due to alopecia.

  • @amy1827 she suffered of alopecia

  • what was the deseas that little edie had?

  • Nice Jerome Kern song interpreted and sung beautifully by the incomparable Hildegarde.

  • they're a bit out of touch with reality but they seem satisfied enough in the crazy little world they've created for themselves =)

  • They don't seem sad to me. You are being judgemental and cloneish.

  • I didn't say they seem sad. You just read sight words..right? I said it is sad. I said they were as crazy as bedbugs, that is sad to me.........not to them.

  • Perhaps I did sorry.

  • The truth is that it is sad. And noble. And exhilarating. And completely original. And all of those things can coexist. It's only the clones that think otherwise. So you are both right.

  • much more sad is someone like you who can't see through to their dignity

  • well put

  • Little Edie was just having fun - bless her heart - some people forget how to actually have fun and indulge themselves - being all alone those years maybe preserved her sense of fun/whimsy.

  • i also found myself with a fascination of these two women after watching the movie, and try and read all i can about them, it is sad...

  • could you put up the whole thing..pretty please? :)

  • I think Little Edie got robbed!!

  • I think it's because they have such a connection...we allllll want!! I have it too!

  • That is just taken straight from the new movie that was made called "the Beales of grey gardens" it is on DVD! Fantastic

  • What song is that while edie is posing for the camera? It's nice.

  • The most fashion foward Godess Ive ever seen, I didn't know could exist:) Those very fitted cardigans were so ahead of the times!!! They are great!!! She was such a fashionista genius!!!! Edie, I luv and miss u evry day!!! ur my inspiration<3<3<3<3<3

  • I love this! That Big Edie was such a bully, but cute. Why didn't Little Edie ever get a wig?

  • 2;::carlyisagangster::::Cuz when she would stress she lost her hair I guess it neva looked right after the fact!!

Orignal comment::-I do think if she was still alive and well she would be a great fashion designer!!

  • I don't mean to be rude or anything.

But why does she cover her head??

    Edie that is.

  • Little Edie has Alopecia and she has lost her hair, therefore she always wears a head scarf or something similar on her head to cover it.

  • Thank You.

  • hair loss.

  • I believe she had hair loss when she was younger, maybe even in her 20's...around the time she had to move back to Grey Gardens.

  • Yes, she did lose a lot earlier in life. I think I read somewhere it first happened when she was 18, but then it all grew back. However, the doctor told her even though that would happen, it would eventually all fall out again. So she she always knew it would happen and when it finally did, she began wearing her fabulous covers. She was great!

  • Little Edie had alopecia, so her hair had all fallen out due to stress. That's why she is never seen without a scarf.

  • she had a rare skin disease that caused all her hair to fall out due to stress.

  • She wanted to be a star and now she is bigger than ever! Becoming a gay Icon an all!

  • I just adore Edie at 2:05 and 3:30. Her smirk and fashion at 2:05 is wonderful. The hat/scarf and dark top/light pants combo and spin shows so much sass at 3:30. She truly was a unique individual.

  • They were raised as Debutantes with no skills. If you don't teach a lion cub to hunt it never learns to....even as it gets older. And eventually, it dies.

Humans are not so far from that.

It's interesting that they are painted as the upper class.

They look and act nothing less than the immigrant that they perceived they were inherently better than. The only difference was their filth ridden East Hamptom home. Even cats keep their litter boxes clean.

  • There is truth in this mean spirted comments. Im torn becuase to a degree I agree with your view. Debutantes of that day were not raised to be independent and take care of themselves. It was their job to have a debut, find a rich man from a long line of rich men and keep him happy amongst his material possesions and mistresses. Big and Little Edie couldnt land the life long rich man and had nothing else to do but live alone. Edie somewhat fulfilled her dream however.

  • My comment wasn't mean spirited. I said nothing disparaging. I was spot on. If it was perceived as mean it was only because they lacked the intuitiveness, worldliness, and self awareness to know the liability that they were. They were like puppies never adopted.

  • Edie could've stayed in the city and gotten a job to support herself. But she either wouldn't or couldn't work. That's why she was stuck in there with her weirdo mother.

  • It must be said that big edie ruined her daughters life with her selfish need to be looked after by her

  • its sad to see someone with such potential not use it to their advantage. to be a shut in along side her mother. its depressing. but she was lovely, yes a tad crazy, but lovely

  • These two were batshit insane.

  • Comment removed

  • Little Edie, at 56 years of age, without having had plastic surgery, was still just gorgeous. Amazing. Beautiful.

  • these women are the best ! thanks for sharing

  • are these the real ones??

  • yep! aren't they delicious?

  • i know the song is "i dream too much" but who sings this version its soo beautiful.

  • The woman who sings "I Dream Too Much is Hildegarde.

  • I saw the "evening gown" in another segment of Beales of Grey Gardens, and it was definitely a nightgown, not an evening dress.

  • Wow, amazing video,

the outfits that Little Edie wears are simply classic,I was amazed with every one of 'em

she's truly a legend of her own kind.

Bless her and may she rest in peace

  • lillte Edie carried herself elegantly and gracefully, too bad they had to lie like that.

  • lie?

  • These ladies are OMG wonderful.

  • they have no shame..that greedy twat Jackie should have moved them in with her, Jackie was a money grubber

  • big edie didn't wanna leave grey gardens. i think what jackie did was noble enough. she really didn't have to do that. big edie was stubborn as a mule. even when she knew she had to sell the property or it wouldn't be enough money to keep it up, she decided against it.

  • "...greedy twat Jackie..." LOLOLOL..I love it cwecub. "Is it true Jack Kennedy GAVE YOU GONORRHEA ??"

  • Jackie gave them $32,000. $25,000 to clean the filth. She did this as she was mourning her late husband. I find nobility in that. The Bouvier women were raised to marry rich and powerful men. Jackie Did, Little Edie didnt. You cant blame her for landing a big fish. Although I think Big Edie kept little Edie from finding true love, I think they enjoyed each other. Obviously Big Edie had issues over the younger woman her husband left her for and didnt want Lil Edie to be a homewrecker

  • @quetou Now we know why Jackie married that gross rich old man. She saw how her relatives were living and decided not to follow the same path.

Still, if I saw my Aunt in those conditions, I would have given them a lot more help. Jackie payed for the clean-up because it got in the papers and was 'embarrassing'. She didn't see them ever again afterwards. Jackie left them in poverty and isolation. Nice family...

  • hair or no hair little edie was so elegant.

mama beale treated little edie like a visual object.

  • Why did she always cover her head? Did she have hair?

  • In the movie they said something about when she would get really stressed out her hair would fall out. But im not really sure.

  • She had alopecia, a condition that makes your hair fall out.

  • Great Jerome Kern song sung by Hildegard.

  • phphphphphphphphp

  • edie sports a hoodie nicely....

  • God I love these women, thank you for posting this!!

  • She still kept her figure thats for sure, if she put on a nice wig she still could have found a beau, she also could have been a fashion designer!

  • I love Edie, I really do. But eating cat food and never having children does a body good, obviously!

  • @quetou They didn't eat cat food! They lived on tinned meats, pate, crackers, corn, fruit, takeaways of pre-cooked chicken and quiches...and lots of ice cream!

Little Edie obviously danced alot and swam in the sea practically every day until she died. She probably had the most incredible immune system imagineable having been exposed to so much bacteria. I'm not suggesting that we let our cats crap everywhere, but this obsession with using disinfectants in the home is so misguided and wrong.

  • Trust me, I am a fan of these women. But there are several reports that when their trust ran out, they resorted to eating ice cream true.....and cat food. Several reports. Am I to entirely dismiss those accounts?

  • You'd be wise to, it's more likely the cats ate expensive tinned pate intended for human consumption.

  • if you call cat food pate', it is no longer cat food

  • I see what you're saying, Quetou. I got the feeling "pate" was code for cat food at times.

  • she had such confidence and clout, you can't bear but be pulled in to watch her.

  • She always look chic....love it.

  • "...alright don't get them excited ! Put the DAMN thing on !!!" Only E. O'neill or Tennesee W. could write this stuff. I sit constantly in reverence and awe of these two Crone/ Goddesses...they are Demeter and Proserpine, fecund Venuses, fleas and all. I am enrapt and diminished and illumined by the ghostly, flickering image...What would I have done in the living presence?

  • Fascinating movie. Little Edie was the star, no doubt about it. Hate to admit it but I felt like a voyeur of sorts, a little guilty watching their pathetic life. As much as I enjoyed it, I couldn't help from thinking it was somewhat cruel and exploitive as these ladies were not 100% in my opinion. But, hey, they both seemed thrilled by being featured in it.

  • I'm absolutely fascinated! I love both's fashion-sense. Totally effortless! Lil Edie has fnally found fame through this documentary, and the publicity from the HBO movie has broadened interest and has gained new fans of both. May she find happiness and peace in knowing that she did become a star. It may not have been in life, as she had wanted; but this will be timeless, which is even better.

  • Your sentiments are lovely! I never knew of Little Edie or her Mother until I watched the HBO film. I cannot wait to view this documentary. What a interesting woman Little Edie was. Yes, she is indeed a star forever!!!

  • Absolutely love her brown and white ensemble at 3:30. I wish I could look as effortlessly chic!

  • does anyone know why she lost her hair? been looking but cannot find a reason

  • she has aropisia or owever you spell it. its when your hair falls out

  • alopoecia

  • I love these woman despite there obvious poverty while dinning on pate' and trend setting, they're both so beautiful eccentric they'll be remembered by fans always.

  • amazing fashion sense

  • The movie on HBO was great. I thought Drew Barrymore got Little Edie's accent and weird little mannerisms so perfectly.

  • What is this music, I'd love to know!!

  • the song is "I Dream Too Much"--i believe the artist is Lily Pons

  • Comment removed

  • i've just been informed that the singer of the version used here is actually Hildegarde. my bad!

  • Just saw the HBO film. Fantastic! The best Drew has ever done. Liked her before but love her now. She disappears into the role. They both do really.

  • Brava Drew!! She and Jessica really were dead-on in their portrayals. Excellent job! In fact, I could have had less flashbacks because the older Edies are much more endearing and interesting.

  • Everyone makes so much of the "love" they felt but if you watch the documentary you see that Little Eddie was totally dependent on her mother financially and her mother could be quite cruel. It was definitely a love-hate relationship. Mom was controlling and manipulating and did not want to be left alone. Why didn't the brothers help? Do they appear in any documentary?

  • Thia was a great film!!! I was very surprised they were Jackies relatives!

  • Of all the videos i just watched , this is by far the best. and the most interesting. Amazing how perfectly both actresses could portray the real BIg & Little Edie in the HBO movie! Everything seemed so real in the movie after watching these different videos today. Wonderfully made.
