  • Heard this dozens of times, Still totally spellbinding.

  • an old man hears somthng from his past

  • Kurt Cobain brought me here (Pennyroyal Tea) and that is awesome.

  • he is brilliant

  • beautiful loser..... rip

  • this dude made great music.

  • cest la vie :)

  • Better than the recorded version somehow. I guess he's not as passionate in a studio.

  • Juro que terminé de escucharla con ganas de llorar... excesivamente buena!

  • Not even once he blinks. Amazing.

  • Who's reaching sky... Leonard is getting it.

  • I found Cohen in the movie McCabe and Mrs Miller. The Stranger Song got me interested but Suzanne was the one that made me an addict.

  • These lyrics are so authentic. So real. So Strong. So beautiful. Leonard Cohen is one of the few that utters poetry into our ears.

  • Listening to Leonard Cohen raises my IQ by at least 30 points.

  • sad and beautiful song

  • I loved Leonard Cohen all the way back to the 60's when I first bought his album that this song was on. This song is familiar to a lot of us who knew "a stranger." We've been there, done that.

Leonard has a new CD coming out called Darkness, can't wait. You can hear segments if you're interested & so interesting how his voice lowered almost an octave from the 60's but his heart and soul is still there in his words and music. The genius of Leonard Cohen is still unknown to many unfortunates.

  • thats julie felix saw her 5 years ago getting older like all of us but still cool..

  • The announcer is beautiful.

  • i learned about this guy from daxx riggs, who does him justice, but child's played compared to the original

  • Amazing artist.

  • Then John Belushi snatches the guitar from him and bashes it to pieces.

  • Im 18 and im saying that 90 percent of todays music is absoulte bullshit this is great great music

  • @JamaicaGrooveMix No need to say "look I'm young I listen to old stuff I'm so cool"... There is also plenty of beautiful music today, just look for it.

  • @JamaicaGrooveMix me too im also 18! i hate todays crappy music

  • @MultiTheused there is also good music today...

  • @angerock49 people are too lazy to find it though, they look at the top 40 and think that's it

  • damn, this is really good! no matter wat @NovaScotiaChick says, this beats most modern music.

  • how does he finger pick and sing at the same time?!

  • @babyshams90 practice...

  • i like. wish my guitar was that

  • First heard this in McCabe and Mrs Miller with Warren Beattie and Julie Christie in 1971. Changed my view of music.

  • mccabe & mrs. miller anyone?

  • Thumbs up, if you thought Charlie Sheen was on the picture :D

  • Is Dustin Hoffman Leonard Cohen's doppelganger or is it the other way around?

  • Quite possibly the greatest lyrics in a song ever

  • closing time

  • THE MUSIC OF THE SOULS IS THE MUSIC OF HEARTS OF SO MANY TO ONLY TO HATE BUT TO HATE ONE

  • if you kant ceep the rite walk in line your out your out not to love not haTE JUST TO SEE THE POWERS THAT BE IS GOING TO TELL MOM AND DAD ON AVERYONE ON EVERY ONE

  • you have been speaking to me for so many many years, Mr. Cohen. may you long sing out loud!!

  • What a poet.

  • 4:52, tear dropping from his left eye.

  • @Dandaphne80 Or sweat...

  • @eternalnightmare13 how unromantic

  • @Dandaphne80

Yes, and everyone thinks he cried because of emotion. It was because of the intense lighting, combined with the rather difficult guitar he plays. He DID NOT cry because he was touched emotionally. It even says so earlier, in this comment thread.

  • @JeppeVJ I think you're right. Fuck you anyway.

  • @Dandaphne80 Excuse me?? T

Well, I bet you want to, but I sure as hell wouldn't do that with you!!

  • @JeppeVJ God doesn't exist. Mary does exist, but God doesn't. You should learn that before making yourself explode with Mentos and Diet Coke. Now I'm gonna burn all my fuckin' Leonard Cohen's albums and fuckin start listening to Gigi D'Alessio and stuff like that. Oh, A streetcar named desire is a great movie btw, you should check it out man, Marlon Brando is an amazing actor man. All I have in this world is my balls and my word and I don't break them for no one. Chris Rock's so funny!

  • BROTHER WITH DUSTIN HOFFMAN???? KKKKK

  • fuck everybody below me.

  • This is so fucking good

  • it's so impossible for me to finger pick like he does in this song.. even though he's showing me how to do it here

  • wtf??! hes talking- out of tune. i didnt even know that was possible. this is sooo boring.

  • @mandyjanemore he is not out of tune. he is using phrasing in singing. something that people in blues singing do a lot. Singing is not just using a melisma technique in every syllable or note. Singing is not just belting out a high note (Which if not used right, it is out right dangerous to your vocal cords). Please be open to all forms of music. There is a story to learn.

  • @pdeleon9 - ha ha - some 30 + years ago I wanted to print off a bunch of "Anson Williams Fan Club" cards for those that don't have the soul to hear a truly golden voice ( my apologies to Mr. Williams who I'm sure is a sweet guy ).

  • @BetweenFrames Don't know who's Anson Williams, but I will find out. lol.

  • @mandyjanemore No, he's singing in a folkish melody. Singing isn't just spewing out over-souled notes all over the place like Christina Aguilera. Here's a hint... the point of the song is the actual lyrics.

  • @RedJezka WELL if the lyrics are the focus he shoulda kept them on paper, just keep it as a poem. because his boring voice does them no justice, slurring in the same flat tone. A song needs more than just lyrics and music, the artist has to have a certain energy or charisma, or vibe. not necessarily 'over-souled' notes. Just something more than whatever that was.

  • @mandyjanemore I guess you never got into folk music. What you hear in pop music is actually between 5% to 10% of music worldwide. Why? Because pop music is for people who only seek what is popular to everyone else and not for themselves individually speaking. I respect your opinion nonetheless.

  • @mandyjanemore Haha, when people don't really know what they're talking about, they talk about "a certain energy".

  • @edgaram69 .... or charisma, or vibe. Yeah that's what I said. And I stand by it. I honestly don't know why people would sit and listen to a man moan on in a voice that could put a hyperactive dog to sleep. Yeah his lyrics are good, but he has crap stage presence. he should give his songs to others who can do the lyrics justice.

  • @mandyjanemore Well, maybe you're just right haha. Damn, I feel this was a pointless conversation if I don't reply haha, but I agree with you hahaha... guess that's a reason why discussions can pointlessly last for years. Just goodbye haha

  • music with meaning; this thing is missing today

  • Adam Sandler?

  • Dear ol' Felix. And Leonard, too. :)

  • He is dealing with a mind that has been demented since adolescence. Fueled by drug addiction and deep depression, but hey what a class and unique artist.

  • this song hurts.

  • Why has music lost its integrity of today? musicians in this time took music more seriously and it shows. Long live the creative, original musicians who play to make a difference in music and the surrounding world.

  • Don't cry Mr. Cohen : (

  • Ich erlebte Leonard Cohen 1976 in Stuttgart. Immer noch besitze ich zwei Langspielplatten, ein Textheft und die Eintrittskarte!

  • Comment removed

  • Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller? Is he the singer ?

  • The best part of this clip is at 4:50 when you can see a tear run down his cheek

  • Perfection made song. Can anyone explain the meaning of the lyrics?

  • symbolism

  • @eelpieballox HY!, I do agree Leonard Cohen is pron to using Symbolism in his lyrics... question would be: is there a meaning behing the symbols? i.e.: is he dealing with the problems of someone who is an addict to drugs?.

  • @eelpieballox I agree Leonard Cohen is prone to using Symbolism in his lyrics... question would be: is there a meaning behind the symbols? i.e.: is he dealing with the problems of someone who is addicted to drugs, in this song, the stranger song?.

  • Great

  • My mother used to play this album when I was younger... this is now my favorite song :)

  • He is a real Edeljude !

  • This is amazing. Just gives me the chills :|

  • His voice as I will always love it...

  • Love it ...thumbs up ..lovly greetings ann

  • Today all we have is X-factor crap. What went wrong?

  • @SCHRUBBE1966 When I was a teenager in the seventies, my father called all music rubbish (except classical) . Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. :) It is not fair to today's young people to call today's music rubbish or whatever.

    This is their era.

So many older people comment on today's musical crap, but there is plenty that has merit.

  • @NovaScotiaChick can I borrow and tweet this?

  • @pdeleon9 YES man, spread the word!

But before you do, please add me as a friend because I'd like to ask you something in a personal message before you tweet it.

  • @pdeleon9 Don't you wanna borrow it anymore? :)

  • @NovaScotiaChick haha I was waiting for you. lol. Like that I can plug your youtube.

  • @NovaScotiaChick Thank you for your fantastic comment. The greatest listener is one that really opens his ears to all sounds, no matter how old or recent. When I listen to Led Zeppelin, my favorite singer in the world is Robert Plant. When I listen to Ella Fitzgerald, she's my most favorite singer in the world. When I listen to Amy Whinehouse, she is my most favorite singer in the world. Of course, I've never enjoyed Katy Perry. :p

  • @Tengent Funny that you mention three that are also high on my list of Wow! artists. :) I like your concept of loving Robert or Ella or Amy best at the time you listen to them. I do wish that music lovers would stop criticising each other's musical preferences in such condescending ways. But I guess that is the same as wishing for world peace *grin*.

Katy Perry who? :p Seriously, I looked her up. First track I picked: almost 138,000,000 views. See? It doesn't matter you don't enjoy her. ;)

  • @NovaScotiaChick I'm young and i say that today music is rubbish, it's not the era, it's rubbish.

  • @WhiteSunGroupoff You are entitled to your opinion.

Thank god for today's musicians that the majority of people do not share it.

  • @NovaScotiaChick I am a musician :\

  • @WhiteSunGroupoff .you are young you got a long way to understand what a good music is.::try (lady gaga, and that group. )this is a little complicated for you.

  • @kisumudalahera nice one lol

  • @kisumudalahera condescending comes to mind

  • @kisumudalahera Nono wait, i don't listen to lady gaga, i listen to Queen, beatles, pearl jam, mozart, beethoven, chopin, louis armstrong, frank sinatra etc.

  • @kisumudalahera Oh, and this is real music (leonard cohen).

  • @NovaScotiaChick yea but i think good music is harder to sell these days because people have crap taste and so mainstream music is mostly crap. im a young guy(19) and i cant seem to follow contemporary music and find myself listening to time-proven classics. is that a bad thing? i dont know.

  • @NovaScotiaChick thank you!

  • Could by studying for my HSC exams, but i'd rather listen to Leonard Cohen

  • people love this song in my country

  • Great!

  • 'Well, I've been waiting, I was sure

we'd meet between the trains we're waiting for

I think it's time to board another

Please understand, I never had a secret chart

to get me to the heart of this

    or any other matter''

Well Leonard you have made me cry again, I have loved you for 40 years and now I have introduced you to the next generation hope they will love you for the next 40 and you bring them happiness and sadness as you have for me. Its been a privilege to listen to your poetry

  • listen to this drunk then it makes sense

  • c'est l'histoire de ma vie ça ....

  • "I told you when i came i was a stranger."

  • God just became 77. Happy Birthday, master of the word! Please keep going...

  • sooo beautifull!!!! aahh

  • I should say "Dealer" - looks like he's milking us for some sort or emotional response to his words of wisdom

  • who the fuck are the dealers? And why is he crying?

  • Comment removed

  • Hell of a jew. More of his people need to be less square.

  • @BrockWorthington Mostly: The most progressive people on the planet. Learn your history (and sports-greats, teachers, writers, actors, directors, producers, playwrights, politicos, activists, and leaders of social change.

  • @liagarden I respect the race to some extent, but I'd have to majorly disagree with you. They did kill Christ, you know. Sports is obviously African Americans and other types of national Africans, teachers is argued among many, writers and playwright among the English and the Italian, activists and leaders of social among the Spanish and Latin culture. As for actors, directors and producers, definitely agree.

Anyway, this performance is solemnly stunning.

  • @themodernwarhol

What are you talking about? I am Latin Culture, how can you speak in name of millions of us, of Italians, Africans, or whoever. There are cultures, habits, that´s true, but there is no way you can believe that what you say it´s certain. >You should travel a bit more and see. Don´t buy someone else opinion and just speak as if you know.

  • Rosieltpme, thank you. You expressed perfectly what Leonard's music does for me and, indeed, for so many. It makes you weep with gratitude for both the exquisite beauty and horriffic darkness of the human condition, and you realize they are really the same thing.

  • cohen a legend jusst like dylan

  • was this on any of his albums? i can't find it :(

  • @Domydoor The Stranger Song was in his album: The Songs of Leonard Cohen from 1968.

  • And he wants to trade the game he plays for shelter...

  • good

  • always, always,always!

  • Robert Plant is his clone!

  • I remember following Leonard Cohen in the 1960's and considering him to be a somewhat down but brilliant poet and singer songwriter. Suzanne, Sisters of Mercy and The Stranger Song had a vise like hold on the kids then. His lyrics are those unknown today. Additionally is live work is voluminous and his friends in folk rock are glued to him.

  • No the chords are: d, c, d, a, e minor (and e minor sus4) and an f sharp minor (and f sharp minor sus4), but he switches fast between those and a sus 4. That is why he keeps three fingers on the same fret on f sharp. F sharp sus 4 uses the fourth fret on strings 3,4,5.

I started playing a few weeks ago, but that is what I can hear. Am I right?

  • I HAVE NO FRIENDS

    AND NEVER HAVE DONE .

  • wowah i adore music but these lyrics really carry me thru such deep feelings to a climax wanting more. so i discovered his other song called 'Who By Fire'-do i need to say; love em!!

  • Holy shit. This is -music-.

  • Comment removed

  • If you're into Leonard Cohen, listen to Nemo Shaw singing 'Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye'!

  • reminds me of my friend who quit his job to play poker, thinking he could live off it, then that backfired on him, but he still wants to be a professional poker player.

  • your right, no 1st string. still he is using the 4 stroke picking pattern on the other 5 strings. [thumb, 1st, 2nd, 3rd,] the visual giveaway is actually on the left hand . when playing the F#m he barres the cord typically with his 1st finger. but then he uses the rest of his 3 fingers on the same fret [4 ] there would be no need to do that [it wouldn`t make sense ] if he were using the simpler 3 stroke pattern with the bass line he`s using [thumb]

  • I cry at the end too. This might make my all time top 10.

  • Awesome from the Broadcast of MaCabe And Mrs Miller...MaCabe was dying at this point right at the end of the movie.

  • Bob Dylan is a poet with the guitar, Vladimir Vysotsky was a poet with the guitar, but Leonard Cohen is a G-d with the guitar

  • forty plus years on, thank you for sharing

  • He cries at the end of the song. Just beautiful...

  • @Horlitz Im crying at the end of the song...

  • @lotr343 This is is beautiful too. I was a dealer. I know what you mean.

  • no one would be used to that unless they played flamenco or classical guitar. leonard plays on a flamenco guitar [specifically built for playing flamenco] it has a more brilliant sound than the more mellow classical guitar. i suspect he probably lays out some nice flamenco riffs when no one`s around.

  • Incredible...

  • amazing song, so deep... love Cohen, surprised I'm discovering all these songs of his I've never found before... thanks for uploading this vid!

  • Cohen sings poems about life. Legend.

  • I remember this so well from McCabe and Mrs.Miller almost made me weepy!

  • Julie Felix is pretty hot, i'd knock the dust off of that pussy

  • ive just been introduced to Leonard Cohen & love his music, the more i listen to, the more i want to hear, his voice is remarkable & sends shivers down my spine.....im converted :)

  • fag shedz a tear at tha end da bitch

  • @thepowerout Twat.

  • @TheJakebridgeman erm...what?

  • Now another stranger seems to want you to ignore his dreams as though they were the burden of some other.

Love that line, Cohen is sublime.

  • peter stop your weird strange black songs wat heb jy toch

  • Thumbs up if you think thumbs up comments are annoying and lame!

  • 4:52 one lonely tear

  • @madshushan i have seen this video several times and think it is one of the best performances I have ever seen, but just realizing that made it all the better. So emotional and passionate! incredible

  • Comment removed

  • this is the most intense performance i've ever seen.

  • Some people are born to make chairs and tables, others to make houses, Leonard was born to make songs. Beautiful songs.
