I always find it awe-inspiring to see a border collie work. Dot is a beautiful girl and I wish you all at Border Collie Rescue good luck and thank you for taking time out of your lives to help these amazing dogs.
Great choice of music. I have a Border Collie myself-- she looks strikingly like Dot. :"3
Go, Dot, Go!
My dog probably wouldn't know what to do with sheep if she saw them... she was raised in the suburbs with a large yard to roam around... and me as well as my friends and anything that was brought out into the yard to herd. Of course she came in with us at night, but she preferred to be outside so she could run. xD
@Gurkenlurken : Normal sheep have docked tails due to fly strike. This flock must be in an area where fly strike isn't an issue. In an area where it is & the tails are not docked the flies lay larvae around the tail & the maggots then eat the sheep. Sheep have "dags" or "crutchings" around their rear end, which is wool stained by urine and dung which attracts the flies.
Amazing, I love nothing more than to see them working. Beautiful Dot. Our rescue BC lives to work, he is an amazing flyball dog, loves obedience training and we have even tried sheepherding (I was useless, he loved it). I really hope he will live as long as Dot!!! and no doubt will be as over the top to his last day as he is now. :)
My dream job? Forget fireman, astronaut, I.T billionaire. It'd be hanging out with Border Collies on a daily basis. Well done guys!!!!! Great work!!!!!
Does it matter if she's a flamin pure-bred or not? A fabulous dog doing a fantastic job. Why does such dog snobbery exist? All dogs, be they pure-bred or 'Heinz 57' are valuable, worthy animals (it's the humans who are sadly lacking!)
Unfortunately, people today don't recognize a TRUE border collie when they see it because the kennel clubs have defined what they think a border collie should look like. A true border collie is not a body/head type or a color, it is a working ethic that comes from an incredibly long line of working border collies.
Just like labs and golden retrievers, the kennel clubs ruin an awesome breed by breeding for what the dog was never intended to be.... a pretty face in the show ring.

I think I love this video so much because it's kind of spiritually satisfying to me... in a way inspiring. I mean... if you think about it, she is doing exactly what she is meant to do... exactly what is most important, exactly what she wants and needs to do... She knows what she wants. She knows who she is. How many of us achieve that... how many of us find out what we really want to be. But she has it... and it's so simple.

I love this video! I also have a border collie named Max. Hes turning one on April 18 2009. Hes eaten rat poisen gotten hit by a car and chewed his cage so much and shaked that he almost died but hes still alive.
I had the same dog when i was like a yr old untill i was 5 but than it got attacked by like 3 pit bulls we lived in eastern Ukraine at that time and the dog he went outside by himself and came back by himself also he was a orange color one day i should get one exactly like it :]
Thank you for all of your wonderful videos. My heart grows as I see them. I own a Border Collie, Skye, and would like to introduce her into herding in a couple of months (she's 5 months old). Cheers, Dennis
Beautiful girl, they are so lovely to watch enjoying themselves. Cheeky sheep, you know they are thinking of ways to get one over on her. I love that your sheep don't have cropped tails either, that is fantastic.
Border collie herding instinct, as well as their color, coat and size, varies from one extreme to another, but one thing is typically consistent: they always need something to do, something to obsess on. dont even get me started on the intelligence, I read of documented cases of a "vocabulary" (not spoken, of course, but "understood" of many hundred words/commands. they are simply amazing, and the result of breeding a dog for the best that it can be, not the best that it can look.
my dad has one that looks like that that he claims he is a border collie but it bit my sister on a bbq he had! My border collie doesnt bite anyone! but she looks total border collie but she is only like 30lbs, small
We assume you are judging the look of the Border Collie by the international KC breed standard, which is an artificial concoction based on conformity to one particular type.
In fact the BC is a very diverse breed. The 'traditional' Black and White rough coated type is not the norm for the breed.
Dot has a long (and distinguished) pedigree and is very typical of the smooth coated tricolour popular as working dogs throughout the UK.
Dot is an amazing girl. We rescued our 3 yr. old boy (Vern) whom we renamed "Buddy" the day after we got him. Buddy is also, a truely amazing dog. He's 10 now, and is the love of our lives. He loves Thursdays because that's garbage (truck) day and he does a figure eight in our back yard for hours!
We use Swaledale sheep for assessment and training. A small, hardy breed, very flighty. Native to the Pennine Yorkshire Dales, originally Swaledale - hence the name.
Traditionally, horns are left on which makes them easier to get a hold of! (the Yorkshire Dales National Park logo is a horned Swaledale Ram).
Their quick movements stimulate instinct in dogs we are assessing for working drive.
Their normal environment is sparse, hilly moorland grazing - wild hill farming terrain.
I love collies, Willy is the name of mine, he loves to herd the cows, horses, sheep, lawnmower. basically anything that moves that he can orbit. haha love these dogs, greatest pets but need stuff to do! We always called Willy "Free Willy" since he was always crazy doing something, he also taught himself how to shake, wave to people and the "bang your dead" move.
yea my mom had one of these when she was little and they didnt have a big backyard to heard sheep so she was just running around the pool keeping the pool round lol
Interesting point - Oreos are chocolate biscuits - chocolate is toxic for dogs - in the UK the company is running an advert for Oreo's using a dog. In the ad the dog does not get any biscuits but it is still gives the wrong impression and is typical of so much irresponsible and ill informed advertising that exploits animals by using them to try and gain some empathy for their product.
My reaction - stupid advert - won't buy Oreos ever again - lots of other biscuits out there.
What a sweetie! remindes me of my Border, Vinnie, who is also adopted. Vinster is almost 10. We don't have sheep to chase about, though. Milk bones, with the other dogs.... oh, to live in the country..
what a fantastic dog! i have a 12 year old tri female very much like her, but no rescue, she was born and raised on a sheep farm. what an amazing rescue your girl is!!! my other bc that i responded with a video response is just starting out...
she is just a joy to watch , shes got that healthy glow in her eyes and looks like a very beautiful dog xxR.I.P to my dads Border collie Lassie x shes ina better place now though hey! luv ur dogg x
This is how border collies act. They are intelligent dogs but that instinct doesn't disappear. This breed must be given extensive physical and mental exercise-- far more than most breeds. Two of these dogs have been found to have a linguistic skill previously only thought to exist in Great Apes (fast mapping).
you still need to train them to understand certain whistles and commands, it would be quite dangerous to let an untrained collie near a herd of sheep as the dog might act agressively when the sheep dont do exactly what the collie wants it to do. my border collie herds everything instinctively ( by everything i mean everything, children, toys etc. ) they would probably be fine but it would be fairly risky. maybe you should try it! (:
Herding instinct is modified hunting behavior. It is further modified by training to prevent the dogs from killing the sheep. On the St. Kilda Archipelago of Scotland, the sheep don't naturally flock, so the collies are used to "catch" (that is, grip the sheep by the fleece with their mouths and hold them) the sheep until the shepherds can come. I've seen what an untrained border collie can do to livestock. It's pretty bad.
I know Border Collies heard instinctivly but does this mean you don't need to train them? Or does it mean they'll spend hours reforming a group of sheep and putting them no where?
What im trying to say is if we get a few sheep will our border collie herd them or would we need to train her to do that?
Some BC's have ability to work naturally but for most, training helps! It depends what you want them to do.
Gathering, holding or bringing stock in comes naturally. Driving sheep away, shedding and more refined skills usually need training.
If you were to get sheep, maybe your BC would herd them - depends on the level of instinct it has. Maybe it would only chase them, maybe it might try and injure them!
Not something to enter into lightly. You may not like, or cope with, what comes out.
She's beautiful. Border Collies are so intelligent. My border collie, Cooper, has this natural herding instinct, but we don't have any sheep, only a cat, and he doesn't care for being rounded up.
I got a rescue collie four weeks ago. He's eight and blind in one eye. Have had to feed him up. Have never had a collie before but am really glad I've got one now. They are amazing.
Lovely to see such an old dog enjoying work so much. Sadly our dog Joey had a problem with his back for the last few years of his life and couldn't work, but still enjoyed life.
aw! my border collie has never even seen a farm animal before but his herding instincts are sooo strong that he will often try to herd my other dog when he starts running around the yard.
Really enjoyed watching this - lovely old dog. My BC bitch (also a rescue during foot & mouth a few years ago) herds everything - the chickens have a hell of a time being stalked and herded backwards and forwards, as do the ducks, the geese, the cats, the ponies, the postman, the other dogs....
My border passed away at 13 years old 2 weeks ago. Sorry bout your loss. I`m here remembering...smartest friend I ever had. Smart, loyal dogs.....RIP Lotto!
Ok sonax0cong, we concede that a wheaten terrier is probably cuter than a 'roughty-toughty Border Collie'. You should put a vid of her/him on your channel to share with the rest of us.
Hi Sambolew. It's quite amazing how varied in size and markings the Border Collie breed can be. Dot is quite big for a 'lady', with long legs. Another lass we have at the centre is a year old and not much bigger than a large corgi (although her legs are a sensible length). If you think your BC is 'mad' try some calming obedience exercises. They think better when they're not hyped up. Thanks for the comment.
Hey, cool video and a nice choice of song too. We adopted a Border Collie from a rescue about 5 years ago. No sheep for him to herd around here unfortunately, but I notice similar behaviours. Whenever the wind picks up, he'll dash outside and 'herd' all the leaves that fall from the trees in our yard.
Hi Veorens - Thanks for the comment. Yes, Border Collies love to herd and without sheep they will often turn their talents to other things. Better to herd leaves than cars, lorries or motor bikes! Shame he can't clear them up while he's at it.
Nice job. I wonder where you're all located! Poor Dixie doesn't have sheep so she has needs lots of human attention and toys to keep her happy. She is quite happy though, living free in the mountains.
Thanx otherpower - we're located near York-UK. Pretty flat here, no mountains but enough sheep to go round! Sounds like Dixie has a pretty free and easy lifestyle and a great place to live!
Like what you are doing for the alternative energy movement - you could put a website link on your channel. We had a look-great site-very informative. Would love to convert to alternatives and are working towards it. Your site will help us as we are into DIY and recycling.
She is getting on and the signs of age are there, but although the flesh is weakening, the spirit shines through. I suspect she will want to herd until she drops and, saying that, I suppose that the best way to go is to go doing what you love most. The lyrics of the song reflect exactly how we feel about her and how priviledged we are to have shared part of her life and her company.
She really is a game dog and we just love to watch her. She knows just when to apply pressure and when to hold back and she is so hard working and so loyal it brings tears to the eyes. As she is getting quite old we try and ease back on her and take another dog but she gets really disgusted and gives us the evil eye if she thinks she is being left out.
We enjoyed filming it! Someone said that we should add a commentary to explain what it is the dog is doing but I think that may make it all too serious and too much like a sheepdog training lesson - besides interfeering with the music!
Any feedback on that point from youtubers will be greatly appreciated.
I think an explanation would be justified and wonderful. There are lots of people that could benefit by learning what's going on with the animals in the video. 8-)
I think a basic/general explanation of what going on or those who are not as familiar with herding as others (trained working corgis with Jerome Steward years ago, so I know a bit, but dont claim to be an expert).
I always find it awe-inspiring to see a border collie work. Dot is a beautiful girl and I wish you all at Border Collie Rescue good luck and thank you for taking time out of your lives to help these amazing dogs.

Aww! a mixture of compliment and abuse!
Dot is quite a popular name for a working Border Collie.
Dot says she is very proud of her name - had it all her life - only thing she had when she came into rescue and she decided she would keep it.
She forgives you for your trangression because you also said she is 'super' and she agrees - so do we.
Anyway, reading it backwards it reminds her of an old freind, now passed on - Tod.

Dot is ISDS registered. Bred by John Templeton. Good trialing line. Had 1 litter before coming to BCR. One son is an English Nationals Champion.
Came as a redundancy victim of Foot & Mouth - late 2001.
Trained by lady and needed a job.
Latched onto Nicki - convinced us that she wanted to stay to help out at the centre by controling sheep so we could assess other rescue dogs .
BCR lead sheepdog for many years & very good at her job.
Now coming on 17yrs - retired.

Typical example of someone not watching a video to the end. Good video, but I would have liked to see the sheep being herded into the pen.

This is how border collies act. They are intelligent dogs but that instinct doesn't disappear. This breed must be given extensive physical and mental exercise-- far more than most breeds. Two of these dogs have been found to have a linguistic skill previously only thought to exist in Great Apes (fast mapping).

Really lovely footage -- shows the drive and dedication of this amazing breed.
Nice choice of music, too! KUDOS.

Wow. That looks good. I got my selft 2 border collies, but only for walking and so. But your dog. Exccellent !
hapsmig 3 years ago
you still need to train them to understand certain whistles and commands, it would be quite dangerous to let an untrained collie near a herd of sheep as the dog might act agressively when the sheep dont do exactly what the collie wants it to do. my border collie herds everything instinctively ( by everything i mean everything, children, toys etc. ) they would probably be fine but it would be fairly risky. maybe you should try it! (:
heremateyouryummy 3 years ago
Herding instinct is modified hunting behavior. It is further modified by training to prevent the dogs from killing the sheep. On the St. Kilda Archipelago of Scotland, the sheep don't naturally flock, so the collies are used to "catch" (that is, grip the sheep by the fleece with their mouths and hold them) the sheep until the shepherds can come. I've seen what an untrained border collie can do to livestock. It's pretty bad.
Retrieverman1 3 years ago
I know Border Collies heard instinctivly but does this mean you don't need to train them? Or does it mean they'll spend hours reforming a group of sheep and putting them no where?
What im trying to say is if we get a few sheep will our border collie herd them or would we need to train her to do that?
00Indy 3 years ago

TrueAiR 3 years ago
Hi truebloogirl - thanks for your comments.
Dot is a sheepdog and that's what they do - herd sheep and move them around the fields to where the shepherd or farmer wants them.
This is what Border Collies were designed and bred to do. It is only recently people have started keeping them as pets.
Without sheepdogs rounding up sheep, farmers would have to do a lot of pointless running around.
They say a good dog can do the work of 10 men but 10 men could not do the work of one dog.
True!

This would be a good screen saver. I think it is relaxing to watch the dog work.
ov3rlydramatic 4 years ago
Some say it is always relaxing to watch others work, but you're quite right, watching sheepdogs can be very relaxing.
Go to a sheepdog trial on a nice sunny day and chill out (take a picnic)- or just watch a shepherd sorting his flock in a field with a good dog.

cute dog though :P but not as cute as mine ;) soft coated wheaten terrier.
sonax0conq 4 years ago
Ok sonax0cong, we concede that a wheaten terrier is probably cuter than a 'roughty-toughty Border Collie'. You should put a vid of her/him on your channel to share with the rest of us.
Thanks for the comment.

it is like my border collie but mine is smaller and rele MAD :-D !!!
sambolew 4 years ago
Hi Sambolew. It's quite amazing how varied in size and markings the Border Collie breed can be. Dot is quite big for a 'lady', with long legs. Another lass we have at the centre is a year old and not much bigger than a large corgi (although her legs are a sensible length). If you think your BC is 'mad' try some calming obedience exercises. They think better when they're not hyped up. Thanks for the comment.

BorderCollieRescueUK 4 years ago
Hey, cool video and a nice choice of song too. We adopted a Border Collie from a rescue about 5 years ago. No sheep for him to herd around here unfortunately, but I notice similar behaviours. Whenever the wind picks up, he'll dash outside and 'herd' all the leaves that fall from the trees in our yard.
veorens 4 years ago
Hi Veorens - Thanks for the comment. Yes, Border Collies love to herd and without sheep they will often turn their talents to other things. Better to herd leaves than cars, lorries or motor bikes! Shame he can't clear them up while he's at it.
Hope you have a great life together.
BorderCollieRescueUK 4 years ago
Nice job. I wonder where you're all located! Poor Dixie doesn't have sheep so she has needs lots of human attention and toys to keep her happy. She is quite happy though, living free in the mountains.
otherpower 4 years ago
Thanx otherpower - we're located near York-UK. Pretty flat here, no mountains but enough sheep to go round! Sounds like Dixie has a pretty free and easy lifestyle and a great place to live!
Like what you are doing for the alternative energy movement - you could put a website link on your channel. We had a look-great site-very informative. Would love to convert to alternatives and are working towards it. Your site will help us as we are into DIY and recycling.

I love how she is so intense about her work! our border collie died at age 15 so i imagine she is getting pretty old..beautiful dog as well!
Shadowtear25 4 years ago
She is getting on and the signs of age are there, but although the flesh is weakening, the spirit shines through. I suspect she will want to herd until she drops and, saying that, I suppose that the best way to go is to go doing what you love most. The lyrics of the song reflect exactly how we feel about her and how priviledged we are to have shared part of her life and her company.
BorderCollieRescueUK 4 years ago
Ok Guys and Gals, we are well convinced. Will work on producing an alternative version with commentary for Border Collie Rescue in the near future.
Thanks for the feedback.

Enjoyed that. Maybe not as much as she seemed to. I think some narration would help us understand what she is doing.

BorderCollieRescueUK 4 years ago
Great dog and really fit for her age. I love the way you show these dogs working.
dogmanjohnsykes 4 years ago
She really is a game dog and we just love to watch her. She knows just when to apply pressure and when to hold back and she is so hard working and so loyal it brings tears to the eyes. As she is getting quite old we try and ease back on her and take another dog but she gets really disgusted and gives us the evil eye if she thinks she is being left out.
BorderCollieRescueUK 4 years ago
That was fun and interesting to watch! 8-)
DieselBodine 4 years ago
We enjoyed filming it! Someone said that we should add a commentary to explain what it is the dog is doing but I think that may make it all too serious and too much like a sheepdog training lesson - besides interfeering with the music!
Any feedback on that point from youtubers will be greatly appreciated.
BorderCollieRescueUK 4 years ago
I think an explanation would be justified and wonderful. There are lots of people that could benefit by learning what's going on with the animals in the video. 8-)
DieselBodine 4 years ago
I think a basic/general explanation of what going on or those who are not as familiar with herding as others (trained working corgis with Jerome Steward years ago, so I know a bit, but dont claim to be an expert).
:)
