Dave Lambert is such an under-rated lead guitarist. He is exceptional. He has come up with such memorable riffs, leads and is so consistent in the quality of his playing.
I agree with one poster, the album's studio version is far more grandiose -- and soooo good.
Saw the strawbs at Bedworth civic hall last year 2009, still excellent at what they do, Dave Cousins is such a friendly bloke spoke to us for agws after the gig well done Dave, top bloke.
The Strawbs ,UFO,Status Quo, Atomic Rooster,Ten Years After,Gong,Clearlight,(70's)Pink Floyd, and Hawkwind are some of the bands i listened to(thanks to my brother,he loved these bands). This was real music with great lyrics.I still love these bands.I seen the Strawbs twice. These days the music sucks,i can't think of one new band thats any good.
Saw them a bunch of times starting in 1973. I heard this when Lambert still had the pipes to sing like he did on the LP. Yeah, still have all my Strawbs vinyl through Deadlines.
My first ever prog band and still one of my favourites.
Down by the Sea is simply a stunning song with a magnificent riff (ANYONE would rip this off if they could!) , though the studio version is far more grandiose than any live version could be. However, Dave Lambert's final solo is brilliant.
Saw them on Feb 17th 1973 at Portsmouth as a wide-eyed 16 year old. This song was part of the finale and is imprinted on my memory forever. Thanks very much for posting this.
Saw them live in Belleville March 8th, 2009. This song is GREAT! live. One of my favs along with Out in the cold, round and round and Autumn. Hope to see them again!
It sounds very similar, but it's a very different riff actually when you look at it more closely, Metallica adds several more notes, and the overall sung over the song is completely different. I don't think Strawbs would win any lawsuits.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Metallica had heard the song before and thought the riff sounded cool and consciously or subconsciously was influenced by it. It is a very powerful riff.
metallica are a bunch of posers and copy not only this song, a lot of other NWOBHM songs, of unknown metal bands, thats why most people don't realize that
The first time was probably three or four years ago (I think that they had just got back to touring together) at the Winchester in Cleveland - and of course this time in Kent, Ohio; guess I'm fortunate since I see that John Hawken just retired from the band.
Man let me know when the Strawbs play the states. I need to see them. One of my favorite bands of all time.

First saw them in Norwich and this was thier intro with Gulls calling and fogging.
Fantastic and still listen to it 40 odd years on with headphone blasting.
Still good and touring. Dave likes his pint

What a powerful song. Still gives me goosebumps. Most rock musicians their age are lucky if they can still play "my dog has fleas."

This version of the intro is very pale compared to the studio version.

I don't know if any other Strawbs fans listen to Metallica, but their "Welcome Home (Sanitarium,)rips off the intro of this song.

I think Metallica have accepted that they picked up parts of Sanitarium from this one....I read it on Wikipedia actually....

Yeah, but even if it is just a little different it can be a 'stolen' riff. Just look at the Stairway and Taurus similarity.

Hi guys
Saw you in Harrogate 1973, I was in the upper circle, 4 rows from the back, 2 seats in from the centre, do you remember me?
I had a blue shirt on, if that helps?
At the end I shouted "more, more" several times, I bet you remember me now.
Great vid, thanks for the memories,
Best wishes

Yep - I did not see them live when they (and me) were younger, but I have seen them twice now - I've loved their music for a long time.
