I always loved this show - looking at it now [as I often do] it is a bit daft, but that doesn't matter. At all. And yet, I marvel at just how dark it could get [the smoking, decayed corpses in 'Death's Other Dominion', and especially in 'Dragons Domain' scared the shit out of my kid brother, and I hated Anton Zoref's charred body in 'Force Of Life'],but we HAD to watch it, as it always looked superb. Oh, and look in the 11th Doctor's TARDIS - he's got some of Moonbase Alpha's lights in it!
@brianartillery Right on... many of us liked this show. It had Martin Landau so right of the bat they could get you to believe something from the script. Overall it had a great feel to it no matter what the budget was.
@abbeykroeter Indeed. Martin Landau, Barbara Bain and Barry Morse could spout the most outrageous technobabble and you'd take it as gospel. It was a show that really fed the imagination; my brother and I each had a Dinky Toy Eagle model [still got one], and played with them incessantly. Add a box of Airfix astronauts - utter bliss in the summer holidays. Great show, and I still love it.
I always liked season 1 more than season 2. In season 2 , the theme song, and command centre, was changed. and the episodes took on a more light hearted ( funny ) feel to it. It just got silly with the second season
As much as i loved (and still do) this show...I have one question: How many Eagles did they have on that base? It seemed as though each episode had one getiing blown up or otherwise destroyed. Great show anyway, am enjoying it on DVD atm.
Barbara Bain was very cute, but Mr. Landau,s best sci-fi was back in the original "Outer Limits" from the early 60,s. I think he made 2 or 3 of them back in the old days.
this was the first season theme...although it was a little campy it also was one of the most believable around that time. the design of the eagle actually looks viable as a working cargo ship.
could truth be stranger than fiction, i have a feeling that there may be moon bases but they are black ops and kept secret from the public.
really trippy as fuck when yer look back the clothes,3 tv channels the uk shutingdown over the weekend, last orders fish and chips and strikes yeah they were the good old days
Catchy theme, but that's the only thing the show had going. The show itself is a painful gallery of the misconceptions '70s psychology had about human behavior.
@Mad826 yup just looked up Barbara Bain in wikipedia and it says "She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Actress in a Television Series for her performance in Mission: Impossible in 1968. She won three consecutive Emmys for Best Dramatic Actress for that series in 1967, 1968, and 1969.[1]
Her then husband, Martin Landau, also starred in the series, and her departure from the series in 1969 coincided with his. "
OMG... Every week when I was 10 or 11, I was so pissed I missed premiere episode... I was glued to the TV... I know the premise is highly unlikely, but I like the style, approach...
Loved this as a kid!! Oh my gosh the memories!! Hang on a minute where's the bird that could change into animals?? Swear it was this!! Pls tell me i'm not wrong!!?
This theme is from season one...Maya was introduced in the first episode of season two (although Catherine Schell herself appeared in a episode of s1 as the Servant of the Guardian of Piri).
i was 4 years old when space 1999 first aired on UK tv...my dad let me stay up to watch it...the theme alone gives me chills..there were some very scary episodes in the first season..i have of course re-discovered them all on DVD and i still love this show..and OMG Barbara Bain and Martin Landau are still acting in their 80s!!! way to go ....
@azzorroww Thats the one. :) Will tell you a bit of trivia, John Shrapnel was also in that episode, he married Deborah Kerr's younger daughter. bet you didn't know that.
Now, This was One Wild Theme with one Wild Set of Titles.
Why hasn't a Proper Big Screen Theatrical Overhaul and Remake been done of this TV Show. Come on Uncle Keith Shackleton. Get Gerry Anderson on the Phone !
Only Sir Patrick Stewart could fill the Shoes of The Late Barry Morse as Nobel Peace Prize Winning Scientist Dr. Victor Bergmann who gets taken for a ride when The Moon and Moonbase Alpha Get Blasted out of Earth's Orbit in a Freak Nuclear Accident & Explosion,Keith, I will call you
@Roadracer987654321 Why did they let Victor Bergmann go? - Did he die during the first season filming? He made the entire show worth watching. After he was gone, space 1999 went the same way as "lost in space". Staring with a heady sort of group oriented science fiction that was at least enjoyable, despite being so far-fetched. - They got the idea then to add thrills chills and spills and the entire thing became "kiddie fare".
"Barry Morse decided to leave the series after Season 1 had ended. An explanation of his absence was written into the first episode of Season 2, "The Metamorph", but never made it to the finished episode. Dialog was to indicate he had been in a faulty spacesuit. "
i always did wonder, why, when the moon got blown away from earths orbit, why they didnt all freeze to death as they were blown further from the sun? mabee they had good Double glazing and cavity wall insulation.
this is awesome even when played to day .....when this music came on those old tv sets years ago . you just new you where in for a power house of intertainment
I like the first few seconds of the theme, the drum rolling, followed by the dramatic loudness of the brass and strings. The bass guitar is really funny when listening to it now.

Hands down the coolest part of this show for me was always, always, the sets (including the ships). Of all the sci-fi worlds, this one still takes my breath away unlike any other. I am so pissed off that the real 1999 looked nothing like this.
I was a teenager when this show came out. At the time I thought the premise was pathetic. An explosion so big it caused the moon to travel the galaxy a la "Lost in Space" style?
I recall making fun of most episodes.
And yet I believe I watched most of the episodes .........
Thank you, poster, for a superior audio version of this theme. You must have peeled it off your stereo somehow. Naturally, I miss the images though. Odd to think that the brassy power of the first first several measures is every bit as powerful as the Straus that inspired it...
Thanks for the post. Awesome show. I wish SciFi channel would get rid of that b-rated crap they put on every Saturday night and put on some classic sci-fi like this. Even better... the redid Galactica, why not this?? Anything is better that the garbage they have on now.
Love The Very Spooky Out - tro Theme @ 1.07 min. I Think This Was The UK Version Of Star Trek, Although About 15years Late But Probably Made On The Same Budget! BRRRRRRRIIILIANT!!

Sometimes it's hard or impossible to find the parts, they're scattered all over youtube.
