The song is a song regarless of the lip syncs.. I like like the song. What's impressive is when someone said that's Grahmn Nash in the band of Crosby Stills and Nash. And another story was said with that.

interesting guitar switch by tony and graham with tony picking 12 string sound from a 6 string.
there are hollies videos with live sing but this is lip sync.
bad hosting but the football set is interesting in a bizzar way with the announced weights and the running through the goal posts. the women posing like mannequins is erortic and was featured on at least one other set on this show.
This is total bullshit. The Hollies are NOT singing live. This is a prerecorded track and they are LIP SYNCHING. If this is Shindig, most performances really were sung live but this isn't one of those performances. So get your shit straight.
I hate the banter on all the stupid American 60's TV shows...these hacks like Frankie Avalon knew they were out of a job the minute the first British band hit the scene...
@Wilthomer66 Since you're referring to the Beatles and the so-called "British Invasion", "hacks" like Frankie Avalon went on and had very long successful careers in music and TV and many are still going today. I looked at a 1968 music chart and the "invasion" had just about fizzled out with only the top groups remaining. And how long did the Beatles last? And this video shows that American "hacks" were being gracious and including the limeys along with the yanks.
@Wilthomer66 Frankie was never out of a job. What about all those UK banter hacks on those shows like Supersonic, TOTP and how about all those Bay City Rollers shows? And how about that state run BBC? In America, we had a huge variety of TV, not one government channel.
@Wilthomer66: Top Of The Pops had lip-synching beginning in 1964. Every British band would have been used to it by the time they went to America, you dipshit.
thanks to you and your friend for the film! and tell him if he has any other ones, well hell we've got nothing better to do!! and just to add, we lived in japan in the 60s and did not have a tv, so i never got to see these bands till now, so it's especially nice to be here!
@debiedog1 what were you doing in melbourne debie? and when you say "talented" what do you mean? 'cause we all know how talented they are, so when you say it, well we just wonder if there's a little more to the story that you're not telling us... :) come on, you can share...
Thanks, for this great post, ianabroad - a very rare clip, indeed! Most groups did not perform 'live' on most variety-show's during this period - sound issues, maybe? So, not sure why the many questions and criticism's with that. Where's Bern Calvert on bass at this time? Not familiar with the bassist shown here. Anyway .. great fun!!
Eric Haydock played bass on many of the early hits, and is considered to have been a better bassist than Calvert (check out his work on the song Put Yourself In My Place if you can find it). He left the band in 1966 after a dispute with the band's management over "creative accounting".
That was a BRILLIANT intro! The Hollies were always billed as coming from Manchester, but now we know the truth, they're from Blackpool, Nelson, Stockport, Burnley & Salford, all in Lancashire!

The Hollie,s?? nice early clip here thankyou,, Brilliant now as back then thats 4 sure, i love them, and to think of the so called music they are making and dumping on us today ?? what a JOKE !!!!!!!
I actually watched this when it aired live on TV. Why isn't TV like this today? Oh wait...I don't want to see hip hop and rap stars. Forget I asked that question.
This is early 1966. And yet I'm surprised they're singing a song that is already about 2 years old. The Hollies had released an abundance of material in 1965 and 1966 with some great songs that they could have performed...
In retrospect, Hullabaloo was really really corny in its presentation...
@sapphiretaurus You just might be right about that. My evidence was based on the George Harrison pic (with hat) behind Frankie, which first appeared publicly in December of '65.
After all of these years, this song still kicks my ass. Great pantomime and manniken, Twilight Zone effects.!!! I've just now learned the names of the band ex luding Graham Nash of course.Rock on regardless.
Where do the truckers go themselves? Hell! in this world of serial killers, a few truckers, often picking up prostitutes I just don't want to think about it. Joyous songs now just a little scary or my hyperbole is ..
Tony Hicks is an incredible guitar player. I agree that he was way under rated. Looking at this video, he plays effortlessly. His right hand picking is amazing.
This isn't a live performance, no instrument chords for one and Tony Hicks played the lead part on a 12 string not on a 6 string, The never did these old TV shows with live performances, too risky if something didn't work right. Tony Hicks was and still is a top notch guitar player.
@ccavaleri If they were going to mime it correctly, Tony should have had the 12-string guitar and Graham the 6-string. Also, I bet the British Hollies were wondering what is it with the Goalposts (which, in the UK, would be for rugby), the women in striped shirts and white pants (referees), and the helmets with faceguards (most were blanked out, but the Minnesota Vikings' helmet on a player were intact), unusual jerseys or shirts (ex. Dallas Cowboys stars on shoulders jerseys) and padded pants.
Great performance, thanks for posting. Has anyone noticed that there were more than a few performance done back during this period where the female models were just standing there like mannikens? Remniscent of a Twilight Zone episode!
@staypress You're right. In those days the US TV producers expected rock bands to mime and mouthe their songs, while they played the recorded versions. They thought the fans would be disappointed if the group didn't sound just like their record! When the British bands found they were expected to do that, they were disgusted, but they had to play the game.
One wonders what Frankie Avalon was thinking as he was reciting this intro. He was one of the American pop stars from the early 60s who were shoved to the curb by the British Invasion. He would have had no reason to love these guys.
One can't help but notice that unintentionally condescending intro to The Hollies performacne. Obviously it was all an attempt to incorporate some humor into what must've been the days leading up to Super Bowl 1. Big Hollies fan here.
You can tell that this is long ago because these guys weigh in at 133 lbs, 140 lbs, 151 lbs, 147 lbs and 142 lbs. ! Nowadays a third of everyone would be clinically obese and the rest at least 20 lbs overweight. Ah, progress!
I actually remember seeing this on TV as it happened back in the 60's... Forty something years later I STILL crank this one up! Probably my all-time favorite Hollies song, without a doubt. It's a real shame though that Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliot couldn't make the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Awards. As much as it was great to see Allan, Graham and the guys, it would have been absolutely unreal to see all of them together performing...
The Hollies are being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame TONIGHT in the Year 2010. I'm glad I listened to their music 40 years ago and I hope someone will kindly PLEASE put a You Tube of the R&R Hall of Fame induction of OUR HOLLIES. They are STILL ADORABLE after all these years!! The HOLLIES FOREVER!!!!
I should also add that Nash was increasingly disillusioned with the UK rock scene, which he found competitive and cut-throat. When he hung out with Crosby, Stills, Mama Cass (with whom he had an affair) and others in LA, he found a more cooperative and positive vibe among the musicians. As well, his marriage to Rose Eccles was falling apart, and he just needed a whole change of scenery and attitude. He got it when he moved to the States and joined CSN.
1) he was a pot smoker while the others were drinkers, and their sensibilities clashed;
2) the band rejected several of his songs, including Marrakesh Express;
3) he was carrying most of the song writing load (8 out of 12 on his last album with them), but the Clarke-Hicks-Nash credit still prevailed, which meant royalties went to people who didn't earn them;
4) the Dylan covers album. Nash hated the tacky arrangements.
Check birth dates of 60's UK rockers - RIngo 1940, Nash/Clarke '42, Jagger/Richards '43, Hicks '45, Ronnie Wood '47 etc. Born during or just after World War II. Pregnant moms & tots didn't have enough to eat in England. Food was rationed until 1954! For many, add poverty & rationing = little people. Pete Townshend is 6 feet, Lennon was 5'11, and came from a pretty comfortable home. They must have towered over a lot of their musical pals (In particular the Small Faces!)
Great song, but as others have pointed out,it is lip synced. But even more curious - Nash is playing the Vox 12 string which Hicks usually plays, and uses for the intro riff, although here he is pretending to play it on a 335
@makahaLouie yah awsome, and i just found out over on long cool woman that clark took over on rithem guitar and lead vocals for that song. .... then he left the band. 1972.
oh this is so cool, Mr. Nash was right on when he said he left because he couldn`t understand why they would want to do Mr. Dylan`s jones when they wrote better songs themselves. Good thing big mama hooked him up with 2 other like minded yanks. thanks for this post.
Their music just made me feel good. Great guitar work, harmony and good, clean fun to watch and hear them! Hullabaloo could have dumped the girls and football cutouts, just blocks my view of the guys! Thanks for posting it! I'll take them anyway I can! :-)
@ebf1957 Indeed. You have to realize that the mainstream still didn't quite "get" rock and roll at this time. As a form of music it was still very young and in essence dismissed as music for kids. This is an example of unhip media trying to look hip. The result is, typically, merely bizarre.
According to wikipidia he left to join another group-Crosby, Stills, and Nash. :) You may know them from the Woodstock film-and especially their cover of Joni Mitchell's famous song "Woodstock" amongst other gems. :)
Thanks for the effort, I'm well versed in Crosby, Stills and Nash(later also with Neil Young) but I was wondering if perhaps there was some heat with some members of the Hollies or he didn't like the direction the band was going in. But hey, a lot artists jumped ship in those days :)
@GuanRy Nash DEFINITELY was stifled by the more conservative members of the Hollies who did not like his songwriting. It got to the point where Graham began to doubt himself, until David Crosby reassured him that his stuff was a breath of fresh air and he should keep on writing.
I suspect that Tony Hicks in particular thought Graham's subject matter and innovations were too far out to fit into the Hollies' formula for pop music success.
Wally, Wally...where did you turn up The Hollies? Never heard them before, but great harmony. Did Ricky know about these guys? Five happy stars. Regards, John
It is weird seeing Nash without any kind of facial hair.lol. However, on a more serious note it probably was on this visit to America where Nash first met the two people who would have the biggest impact on his career; David Crosby and Joni Mitchell.
Seems to me that Tony Hicks was under rated with this guitar playing. We know many others by name , but I'll bet if you ask 100 people who is Tony Hicks , not many would know ,if any.. He could play with the best of them ! ~
This clip is from the show Hullabaloo, which was the most confused of the 60s rock shows. It couldn't decide if it was aiming for a teens and 20s rock audience or an older over-30 audience. That's why you hear a big band playing cheesy football music behind Avalon, and why Avalon says "Win this one for Ringo" - a reference to "Win one for the Gipper" from the film Knute Rockne All-American (starring Ronald Reagan), which probably meant little to the Hollies and their fans.
I really bum out when I search youtube for LIVE in studio television show performances from old bands I like,(like The Hollies), get all excited because I find the exact song that I'm looking for(Look Through Any Window) the person titles the video: LIVE(Rare)--And then the video is what this is. The band faking it to a recording. That is not LIVE my friend.Question:Is that because you are trying to fool people, or because you really don't know the difference? Cool vid, just a mis-leading title.
Newhotman: I think the reference to "winning one for Ringo" was the program's attempt at humor; mixing thier Super Bowl theme with pop music. You've heard; "win one for the Gipper"?
Not live but the best version of this song. This would have to be in late 1965 as Bernie Calvert did not join until that time or early 1966. I still can't figure out what Ringo had to do with them being there.
why pick it to pieces a great song just be thankful you can hear it here

Check birth dates of 60's UK rockers - RIngo 1940, Nash/Clarke '42, Jagger/Richards '43, Hicks '45, Ronnie Wood '47 etc. Born during or just after World War II. Pregnant moms & tots didn't have enough to eat in England. Food was rationed until 1954! For many, add poverty & rationing = little people. Pete Townshend is 6 feet, Lennon was 5'11, and came from a pretty comfortable home. They must have towered over a lot of their musical pals (In particular the Small Faces!)

@rocktenniscat huh??? Rubbish!!!!!

What is rubbish? Not clear buckleworts.
rocktenniscat 1 year ago
@rocktenniscat Nash is 5' 11'' and has always been on the slim side. He can still bounce around like a kid at 68 years of age.

LOVE that 12-string Vox guitar!
normvb 2 years ago
Was this in"66?
jimbowie09 2 years ago
Great song, but as others have pointed out,it is lip synced. But even more curious - Nash is playing the Vox 12 string which Hicks usually plays, and uses for the intro riff, although here he is pretending to play it on a 335

The Hollies music was very simple and clear.. Nice to listen to that harmony, 12 string chiming and Mr Hicks with his simple but precise licks..
Who can forget mr Clarke's distinct voice also! Good stuff.. deeply missed today! Long live Rockn' 60's

@makahaLouie yah awsome, and i just found out over on long cool woman that clark took over on rithem guitar and lead vocals for that song. .... then he left the band. 1972.

Misleading title here son. This is NOT live.
It's lip synched as were most TV appearences in those days.
dunskie 2 years ago
oh this is so cool, Mr. Nash was right on when he said he left because he couldn`t understand why they would want to do Mr. Dylan`s jones when they wrote better songs themselves. Good thing big mama hooked him up with 2 other like minded yanks. thanks for this post.

I got chills watching this--from Hullabaloo
1966 or 67 ..it was winter time, that I do remember!!!
sonney0409 2 years ago
Their music just made me feel good. Great guitar work, harmony and good, clean fun to watch and hear them! Hullabaloo could have dumped the girls and football cutouts, just blocks my view of the guys! Thanks for posting it! I'll take them anyway I can! :-)
devilwoman52 2 years ago 10
@devilwoman52
It is hokey. But that's what variety shows did. What connection to football and that song is a mystery to me.
ebf1957 1 year ago
@ebf1957 Indeed. You have to realize that the mainstream still didn't quite "get" rock and roll at this time. As a form of music it was still very young and in essence dismissed as music for kids. This is an example of unhip media trying to look hip. The result is, typically, merely bizarre.

Great band of the Sixties, The Hollies!!!!! Great sound and great performance.
Ricciariello 8 months ago
Judging by what's on the wall behind Frankie, this had to be from "Hullabaloo" mid to late 1965 .

Anyone know why Graham left?
GuanRy 2 years ago
According to wikipidia he left to join another group-Crosby, Stills, and Nash. :) You may know them from the Woodstock film-and especially their cover of Joni Mitchell's famous song "Woodstock" amongst other gems. :)
faeryquene 2 years ago
Thanks for the effort, I'm well versed in Crosby, Stills and Nash(later also with Neil Young) but I was wondering if perhaps there was some heat with some members of the Hollies or he didn't like the direction the band was going in. But hey, a lot artists jumped ship in those days :)
GuanRy 2 years ago 2
No heat with the band, but you're right about the direction part.
citybeat60 2 years ago
@GuanRy Nash DEFINITELY was stifled by the more conservative members of the Hollies who did not like his songwriting. It got to the point where Graham began to doubt himself, until David Crosby reassured him that his stuff was a breath of fresh air and he should keep on writing.
I suspect that Tony Hicks in particular thought Graham's subject matter and innovations were too far out to fit into the Hollies' formula for pop music success.
NewHopeNashFan 1 year ago
My favorite Hollies song, but man is that a squirrelly introduction they had to go through.
tinman3012 2 years ago 4
I think that was the norm back then-all those hosts seemed to be real hams, and the 'skits' rather silly.

one third of CSN, Graham Nash...most all groups in this era became another band!

I Love this video i love The Holliies and i love this song =)
solzinha82 2 years ago 2
This clip is from the show Hullabaloo, which was the most confused of the 60s rock shows. It couldn't decide if it was aiming for a teens and 20s rock audience or an older over-30 audience. That's why you hear a big band playing cheesy football music behind Avalon, and why Avalon says "Win this one for Ringo" - a reference to "Win one for the Gipper" from the film Knute Rockne All-American (starring Ronald Reagan), which probably meant little to the Hollies and their fans.
russallert 2 years ago
The intro is one of the most absurd I've ever seen.

Cool vid, just a mis-leading title.
dunskie 2 years ago
Newhotman: I think the reference to "winning one for Ringo" was the program's attempt at humor; mixing thier Super Bowl theme with pop music. You've heard; "win one for the Gipper"?
LarryRickenbacker 2 years ago
Not live but the best version of this song. This would have to be in late 1965 as Bernie Calvert did not join until that time or early 1966. I still can't figure out what Ringo had to do with them being there.

Its not live its lip syncd - big difference!
Also the weights of these guys is unbelievable, like from 134 to 151??? They'd be like midgets or anorexics in today's world!
OlymPigs2010 2 years ago
Might be the only time where you see a band introduced with both thier names and thier weight as well.
I don't ever recall such a thing happening at any of the metal concerts I used to go to.
