And my Dad used to be a truck driver but he was blind in one eye so he couldn't be a long hual trucker. I been wanting to be a trucker since I was like 4. That's the best way to see america is by driving on her roads.

Great video, Steve. It seems thoughtfully made and you share a lot of insight.
I'm thinking of getting into trucking myself. I built houses for 12 years and recently got laid off from being a construction supervisor 2 months ago.
I'm finding that construction jobs are hard to come by right now. I'm checking out some different companies and schools to go to.
Any advice for a potential rookie checking things out?
I really enjoyed watching this video, thank you for putting it up. I have a couple questions to ask and if ya have time i would really like to know your thoughts. I and in the process of getting my CDL and i havent gone to any school for trucking. I have been looking on the web for driving jobs but almost all the companies want a min of one year exp. In your opinion what whould be the best way to get that when companies do not want to hire a greenhorn.
@bigz8808 My company takes on new drivers. We also have the best trainers in the industry. I was a teacher for a long time. give them a call. 800 549 9169 tell them truckersteve sent ya!
I must say Steve.. I feel the same as you when you were describing trucking and the things you get to see doing this job. Liked the video, drive safe buddy.
love it, love it, love it, really takes me back and reminds me of home, thank you for letting the world see some of the beuty you are blessed to see out on the road Steve, i was having a rough day today 'till i watched this video, made me really relax and think of the scenery i used to see everyday back home in Washington State. well, i'll be driving for May in a couple months hopefully, hope to see you out there one day, drive safe brother, enjoy life out on the road, i know i will.
@Whitelinefilms thanks for the reply Steve, now do me a favor and have yourself a great day tomorrow alright brother? Keep those wheels rollin, i'll see you out there one day, i'll buy you lunch. take care!
I am going to take a 6 week intensive training school in south Texas. The cost is over $3,000. I know I want to drive but I am scared about the jobs, and that is why I want to take schooling, and not just the test. I have so much respect for you, and think you are a bad ass. Tell me what you think? Is it worth the money? Get back to me.
@Whitelinefilms Doing good...we've all been miss'n you to. Get your ass back behind of that camera and make us a vid!! And get back to the blindspot...dont make me get Eskimo to kick your butt!!
wow is all i have to say i use to think that trucking is only about sitting driving deating and sleeping but wow im in high school right know and im going to be a trucker i hope to see you on the road in the future your a great insperation
this is one of my faverourite video some people would think it had no action but with the tunes playing in the background its like im there with you only another trucker could feel the sentiment behind it if your not a trucker and you get steves point truckin could be for you .beutifull country steve reminds me of parts of greatbritain i love and havent visited in a while..keep the faith bro.
Wow to come back and watch older videos is so cool. To see how much we have all changed in our skill level of video making. This one is still very cool. Loved the secenery and the Hall and Oates just gets me!! Awesome brother!
That ain't no joking Todd! We all have come so far a lot of times I still can't believe I made some of the stuff I did. I'm careful not to watch some of it or I would take it down (LOL)
Your vids are great. I'm a new driver about to start for a company in Ontario. I've never been in southern US, but I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I'll see you otr. Keep up the great work.
I love your video's. You are right, it is what you make of it. That goes for trucking as well as life. I am glad to see you enjoying your work. You get to see so much of this beautiful country. I think I'd like to try that. Going coast to coast, no two days alike. I am going TO a CDL school soon. I wasn't sure if I should try to get a Class A or Class B. I think the class A gives me much more opportunities. Thanks for your great video's and your great attitude towards trucking.
Hi Steve, I am going to CDL school in Dec and am lookin at MTC. It seems that your happy, and your attitude is great! By the way, is that a Fender sticker in your drivers side window? Thanks for the inspiring videos!
Watched most of your videos I lost almost everything thru my divorce and look at 4 walls and feel like i need to get up and go so I leave on Nov 15 for my CDL school and am leaving everything encluding the full time job I have to drive the country ( as long as I pass and that should be not an issue ) Dont have anyting else to loose. I'll bet that other guys wish they could do the same, a chance of a life time.
Good luck to you my friend, it is truly a great way of life. I had a short haul job home frequently went through a divorce myself. I hit the open road again and have not looked back.

Free advise!Take every inch you got since your getting the feel of the vehicle and its parameters even if it makes you look silly.Remember there is no room for error.Every accident is avoidable.Dont hit anything, starting with curbs.Dont avoid city driving but do pretrip homework.Know addresses, phone#`s directions get a map collection if you dont have a lap top for google.Learning these cities gives you freedom to enjoy the profession. You cant enjoy it if your stressed out.Remember who Loves you
this video really hits home...your 100% right when u say its what you make of it...its not a way to make money...its a way of life...and im glad theres still drivers out there that still care...hope to catch ya on the flip side...

thanks steve cant wait to get out there but im going to miss my home and girlfriend very very much but its videos like this that bring it into perspective especally when you said "look at this did you get to look at this" people are stuck in a office all day looking at the wall. but i hope me and my girlfriend can make it through.
Hi Steve, what type of equipment do you use? What worked and what didn't? Sound quality is great. (I have turned this video on and just let it run while I do housework.....and the audio is awesome. Please let me know the name of the recording equipment. THanks. (I wll be watching more videos tonight).
no we do not have any kids and she works full time but she is planing to take time off to come with me every once and a while. i would like to do regional work i heard when you do regional runs you are home every weekend or so is this true? long hauls your on the road for weeks at a time? and your local your home everynight.
Listen to Steve, it will be tough... this is a bad time to go into debt to become a trucker; likely you won't climb back out, go see KW19791's videos, and Steve's and my responses. Trucking can be rewarding, like Steve says, it's what you make it; however right now is bad timing, and the industry is completely FUBAR, it goes all the way against truckers in every way. If you want Sugar Coating, go listen to the recruitersm and look at shiny trucks on their websites, the big $ promises; all lies!
Dam brother...pulling out the oldies...Hall and Oates...how is it I keep finding videos of your I have not seen yet!! Great vid bro. You are really getting me in the frame of mind to head back out there again. The winter job running OTR fell through but I know I can get on with numerous compainies full time...ya never know! Another 5 star performace..even if it was just the song...dude the memories!!
I pulled into our drop yard on Christmas eve, too late to get a rental car, and my dispatcher would not authorize me to bob tail 50 miles so I could be with family for Christmas day. I won't mention the Co. but I asked MAY I drive home? and she said no you MAY not.
Yes. To hell with policy. I bust my ass for this company 24/7 for months at a time to live what could very well be discribed as endentured survirude, and then be denied the oportunity to be with family at Christmas for what would be 5 to 10 gallons of diesel fuel is really a reflection of what the company feels about their drivers. Bah Humbug !
"this company"? So the entire company said "your not going home" I don't think so.. One person told you that, not the company. Had you asked someone different the out come may have been different.
Ones success at a company is often attributed to how they carry them self as well as their understand of the chain of command...
I am so sick of truckers who wine and cry about how their company stinks or there dispatcher is a A-hole, when more then likely the problem is with them. (the person complaining) I have never had your problem but Then again I understand their side as well. I also carry myself different.
I work 24/7, never late for a load, have only asked for "home time" once in four months and never complain about back to back to back 200 mile loads. I always runs legal and do everything I can to have as many hours avbailable to drive. What do you do that is so different that makes you so better?
Well for one I don't wine and complain about things, coming on the internet to complain to me or anyone else never solved a problem. The reason why most companies have such high turn over is that people like you take it personal and don't know how to fix the problem or who to talk to rather.
Is this company the first one you ever worked for or is it one in a long list of companies. Because it has to be one or the other with your type.
Newbies who see this video will think we drive through beautiful scenery all the time. Nice film, but where's the reality here? It's great when we run in the wilderness, but just how often does the average driver get to? Not very often! Most of us have to drive through polluted cities & sit in traffic jams every day. Half the time we're driving at night & see nothing! Not to mention all the bad weather driving! The reality for most of the time - Driving can be extremely boring & frustrating too.
Agreed, On my talk radio show I let new drivers know about the 90/10 rule. 90 % is boring 10 % is interesting.
But I show even balance in my videos.. If anything I show more of the bad then the good. Watch my films "drivers sacrifice" or "Going home" or "trucking is not what it use to be" I speak the truth in my videos driver.
What kind of a truck do you drive? Have you ever traveled through Wyoming? If you drive for swift what kind of home time do you get? I drive truck already but want to find an over the road job when I turn 21 and can cross state borders.
not actually a comment on this video, just wanted ta stop by and say hey..an have a safe trip brah.. i aint been home in a while myself an miss the family also but 25 + yars later im still gettin it done..have a safe one bud...
Brilliant, just brilliant, Keep up the good work. I would love to try trucking across the USA. Two problems though, I am from the UK and I cant drive big trucks! lol!!
I might try it though in the UK and Europe once this economic downturn is over.
Yo man, I like your vids! What advice would you give someone who is turning 21 in December of 08. Mainly cause I'm interested in becoming and OTR driver and I don't want to wait. Should I go to trucking school or wait till I am 21 and get pre-hired with a company?
Come on out, I will save a seat for you! It is nice to wake up every morning open the curtains and see mother earth in front of me. Instead of have to look at my bosses nose hair grow longer and longer every day! LOL
Man oh man, excellent video! I hope you do more like this. After 25 years of being stuck in a cubicle, always dealing with layoffs and A-holes, I am ready!
I was thinking about a career in trucking, Would it be the job for me, i love travel and trucks!, my uncle was a trucker, went out with him on a few runs, enjoyed alot.
would that suggest truck driving is the job for me?
Heavy- Yeah i can be a bit of a clown at times. But i am just being silly. In videos like this i put the real me in em. Try checking out Drivers Sacrifice or going home. CLASSIC me video. Take care my brother.
hey steve. i watched thousands of trucking videos, but i have never come across a video like this. the last four mins was so inspiring and i was totally engrossed in your commentary that i forget that i was watchin your videos in my office computer and my bald headed boss trying to make me bald.. i recently got my CDL but cant get a job. i am dying to drive one. please let me know if anybody like you wants a team driver or a co thats willing to hire. i hope to hear from you.
awsome ride steve, i soon hope to be driving. worked in a factory for 23 years and seen the video and the road started calling.told my boss to kiss my ass,so now going to cdl school take care man
hey steve, you keep inspiring your public to see the unseen. trucking as you said is really what you make it. the risks are great but the rewards are greater by seeing your country though your eyes. you always pull through to give it your all and the view is spectacular. keep truckin
Yeah that bothers me a bit also!!! LOL, this was before i was 100% copyright free! I did make my own music back then but didn't think it would enhance my video any. You live and learn.
Thanks for the inspiration my friend. I just turned 50 and retired out of the carpenters union here in Las Vegas. Now I am looking to do something for the rest of my life so I am getting ready to go to trucking school to get my CDL and go OTR.Your videos fire me up, thanks
Steve, I just got to say I love your videos and the effort you put into making them. Growing up and still today I have always had a fascination with trucks. This video just kinda took the words out of my mouth and put things into reality, and answered a few questions I have always had. Thank you.
Hey buddy have you ever been through a little town called Hebo Oregon it to is soooo beautiful thank you for the view and Hall and Oats was one of my favorite 70 bands and man i really would love to go on a run with you cause all i got to look at today was a 1,782.00 hospital bill Keep Safe Teri.
It is funny that you say that. I never paid much attention to that but i live not to far from Flagstaff,AZ (my home). Maybe this is why i like this stretch of OR.
Thank you! I will have to look up the title of the second song but the first one is one on one by Darrel Hall and John Oats second song is be Celine Dion!
Hey Steve! Spotted your videos when I was looking for some good travel videos of Oregon. Thanks for making your videos! I met a friend who was a trucker in 2000 & we drove crosscountry for 2 mons. It was a trip of a lifetime. There were dangers & there were tough times, but overall the road was very relaxing & gave me some much needed time to get my head straight. Truckers sometimes get a bad rap, but you help prove that many are just normal people making a living doing what they enjoy. Be safe!
Thank you very much, Hearing your comments is what keeps me going. I really like sharing the road with everyone and i am glad you enjoyed it. Take care and be safe.
Nice! My company is named whiteline out of Plymouth, Mi. Thanks for not being a bitter azz like many of us. Your hobby here is fun to keep up on. Be safe brother! keep on keepin on! Joker, Champaign, Il.
Awsome Vid Steve everything you said in that vid is the samething ive been saying to my wife and family, it dosent get any better then that.Being out on the open road, even though my open road is only a day cab, But being home everynight is a bonus,But just being out on the road makes me feel better i enjoy the outdoors and the canadian country side.
Keep it up brother hope to talk to you soon, Safe Travels
I know what you mean. You don't have to travel far or be gone over night to feel at peace with the highway. It is one of the those things you have to feel to really appreciate. Thanks for watching brother.
Great vid man..my dad was over the road when i was a kid...i always loved it...now im a lil older (23) i wanna get into it...but i find myself getting tired over long distance drives...any ideas? what helps you stay awake?
Over the road aint for everybody but you can get a local job where you are home everyday or every other day,but you ill sthave to get rest if you get tired edstart back out.I love it man but when I start it just took a while getting use to being away from home,my son, etc. but if its for you build up a love for it.
Yeah nice vid.But someday the road will lose its appeal.
As long as you've been in it im supprised you arent local in pheonix or where ever you live.
1st song was good 2nd was gay but it was good.
Done 8 years OTR myself. There is more to life than the road dude.Hopefuly your kids wont hate you for not being home as much when they grow up.either way good luck, enjoy the pirate life on the road.Nice video.
I have had several position that got me home a lot but all good things come to a end. So i hoped up on the highway to ride another day. I am with my kids as often as can be. I won't always be rolling out here, it just happens to be right now.
Wow, awesome video. You and seansuth have the best trucking videos. Most of the time I just watch his videos because he's from the same part of Canada as me and I'm familiar with the scenery, but your videos are cool. You got comedy and drama. Keep it going.
Thank you, Sean is a great friend of mine, And I love to watch his videos too. I just try to keep it real. Trucking is so many feeling, I make videos about how I feel at the moment. I can not make a random video I need to be evoked to do it.
Also check out Texolot if you haven't already is videos are really good too.
I'm gearing up to get my CDL and start my life as a trucker. Great videos, and great advice. How long have you been on the road?

I love your video's. You are right, it is what you make of it. That goes for trucking as well as life. I am glad to see you enjoying your work. You get to see so much of this beautiful country. I think I'd like to try that. Going coast to coast, no two days alike. I am going TO a CDL school soon. I wasn't sure if I should try to get a Class A or Class B. I think the class A gives me much more opportunities. Thanks for your great video's and your great attitude towards trucking.

I'll bet that other guys wish they could do the same, a chance of a life time.

You cant enjoy it if your stressed out.Remember who Loves you

no we do not have any kids and she works full time but she is planing to take time off to come with me every once and a while. i would like to do regional work i heard when you do regional runs you are home every weekend or so is this true? long hauls your on the road for weeks at a time? and your local your home everynight.
DomTrucker 3 years ago
Listen to Steve, it will be tough... this is a bad time to go into debt to become a trucker; likely you won't climb back out, go see KW19791's videos, and Steve's and my responses. Trucking can be rewarding, like Steve says, it's what you make it; however right now is bad timing, and the industry is completely FUBAR, it goes all the way against truckers in every way. If you want Sugar Coating, go listen to the recruitersm and look at shiny trucks on their websites, the big $ promises; all lies!

I pulled into our drop yard on Christmas eve, too late to get a rental car, and my dispatcher would not authorize me to bob tail 50 miles so I could be with family for Christmas day. I won't mention the Co. but I asked MAY I drive home? and she said no you MAY not.
geeselouise 3 years ago
Policy is policy however what MAY be asked sometimes MAY not need to be. DIG?
Whitelinefilms 3 years ago
Bah Humbug !
geeselouise 3 years ago
"this company"? So the entire company said "your not going home" I don't think so.. One person told you that, not the company. Had you asked someone different the out come may have been different.
Ones success at a company is often attributed to how they carry them self as well as their understand of the chain of command...
Who did you talk to after your dispatcher?
Whitelinefilms 3 years ago
I am so sick of truckers who wine and cry about how their company stinks or there dispatcher is a A-hole, when more then likely the problem is with them. (the person complaining) I have never had your problem but Then again I understand their side as well. I also carry myself different.
Whitelinefilms 3 years ago
I work 24/7, never late for a load, have only asked for "home time" once in four months and never complain about back to back to back 200 mile loads. I always runs legal and do everything I can to have as many hours avbailable to drive. What do you do that is so different that makes you so better?
geeselouise 3 years ago
Well for one I don't wine and complain about things, coming on the internet to complain to me or anyone else never solved a problem. The reason why most companies have such high turn over is that people like you take it personal and don't know how to fix the problem or who to talk to rather.
Is this company the first one you ever worked for or is it one in a long list of companies. Because it has to be one or the other with your type.
P.S nothing is ever perfect in trucking!
Whitelinefilms 3 years ago
It was Christmas eve. Everyone else at the company had gone home to be with family.
geeselouise 3 years ago
In that case why didn't you just do the same? No one would have been there to know any different right? LOL
Whitelinefilms 3 years ago
Newbies who see this video will think we drive through beautiful scenery all the time. Nice film, but where's the reality here? It's great when we run in the wilderness, but just how often does the average driver get to? Not very often! Most of us have to drive through polluted cities & sit in traffic jams every day. Half the time we're driving at night & see nothing! Not to mention all the bad weather driving! The reality for most of the time - Driving can be extremely boring & frustrating too.
pegasus431 3 years ago
Agreed, On my talk radio show I let new drivers know about the 90/10 rule. 90 % is boring 10 % is interesting.
But I show even balance in my videos.. If anything I show more of the bad then the good. Watch my films "drivers sacrifice" or "Going home" or "trucking is not what it use to be" I speak the truth in my videos driver.
Have a great day brother.

Be safe!
